In Greece, Orthodox Priest Buys Inmates Their Freedom In The Midst Of Financial Crisis
THESSALONIKI, Greece (AP) — Germany made headlines this week by letting Bernie Ecclestone, the Formula One chief, pay $100 million to end his bribery trial. In Greek justice, money talks in a different way: Some inmates jailed for minor offences are allowed to buy their freedom — at an average rate of five euros per day. With the rich at a clear advantage, Greek Orthodox priest Gervasios Raptopoulos has devoted his life to paying off the prison terms of penniless inmates. The soft-spoken 83-year-old with a long white beard and black robes has helped more than 15,000 convicts secure their freedom over nearly four decades, according to records kept by his charity. The Greek rules apply only to people convicted of offences that carry a maximum five-year sentence, such as petty fraud, bodily harm, weapons possession, illegal logging, resisting arrest and minor drugs offences. His work, however, is getting harder. Gervasios, 83, has seen his charity's funds, which all come from private donations, plummet in Greece's financial crisis. And there has been a sharp rise in inmates who can't afford to pay their way out of prison. "Where people would offer 100 euros ($135), they now give 50 ($67). But that doesn't stop us," he told The Associated Press in an interview. The crisis, which has worsened already hellish prison conditions, makes his efforts even more pressing. "Our society rejects inmates and pushes them into the margins," he said. "People often say: 'It serves them right.'" While behind bars, inmates also need money to buy necessities such as toilet paper and soap when the often meagre supplies provided by prison run out. Gervasios helps them, too, either with cash or handouts. Greece has a prison population of about 13,000 — far above capacity — forcing authorities to cram inmates into police holding cells as they wait for a place in jail. Gervasios' charity allocates up to 500 euros ($675) for each prisoner they help, but the amount needed varies. Sometimes a small sum goes a long way. "Once, we gave a man 8.5 euros, which was what he lacked to gain his freedom," he said. "But in exceptional cases we have gone over our limit, giving up to 10,000 euros (13,500) for one prisoner. He was ill and had many children." Based in a village outside the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki, Gervasios says he has visited prisons in some 90 countries — including Madagascar, Australia, Russia, Albania, Israel, Egypt, and New Zealand — trying to secure the release of Greek prisoners there. Gervasios lives with a group of nuns who are the backbone of his charity. He is now officially retired from the priesthood — allowing him to travel regularly to all of Greece's 34 penitentiaries. He tours about once a month to hand out gift bags with clothing, a religious icon and toiletry items such as shaving materials, soap, shampoo and toothpaste. Many prisoners released by his efforts in Greece are foreigners. If they die in prison, the charity pays for their bodies to be taken home. Since launching the charity in 1978, Father Gervasios has received several state awards, including one of the highest civilian honors granted by the government. The Justice Ministry, responsible for Greece's prisons, is unstinting in its praise. "For decades now, Father Gervasios Raptopoulos has carried out exceptional work, offering human warmth and solidarity to prisoners," said Marinos Skandamis, the ministry's secretary-general. It is inmates and prison staff who are the most grateful. "We would send him papers concerning prisoners who could be freed with a cash payment, and details on what they were in prison for," said Costas Kapandais, a former governor at Greece's Komotini and Diavata prisons. "He didn't turn down a single request." Former inmates frequently turn up at the charity headquarters on the outskirts of Playiari, a village some 25 kilometers (15 miles) from Thessaloniki. Some repay the money they received. Other, still in need of help, receive food handouts. "I went to prison because I was selling bread rings without a license," said 60-year-old ex-inmate Dimitris Germanidis. "He paid the fine, and bought off my sentence and so I walked free. ... He helped without knowing me, he didn't even know who the money was going to." Thomas Kotopoulis, 66, said Father Gervasios stepped in to save him from jail when all seemed lost. "A fine had been issued against me," he said. "Every day, the police would come to my home and say that, if I couldn't raise the money I would go to jail. On the very last day, Gervasios came to help. It's like he descended from heaven. ___ Online: Father Gervasios' charity: http://www.diakonia-filakon.gr ___ Follow Kantouris at twitter.com/CostasKantouris

