Empire State Manufacturing index plunges more than expectedd
[Screen Shot 2016 05 16 at 8.34.54 AM copy]New York Fed Manufacturing activity in New York state is slowing down more than expected. The general business conditions index for May came in at -9.02 after spiking to a 15-month high of 9.56 in April. Economists had expected it at 6.50, according to Bloomberg. The latest report showed that new orders and shipments declined and their indexes fell below zero. The capital expenditures index fell to its lowest level in over two years. Employment was little changed, while the work week declined. After reporting optimism in April, business owners became less bullish about business conditions out to six months. This chart shows the age when most people feel the least happy
People's levels of happiness vary at different points in their life. In a recent note to clients, a Bank of America Merrill Lynch team led by Beijia Ma shared a chart using data from Nielsen, which shows people's self-reported well-being at various ages. The most striking thing from the chart is that people report the lowest levels of well-being in their early 50s. Notably, this is the age that most people are starting to seriously think about their retirement plans, might be figuring how to pay for their kid's college tuition, and even thinking about taking care of their aging parents. However, also interestingly, people report increasing levels of well-being after their early 50s. And, according to this chart, people report the highest levels of well-being in their 80s. Of course, patterns like this can change over time: 30 years from now, today's 50 year olds could end up less happy than today's 80 year old, and today's 20 year olds more happy than today's 50 year olds. But at least for right now, middle age appears to be the low point for self-reported well-being. Here's what the BAML team had to say about well-being and aging: According to Nielsen, there is “scientific evidence that people get happier as they get older. While there are differing theories as to why this is, most agree that it is an acceptance of aging that promotes contentedness. Logically, this acceptance is more apt to happen with older people.” In OECD countries, more than half of 65+ cohort report to be in good health, which means that not only do the elderly have more free time, but they would be equipped to take advantage of it. In any case, check out the full chart below. [Screen Shot 2016 05 16 at 8.15.58 AM]BAML NOW WATCH: FORMER GREEK FINANCE MINISTER: The single largest threat to the global economy

Phones – crucial to survival for refugees on the perilous route to Europe
For refugees trying to reach Europe, a mobile phone is not a luxury. It is as important as the clothes on their back or even the boat they climb in to cross the Mediterranean. Phone calls and messages are just a part of it – mobile apps, websites, social media, navigation tools and translation services, camera and audio recording all combine to make up a digital infrastructure that has become integral to any journey to Europe. It is through phones that refugees learn about routes and the cost of transport. It’s how they find out which borders are open and which are closed. Even before they make it that far, their phone might have saved their life by informing them about the weather conditions on a sea crossing. The general view is that they have three basic needs: a smartphone, food and water – in that order. We interviewed refugees travelling to Europe between October 2015 and April 2016. One refugee told us how his wife was gravely ill at the Macedonian border and that he was only able to tell the border police that she needed urgent and very specialist attention – medical care that ultimately saved her life – thanks to a translation app on his phone. Another told us that if he had not had a mobile phone he would not have been able to call the coastguards to inform them that their boat was capsizing. He said 50 lives were saved as a result of that call. ON THE MOVE Access to digital resources plays a crucial role in planning the different legs of the journey and offers a small level of control at a time when refugees feel their lives are full of danger. One group of Syrians, for example, told us that when they were passing through Serbia, trying to reach the Hungarian border by car, the GPS device prevented them being cheated by dishonest smugglers. They could check that they were on the right road and were able to stop the smuggler in the driving seat when they realised he was taking them in the wrong direction. When they arrive in Europe, refugees also need to know how to find legal representation, make an asylum claim as well as find food and shelter. Their phone is the only way to do it. POCKET-SIZED THREAT Understandably fears about security and privacy are intense – particularly since there are very few legal options left for refugees trying to come to Europe. Governments are tightening and closing their borders so crossings often have to be made illegally, using fake passports. The fear of being monitored forces refugees to go underground digitally. They use avatars, fake identities and closed Facebook groups to exchange information. But here they can also be exposed to misinformation put out by criminal gangs ready to exploit them. Some Syrians, we were told, have lost their family savings in this way. Smugglers advertise on Arabic Facebook groups such as التهريب إلى الاتحاد الأوروبي or “Smuggling into Europe”. This exposes refugees to even greater risks and exacerbates an already dire humanitarian crisis. Despite being a fundamental necessity, phones can be a threat. The digital traces they leave behind make refugees vulnerable to surveillance by the people or governments they are trying to