DIMAR Leader: Extension of the Memorandum Equals Continuation of Recession

In a written statement, Democratic Left (DIMAR) President Fotis Kouvelis criticized the Greek government for mishandling the Troika negotiations. The former coalition government partner warned that a possible extension of the Memorandum equals with the continuation of the recession in Greece. “Extension of the Memorandum means extension of its policies, and traps the country into recession, increases unemployment and seriously wounds social cohesion,” Kouvelis wrote. Commenting on the failure of the talks held in Paris on Wednesday, DIMAR’s leader underlined that what took place in Paris and what is being prepared in Athens demonstrates how real is the narrative of the “success story” and the government bombasts on the end of the memoranda. In a direct attack towards the Troika, the Greek politician characterized its stance during the negotiations as unacceptable and accused it for reproducing neoliberal fanaticism, while leading things to the extreme with its policy. Furthermore, Kouvelis underlined that the Troika undermines the cohesion between European partners and requested the government to clarify to the Troika representatives that the Greek people’s limits and strength have already been exhausted. In addition, in a statement that followed Kouvelis’ meeting with the administration of the Athens Chamber of Tradesmen (EEA), he highlighted that Troika’s persistence and ideological fanaticism leads to the society’s dissolution. Finally, Kouvelis repeated that the country’s debt handling needs national convergence and a common approach, while he underlined the importance of supporting small and medium-sized enterprises in order to tackle unemployment.

Greek Supreme Court Charges 14 over Vatopedi Monastery Scandal

Greece’s Supreme Court indicted 14 individuals earlier today over the Vatopedi Monastery land swap scandal that became public in August 2008. The court struck down a Supreme Court deputy prosecutor’s reversal of the indictments, requested by three of the defendants, which had been issued by a criminal appeals court. Those charged are Vatopedi Monastery Abbot Ephraim, monk Arsenios, notary Aikaterini Peleki, attorneys Dionysis Pelekis and Dimitrios Pelekis, former head of the Hellenic Public Real Estate Company (KED) Petros Papageorgiou, KED board member Constantinos Gratsios, former director of KED’s real estate management service Georgios Mitropoulos, former Agriculture Ministry secretary general Constantinos Skiadas and former head of Rural Development Ministry Stamatoula Madeli. Also indicted is former Legal Council of State Vice President Grigoris Krombas, as well as Christodoulos Botsios, Stefanos Detsis and Ioannis Dionysopoulos. The 14 charged are accused of morally or otherwise instigating acts of breach of trust and issuing false certificates in connection with transactions swapping real estate in Lake Vistonida and its shores with prime real estate belonging to the Greek state as well as damaging the state’s interests. The cost to the state is believed to have been at least 100 million euros, while according to financial writer Michael Lewis, a Greek parliamentary commission established to investigate the scandal, estimated the value of government property received by the monastery at one billion euros. The public fury that followed the revelation of the illegal land swaps led the government of New Democracy to cancel the deals and two Ministers resigned, under huge pressure from the media. Ioannis Aggelou, director of Former Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis’ office at the time, was the only person to be acquitted under the specific indictments.

Philip Morris – Papastratos Agree on 25-Million-Euro Investment

Greece’s leading tobacco company Papastratos’ President and CEO Nikitas Theofilopoulos and Philip Morris International Vice President Massimo Andolina announced during a meeting with Development Minister Kostas Skrekas on Wednesday in Athens that the planned 25-million-euro investment is currently in the works. According to the two corporate officials, the plans, which require the expansion of one of the factory’s wings and transform it into an export center, will include the installation of seven new production lines and a new top-level unit for tobacco processing. Furthermore, with the completion of the investment, expected in mid-2015, the factory’s total production will be doubled, while the additional product will be exported to more than 30 countries worldwide, including France, Italy, Switzerland, Hong Kong and Singapore. As the two men underlined, the scheduled plan will create some 50 new job positions, which will be added to the factory’s existing 270. Commenting on the important deal, the Greek company’s official highlighted that this initiative is “securing existing jobs while creating a small number of new ones” and it “is contributing toward the strengthening of the country’s exports.” On his behalf, the Greek Minister expressed the government’s absolute support in such initiatives, which are in line with the country’s new production model. “I am particularly happy that a company of global stature such as Philip Morris International continues to honor our country through Papastratos and assist in our efforts to emerge from the crisis,” Skrekas said. The Phillip Morris official concluded that the international tobacco colossus “remains steady and consistent with its commitment to the country.”

EU Commissioner Moscovici: We Wish to Conclude the Adjustment Program Soon

The negotiations between the Greek government and the Troika commented earlier today the European Union Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs, Pierre Moscovici. He said that the European Commission is willing to find a way that would allow the Troika to return to Athens within a short period of time so that the Greek adjustment program can be concluded as soon as possible. Furthermore, Moscovici said that the deliberations on Greece continue intensively, revealing that he had a phone discussion with Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras yesterday on the issue. The EU Commissioner appeared confident that the negotiations between the two sides, characterized as “tough” by the Greek side, are currently on the right track, while he believes there is greater convergence, as he added. Noting that the European Commission is working intensively towards the direction of an agreement, Moscovici underlined that it is important to take the necessary decision before the nearing critical Eurogroup meeting of December 8. Concluding, Moscovici revealed that his visit to Greece will take place as soon as the negotiations between the Greek government and its international lenders have been concluded.

More Albanian Criminals Captured After Gunman Arrest

As the Albanian gunman who injured 15 people last Saturday was transferred to jail today, Greek police have arrested several Albanian criminals possessing guns. Authorities are investigating if the men are connected. According to Greek police, the 31-year-old Albert Bako is the main gunman in a seven-member gang who have an Albanian named “Claudian” as leader. Another Albanian named “Oldi” and a Polish man are main members. Claudian was captured by police and at the same time another Albanian was arrested in Sepolia in Athens: a man by the nickname of “Mezzi” who is a hired killer. Claudian and Mezzi were wanted for a long time, police says. In Claudian’s house authorities found two handguns and bullets that were sent for ballistics analysis. Police are trying to figure out if Claudian and Mezzi are connected. According to police, Mezzi is suspected of being contracted to murder a high-ranking police officer for a 200,000 euro fee. The same man is suspected of being involved in the murder of a Greek man who allegedly is one of the two killers who murdered two Golden Dawn members in Neo Iraklio in November 2013. Police say that Bako is a psychotic individual who has the profile of a serial killer. He is also known as “Tamtako” and “Maikel” and analysts presume that his reckless behavior means that he wanted to climb the gang hierarchy. Bako was convicted and incarcerated for the first time in 2009 on charges of theft and illegal entry in Greece. After serving in several prisons, he was released from the Domokos prison on August 5, 2014.

Organized every two years under the auspices of the Rural Development and Food ministry, the festival is expected to feature over 70 large, medium and small-scale producers from all of Greece, including the tiniest of islands. The show will include everything from honey-inspired dishes and sweets prepared on the spot by practicing chefs, cocktail-making shows, presentations on the health and pharmaceutical benefits of honey, the role of honey in Greek cuisine and the Mediterranean diet, as well as demonstrations on beekeeping. Visitors will also have the chance to familiarize themselves with the many types of Greek-produced honey and meet the producers. On the sidelines, conferences will be held on topics including the promotion and branding of Greek honey and products, honey and gastronomy, social cooperatives and honey production, the export of Greek honey and products.