The Analyst Who Nailed The Housing Crash Is Quietly Revealing The Next Big Thing
For years, there have been very few people who have nailed the big, economic themes like Bill McBride, at the economics blog Calculated Risk. McBride's blog took off, famously, when he nailed the housing crash, while others were still saying that "housing only goes up." But unlike many others who have "called the crash" on their resume, McBride didn't stay reflexively bearish. He also called the housing bottom, and the pickup in the economy. We wrote about his call back in early 2012, and it's proven to be accurate. In addition to getting housing right, McBride has generally been right on the overall economy, as well as other interesting sub-stories, such as the comeback of California, and the improvement of the state's finances (remember when everyone thought it was going the way of Greece?). Anyway, lately he's been warming up the next big story: The big demographics tailwind coming to the US economy. Earlier this week he spotted that in 2013, for the first time in several years, there were more babies born in the US than in the year before (it's slight, but you gotta start somewhere). Back in June he noted that the 20-24 demographic is now the largest population cohort in the US. Now a crucial thing here is that while the 20-24 cohort is the largest now, in a few years, the largest group will be those of prime-age workers: 25-29, the age when people really begin to earn better money and buy homes and cars. McBride argues that currently, with so many 20-24 year olds, the demographics are very favorable to apartment renting. And so of course these days, the multi-family housing sector has been leading the way. And you hear all these stories about how people aren't into homeownership anymore. But the demographics that are currently favorable to apartments will turn into demographics favorable to homeownership, as the cohort gets older, moves into higher paying jobs, and wants more space for those new babies. McBride pointed out as such on Twitter, how things were aligning favorably for homeownership. @hblodget @TheStalwart Peak baby years are 25 to 34. Largest cohorts in 2020 will be 25 to 34. Homeowneship rises sharply with babies! — Bill McBride (@calculatedrisk) August 6, 2014 This is the big story to watch. Join the conversation about this story »

This Town Could Die from the Russian Import Embargo to Greece
A long-lasting Russian embargo on Greek fur products could destroy the beautiful town of Kastoria, an international centre of fur trade in Northern Greece. “The town’s economy depends on Russian clients who buy 80% of its production,” warns the Greek Furriers Association in a letter to the Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras. Russia has been banning imports from Europe, after the EU agreed to new sanctions against Russia, targeting its finance, energy and defence sectors over the conflict in Ukraine. Until now fur is excluded from the ban, but Greek fur-makers fear that the Russians might expand the embargo to their fur products. Kastoria and the neighboring town of Siatista, located in the province of West Macedonia, Greece, have a long history of fur production and the most fur manufacturers in Greece. It is estimated that 60% of the area’s population is directly or indirectly occupied in the fur production sector. History of Fur making in Kastoria For decades, fur has been the main export product of Kastoria, while every year an international showcase of fur takes place in the city. Mink, raccoon, fox and chinchilla furs are just some of the materials used for the creations that have had great success in the Russian market. According to the local fur-makers association the processing and marketing of fur has its roots in the 13th century when they estimate the organized leather and fur processing began in Kastoria. Some say Kastorians used to processes the fur of beavers that lived in the town’s lake. They suggest that Kastoria was possibly named after one of the former staples of the trade – the European beaver (kastóras in Greek), now extinct in the area. Others trace the local profession to Byzantine times, while some argue that the art was adopted during the Turkish occupation. After the 16th century there was an increase in demand for fur products, as they became a symbol of social status instead of merely a means of protection against the cold. In the early 1800′s a the fur-makers embraced the technology of the era, with processing machinery and imports of remnant patches for stitching to Kastoria. The excellent quality, imagination and passion of furriers, as well as the large product variety, from coats to hats and gloves established West Macedonia’s reputation around the world. The fur industry’s golden age began in the 60s, when tourists started discovering the beautiful town and its high quality fur, making Kastoria a worldwide “brand name.” Watch the video below about Kastoria and its fur making industry: The town that was affected less by the Greek crisis, as it was dependent on exporting its fur goods – mainly to Russia- could face a vital problem if President Putin decides to expand the Russian import embargo on fur-related products from Greece. The Warning to the Greek PM The Hellenic Association of Furriers (HAF) sent a letter to Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras to warn him about the penalties the European Union has issued against the Russian Federation and the possible impact they may have on the fur industry. In their letter, the furriers of Macedonia stressed that “in any case, the Greek fur industry cannot afford to stop exporting furs to Russia. Ninety-five percent of the industry’s revenues derives from exports and 80% of exports go to Russia, therefore a possible Russian embargo could have devastating results for Greek fur-products manufacturers.” The area already suffers from high unemployment, due to the Greek economic crisis, and the region cannot afford to lose such a large part of its GDP.

Greek Terrorist’s Companion Threatens in Provocative Letter
Paula Roupa, the partner of recently jailed terrorist Nikos Maziotis, says she won’t surrender and she threatens to continue the armed struggle in Greece. This her first public appearance with a provocative letter sent to website indymedia, after the arrest of Maziotis. Nikos Maziotis, the head of the terrorist organization ‘Revolutionary Struggle’ was arrested on July 16, during a shootout in Monastiraki, central Athens, that left four people injured. After Maziotis’ arrest, Roupa took their child and fled their Athens residence, where she was living with the terrorist in Maroussi. In her letter she accuses the Greek Police of the shootout and the injuries caused. Commenting on the reports of the police that the terrorist had been identified before the incident in Monastiraki, she notes that his arrest was accidental. She admits that Maziotis’ arrest affected the action of the organization which though will continue fighting. The officials of the counterterrorism department are afraid that Paula Roupa will proceed with a new attack as she clearly has announced that she will continue the urban guerilla fighting. Although Nikos Maziotis has been arrested, the police hasn’t yet found the arms of his organization, which could mahe a terrorist attach possible in Greece.
