Der Spiegel: Strong Critisism Of Merkel’s Policy Over Greece
German newspaper Der Spiegel strongly criticized Chancellor Angela Merkel in a recent article, for her inefficiency to deal with the Eurozone crisis. Euro crisis is here, Merkel is chasing windmills, her policy aggravates problems rather than solving them, noted the article. According to the columnist Wolfgang Münchau, “The much-advertised pragmatism of Angela Merkel has proven to be an optical illusion.” He explained that the policy of the Chancellor in the field of dealing with the euro crisis is comparable to the efforts of homeowners fighting moisture by repainting the walls. Münchau likens Eurozone to a patient who is suffering from a chronic disease. He cites the decline in growth in the Eurozone countries while he notes that the “disease” is less noticeable in Germany. Concernng the Greek and Portuguese debt, he said: “We are in front of the internal contradictions of a Monetary Union, which only wants to be monetary and nothing more. Rather than resolving the debt crisis with a summit over the debt, we aggravate the problem, transferring the debt from one corner of the system to the other. This looks good, but in reality it doesn’t change anything in the indebtedness of Greece and Portugal.” The German columnist also questioned the policy of purchasing government bonds by the European Central Bank (ECB), which he accused of neglecting the traditional monetary policy and watching the fall in inflation without taking any measures.

Clashes Between Activists and Tour Guides in Acropolis
Clashes occurred on Tuesday morning on the sacred rock of the Acropolis in Athens, Greece, between tour guides and activists protesting against the war in Gaza. The activists hung a banner which read: “Stop Israel Crime at Gaza”. According to reports, tour guides who were in the area attempted to prevent the activists. The conflict resulted in the light injury of a tour guide who intends to file a lawsuit. Greek Police rushed to the site and proceeded with arrests. The Israel-Gaza conflict escalated in 2014 after the continued blockade of the Gaza Strip by the Israeli army since 2007 and the continued rocket attacks from Gaza. The conflict is the deadliest military operation to have taken place in Gaza, with thousands dead and injured, including children and civilians. According to the UN, about 2,000 Palestinians have been killed, 72% of them civilians, including 459 children and 238 women. The Israeli attacks against Palestinian shelters has caused the international condemnation of Israel.

