WORK HARD, PLAY HARD: The 30 most intense colleges in America
[University North Carolina Chapel Hill UNC Students Fans]Grant Halverson/Getty Images First and foremost, college is about getting an education. But it's also about having fun, going out, and making new friends. Business Insider created a list of schools that best embody this dual principle — the "work hard, play hard" mentality that many students look for. To find the most intense colleges in the country, we combined four rankings from college information site Niche: colleges with the best academics, smartest students, best Greek life colleges, and top party schools. We eliminated any schools that ranked only for academics or only for social life. The list runs the gamut from big state schools, such as the University of Texas and the University of Michigan, to Ivies like Dartmouth and Yale. Take a look at the most intense colleges in America, where students go all out, whether they're studying or partying. _Additional reporting by Andy Kiersz. _ 30. WAKE FOREST UNIVERSITY Streeter Lecka/Getty Images LOCATION: Winston Salem, North Carolina ACADEMICS: A+ PARTY SCENE: A "Academics at Wake are impeccable," one student said. "You will get a great education, albeit with a large workload. The workload is manageable, and if you want to actually learn something in college, go here." Greek life takes over campus on the weekends. "Greek life dominates the party scene, so usually there is either a frat lounge party or off-campus house party every Friday and Saturday night," one freshman noted. 29. UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA Sam Greenwood/Getty Images LOCATION: Gainesville, Florida ACADEMICS: A PARTY SCENE: A+ "A lot of people party — almost every day of the week there's going to be people at the club," one senior said. There's still plenty of time to study, however. "I have never been challenged as much in my academics than I have at UF, but being challenged like this is only going to help me in life after college," a junior noted. 28. TULANE UNIVERSITY Tulane Public Relations/Flickr LOCATION: New Orleans, Louisiana ACADEMICS: A+ PARTY SCENE: A+ "Tulane seamlessly combines social life and academic rigor to provide a great college experience and ensure success after graduation," one sophomore commented. Other students agree — Tulane students study as hard as they party. "Most students follow the 'work hard, play hard' model religiously," one freshman reported. "Most students study all day and go out after. People do go out a decent amount during the week, as many of the bars have deals during weeknights." SEE THE REST OF THE STORY AT BUSINESS INSIDER

No visa-free travel, no migrant deal, says Turkey’s EU minister
Turkey’s minister for European Union affairs and its chief negotiator with the bloc, Volkan Bozkır, said if the EU does not grant Turkish citizens visa-free travel, Turkey could stop accepting migrants sent from Greece
There once was a prickly sultan
BEFORE reading a “poem” on German television on March 31st, Jan Böhmermann, a satirist of questionable tact, explained that he wanted to clarify the boundaries of free-speech law. He then declaimed a series of obviously fictional passages (in rhyming verse) depicting Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the president of Turkey, engrossed in a series of athletically challenging sexual activities with barnyard animals. By the time the broadcaster took the video off its website a day later, it had caused a diplomatic fracas between Turkey and Germany. The tension had been a long time brewing. In 2007 the chancellor, Angela Merkel, snubbed Mr Erdogan by opposing Turkish membership of the European Union. As Mr Erdogan’s rule became increasingly autocratic, Mrs Merkel often chided him for nobbling dissidents and the press. But in 2015 refugees started streaming into the EU via Turkey. Suddenly Mrs Merkel needed Mr Erdogan’s help. The result is the deal that the EU, at Mrs Merkel’s prodding, made with Turkey last month. In return for taking back migrants from Greece and cracking down on people-smugglers, Turkey gets billions in aid and new talks...
All quiet on the Aegean front
ZIPPING across the choppy Aegean in his powerboat, Nassos Karakitsos, a volunteer with a search-and-rescue NGO called Emergency Response Centre International, scans the horizon for refugees. He spots none. A few months ago the seas around the Greek island of Lesbos were filled with overstuffed rubber dinghies (“balloons with engines”, Mr Karakitsos calls them) carrying Afghans, Iraqis and Syrians from the Turkish coast. Today they are home only to the more forbidding vessels of the Greek coast guard, Frontex (the European Union’s border agency) and NATO, lately arrived to help with maritime surveillance. The quiet seas are the result of a deal struck between the EU and Turkey to reduce migrant flows, which came into effect on March 20th. It took everyone by surprise, says a European official on Lesbos, and there were teething troubles: the police tailed a Turkish liaison officer stationed on the island, suspecting he was a spy. But for now the migrants have stopped coming. Some of the scrappy volunteer groups that flocked to Lesbos last autumn, when 6,000 refugees might clamber ashore in one day, are closing shop. Larger organisations are moving...

