19-year-old Dimitris Kyrsanidis, a professional parkour athlete from Thessaloniki, Greece, was the winner of the fourth “Red Bull Art of Motion” held in the Greek island of Santorini on October 4. Kyrsanidis impressed both audience and judges with his climbs and bold leaps, winning the title. The picturesque island of Santorini, with its volcanic rocks, deep blue sea and white houses, hosted the “Red Bull Art of Motion” for the fourth consecutive year. Eighteen athletes competed in the parkour competition held in the world’s best natural racetrack. A total of 55 freerunners from across the world came to Santorini to compete in the preliminary phase held the previous days, in a stunning scenery, in front of the island’s caldera. Having the Cycladic island’s architecture as a backdrop, the athletes offered a spectacular show to the audience. “Red Bull Art of Motion” was launched in Vienna in 2007 and is considered the leading freerunning event with more than 10 competitions in different countries during the last few years. In 2011, Santorini was chosen as the top destination for freerunning and since then the competition takes place in Firostefani, with Latvian Pavel Petkuns coming first for two consecutive years. The athletes’ main objective is to cover the distance from the starting to the ending point, avoiding obstacles in the most efficient way possible.