Bloomberg: Athens Stock Exchange Among the Worst Performers
“Among the best-performing Europe gauges in 2013 after the government carried out the world’s biggest-ever debt restructuring, Greece’s ASE Index has become one of the worst,” Bloomberg reports. The stock market is slumping 21% as lenders from Piraeus Bank SA to Eurobank Ergasias SA tumbled, it adds. Re-classified as a developing country in November, Greece saw stocks unscathed by a currency rout plaguing other emerging economies in the first quarter. Now, shares from Brazil to Thailand are rebounding and Greek equities aren’t following, dragged down amid slumps in European markets. According to the report, the ASE has lost 11% since the end of June, the third-biggest drop among 92 national gauges worldwide, and is down 21% since reaching an almost three-year high on March 18. The retreat this quarter compares with declines of 7.7% in Italy’s FTSE MIB Index, 5.2% in Spain’s IBEX 35 Index and a 17% plunge in Portugal’s PSI 20 Index. The Stoxx Europe 600 Index has fallen 2.4% since June 30 amid crises in Ukraine, Iraq and Israel. The MSCI Emerging Markets Index has advanced 2.5% since then. Greek stocks started rallying about three months after the country carried out the world’s biggest sovereign-debt restructuring in March 2012, when the nation got private investors to forgive more than 100 billion euros ($134 billion) of debt. While the ASE is up 128% since its low three months later, it remains down 80% from the high in 2007. The Greek index trades at 42.6 times analysts’ earnings estimates for the next year, compared with 12 for the emerging markets gauge and 15.1 for the Stoxx 600, data compiled by Bloomberg show. Russian sanctions on European Union food imports in retaliation to penalties over the Ukraine crisis threaten to derail the Greek economic recovery. Russia consumes about 25% of Greece’s peach production and half its strawberries. According to Bloomberg, the trade value between Russia and Greece totaled $9.3 billion in 2013, mostly in gas and oil. While economists forecast Europe’s most indebted nation will post its first annual expansion since 2007, a report showed last week that the country’s gross domestic product dropped 0.2% in the second quarter, after a 1.1% decline in the first three months of the year. Bond investors are also walking away from Greece. The Bloomberg index tracking the nation’s debt fell 1.8% since the end of June after five straight quarterly rallies, the longest streak since 2005. The ASE began to climb in June 2012 after plunging 52% in 2011, as Greek corporate profits fell for three years and posted a loss in 2011, according to Bloomberg. Earnings at ASE companies jumped to 73.41 euros a share in 2013, compared with a loss of 216.79 euros per share in 2012.
IKA: Average Salary Drops in Greece
The average salary in the Greek private sector dropped by 10.27% in 2013, while the earnings drop in the construction sector was even steeper, at 15.82%, according to data compiled by Greece’s main social security fund IKA. Additionally, average daily wages fell 6.92% and 7.11% respectively. According to the data, the average daily wage of those in full-time employment (excluding the financial sector) came to 54.66 euros and the average monthly salary to 1,265.08 euros. In part-time employment the respective rates were 25.07 euros and 445.33 euros. The average daily wage in the construction sector was 43.08 euros and the average salary 561.33 euros. The IKA data show that the smaller the business, the lower the remuneration. In businesses with fewer than 10 employees, the average daily wage for full-time work was 63.3% of the average wage at larger firms, while the respective average salary stood at 60.78%. The wages of women in full-time employment stood at 84.4% of those for men, while for part-time work the respective rate was 95.42%. Retail and wholesale commerce remained the largest employers, accounting for 21.98% of jobs. Manufacturing was next with 14.42% and tourism third with 10.90%. IKA data shows that until December 2013, 34% of employees received salaries lower than the salaries of unskilled workers. It also shows that half of the employees insured at the fund had a gross salary of less than 936.64 euros. This means that after subtracting income tax and solidarity contributions, the net earnings of more than half of the private sector employees was a little less than 730 euros. The IKA report notes that the drop in salaries is partly due to the shifting from collective labor agreements to personal contracts and the shifting of full-time to part-time employment. In 2013, more than 400,000 people were working part-time. Also, 23.2% of private sector workers (approximately 372,808 people) receive a salary of less than 500 euros per month. In 2012 it stood at 12%. However, the report notes that there are still 47,656 workers (3% of the total workforce insured at the fund) who receive salaries of 4,000 euros or more per month and 5,116 employees who get over 10,000 euros per month. Interesting to note that the number of employees in this category increased from 3,942 individuals in 2012 to 5,116 in 2013. Moreover, the percentage of employees who receive less than 1,000 euros per month skyrocketed from 37% in 2011, to 53.7% in 2013.

During the three days of the Dormition of Virgin Mary weekend (August 15-17), 16 people drowned in various regions of Greece.
Greece Requests Loan for Athens Metro Line 4
The Greek government plans to meet with the European Investment Bank (EIB) and ask for funds to start construction on the fourth Athens Metro line. The request will be made during the EIB officials’ visit in Greece in September. Greek Infrastructure Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis has announced that the government plans on using EU structural funds and EIB loans in order to fund the project which has been estimated at 3.3 billion euros. During the EIB representatives’ visit in mid-September, the Greek Infrastructure Ministry will present a first-draft plan for the project, which is expected to be a major topic of discussion during the meetings in Athens. The EIB has already invested 1.5 billion euros in the construction of Athens Metro lines, as well as 650 million euros in Thessaloniki’s, which is still under construction. Line 4 will be U-shaped and it will connect the area of Galatsi to Maroussi. The first part of the construction will take place in downtown Athens and Alsos Veikou (Galatsi). This part will stretch for 8.3 kilometers and will be comprised of nine stations. The engineering and environmental studies for the project have already been conducted. The first section will cost around 950 million euros and EIB is expected to provide half of the amount. Line 4 will stretch for a total of 33 kilometers and will have 29 stations.