escape, who now use sophisticated tools for tracking the movement of groups using GPS apps. They can also monitor their social media interactions and networks. Smartphone use by refugees illustrates the twin dynamics of digital empowerment and surveillance in particularly extreme ways. Camera phones also often contain images of the very violence and torture that led refugees to leave their homes and flee in the first place. These help when making an asylum claim but, in the wrong hands, expose refugees to even more danger. Whatsapp is one of the most popular apps used by Syrian refugees for this very reason. It is encrypted, so messages can’t be monitored. It is used to circulate vital information such as maps. Place names are shown in Arabic, English and Greek and the means of transport and the cost of each leg of the journey is displayed. You can even see the currency you need to use at each stage of the journey. TAPPING INTO THE NETWORK At the time of our research, refugees were the subject of a huge amount of news coverage. News or information was primarily about them as powerless victims or smartphone-wielding “fake refugees”. News or information was rarely for them. For all their arguments about handling the crisis, our research found that European governments and international news organisations are failing provide the information and news that refugees need to make their journeys and lives safer. European countries should be providing reliable information and the news that refugees need about getting safe passage, their rights on arrival and what is (and isn’t) on offer to them in Europe. This doesn’t happen at the moment because states and news organisations fear being seen as encouraging irregular migration. The European Commission can help here by monitoring the quality, accuracy and credibility of that information. Even if not all refugees have smartphones, 98% of people in Middle East and North Africa now use a mobile phone. They are an untapped resource for the European institutions that have not yet found ways of communicating with refugees. These are the devices we all use to get from A to B but, for a refugee, they could mean the difference between life and death. Warren Buffett just announced he has a stake in Apple (AAPL, BRKA, BRKB)
[Warren Buffett] Berkshire Hathaway owned 9.81 million Apple shares as at the end of the first quarter. The stake was worth more than $1 billion at the time, a regulatory filing from the company headed by Warren Buffett showed Monday. It ranked Berkshire as the 56th largest Apple shareholder, Bloomberg reported. Apple shares climbed more than 2% in pre-market trading after the news crossed. They fell to a near two-year low last week after another regulatory filing — from Appaloosa Management — showed that Dave Tepper had dumped his entire stake in the company. Amid the share-price decline, Alphabet (owner of Google) briefly overtook Apple as the world's most valuable company by market cap. Apple's first-quarter results showed that its revenues fell year-on-year for the first time since 2003. That added to investor concerns about the company, amid a slowdown largely attributed to weakness in China. Because the stake was held as at March 31, it's possible that Berkshire has since adjusted its holding in the company. More to come ... Obama chides Rutgers students for pressuring Condoleezza Rice to back out of commencement speech
[barack obama]Eduardo Munoz Alvarez/Getty Images President Barack Obama chided Rutgers University students for scuttling Condoleezza Rice's planned 2014 commencement address. Rutgers students successfully pressured Rice to back out of her commencement address, citing the former secretary of state's involvement in the Bush administration's decision to invade Iraq. Speaking at the university's commencement Sunday, Obama said pressuring Rice to drop the speech was "misguided." "I don't think it's a secret that I disagree with many of the policies of Dr. Rice and the previous administration. But the notion that this community or this country would be better served by not hearing a former secretary of state or not hearing what she had to say — I believe that's misguided," Obama said. "I don't think that's how democracy works best, when we're not even willing to listen to each other." He added: If you disagree with somebody, bring them in and ask them tough questions. Hold their feet to the fire, make them defend their positions. ... Don't be scared to take somebody on. Don't feel like you got to shut your ears off because you're too fragile and somebody might offend your sensibilities. Go at them if they're not making any sense. In recent years, commencement speeches have occasionally become flash points for campus activism. World leaders like Rice and Christine Lagarde, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund, backed out of speeches in 2014. And this year, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright faced protests from students and some professors at Scripps College. The president has repeatedly noted the commencement-speaker-focused activism, warning students against stifling dissenting opinions. During a commencement address at Howard University earlier this month, Obama recalled how engaging with law enforcement in Illinois helped him pass a piece of anti-racial profiling legislation. "When I was a state senator, I helped pass Illinois’s first racial profiling law, and one of the first laws in the nation requiring the videotaping of confessions in capital cases," Obama said. "I didn’t say to them, 'Oh, you guys are so racist, you need to do something.' I understood, as many of you do, that the overwhelming majority of police officers are good, and honest, and courageous, and fair, and love the communities they serve."