Bulgaria's PM Foresees 'Permanent Destabilization' of Macedonia
Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has predicted a gloomy political future for Macedonia, casting doubt whether the early elections scheduled for June 05 will take place at all. "Macedonia will be permanently destabilized in my opinion, let's hope I am wrong," Dnevnik.bg quotes him as saying after a national security council meeting. Borisov also noted information had been received of intentional destabilization of countries in the region such as Macedonia, citing Wednesday's attempts of migrants to break into the country from Greece. He said Macedonian President Gjorge Ivanov had warned the EU and counterparts in the region that "provocations" were being prepared against the state. His comments follow two days of tensions in the country over a decision of President Gjorge Ivanov to halt proceedings against dozens of politicians over their alleged involvement in a wiretapping scandal. The move sparked controversy, with protesters taking to the streets of Skopje both on Tuesday and Wednesday evening. Earlier on Thursday, Bulgarian Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov called on Macedonian politicians to renew dialogue and help the country return on its European track.

EU referendum: Corbyn says pro-Europe stance is 'not half-hearted' – live
Rolling coverage of all the day’s political developments as they happen, including Jeremy Corbyn’s speech on the EU referendum * Corbyn’s EU speech - Verdict 1.21pm BST We are now expecting to get the decision about whether Grassroots Out (GO) will launch a legal challenge against the Electoral Commission’s decision not to make it the lead Leave campaign after 3pm, my colleague Rowena Mason reports. Originally the decision was due before noon. Now expecting Leave.EU statement about whether they will judicially review designation after 3pm... 1.15pm BST You can read the full text of Jeremy Corbyn’s speech here but, as I said earlier, the best material was in the Q&A. Here are the key quotes from it. There’s nothing half-hearted about what we are doing. There is nothing half-hearted about our campaigning. There is nothing half-hearted about our alliances. I’ve attended a number of meetings of the Party of European Socialists. I’ve had lengthy conversations with prime ministers and party leaders all across Europe on the social justice case, the environmental case, issues of climate change, trade and steel. I’ve made numerous speeches on these subjects. There is nothing half-hearted about what we are doing. We are putting forward a political agenda about social justice in this country, driving down tax evasion in this country, but we are also putting the international case on human rights and justice and social justice all across Europe. That is what we’re doing. You’ll hear plenty from us on this. There is nothing half-hearted about anything I do. Yes, I’ve been critical of many things within the European Union. I think you have probably gathered from my speech I’ve criticisms of the European Union. This is a decision about whether we stay in and argue for the kind of socially just Europe that I want, that our party wants, that the vast majority of trade unions and ordinary people of this country want. Or we walk away from it. That’s the decision that has been made. Does it mean I recant on everything I have ever said or done? Absolutely not. I’m sorry about that. We’ve had a very big debate within the Labour party and within trade unions. Overwhelming the Labour party and trade unions have come to the view that they wato to campaign for a social, just Europe ... That is the position we’ve reached. That is the position that has been adopted by the party. That is the party that I lead and that is the position I’m putting forward. I want to be part of a government that leads the way on climate change, leads the way on air quality, leads the way on pollution, leads the way on sustainability, leads the way on recycling and stops this attitude that somehow or other everything is expendable, everything is disposable and we can carry on destroying habits and the planet on which we live. Eventually that attitude will destroy us. There has to be an attitude of mind that everyone one of those people that is shuttling now between Turkey and Greece, all those people in refugee camps in Greece, or indeed people in refugee camps in Calais or Dunkirk - they’re all human beings, just like you and me. In a different set of circumstances we could all be in those refugee camps. Therefore I want to be part of a voice demanding a humanitarian and human approach dealing with this, that every European country plays its part, as Germany has done, in supporting and taking refugees so that they can live and contribute ... What I want is an attitude of mind that understands the humanitarian issues. You are not going to solve the refugee crisis with tear gas, barbed wire, electronic surveillance and hatred. You will only solve it by mutual action, support and understanding of the human needs of everyone one of us to survive. And I wish to contribute to a stronger society for everbody else. Continue reading...
