Greece's Fate Lies in Athens' Hands, Not Berlin's
One of the Greek government’s biggest mistakes since taking office in January has been to assume that its fate lay in German hands. For the first two months, it refused to deal with the “Troika” of international lenders—comprising the European ...
Rift talk may be self-fulfilling prophecy
The Greek government has submitted the long-awaited list of reforms to the lenders but the initial signs do not point to an agreement anytime soon that could open the spigots of liquidity to the cash strapped economy. Fully aware of the difficult choices ahead, some in the government obviously think they could strengthen the country’s negotiating position by raising the specter of a breakup in the negotiations with the lenders that could even lead to a euro exit. However, these tactics weaken Greece’s position further rather than strengthening it and should be abandoned.
Hooligans mar PAOK's handball cup triumph
PAOK won its second Greek Cup in handball beating AEK 29-27 in Sunday’s final in Thessaloniki, but the clashes between AEK fans and the police as well as the exchange of lethal flares between the two sets of fans and their clash the day before illustrated that Greek hooligans do not need soccer or basketball games to wreak havoc on any given Sunday.

Twelve Released Over Explosion at Athens Police Station
Twelve people were released early on Sunday after being rounded up by police on suspicion of placing self-made bombs outside the police station at the Dafni district of Athens on Saturday night. About 25 people wearing hoodies and helmets threw several bombs at the station a little after 10:30 pm on Saturday, damaging three police cars but without injuring anyone. Police motorcycle squad (DIAS) arrested twelve people for identification. Early on Sunday morning, at 4:30 am, another police station was attacked by self-made bombs at the Zografos area of Athens in a similar manner. They slightly damaged the building’s entrance and the roof of a police car parked outside. Police did not find the perpetrators. In other incidents, this time around the Athens Polytechnic, two people aged 20 and 21 were arrested on Saturday and are expected to appear before prosecutors today, following an anti-establishment rally in downtown Athens. Case files were drawn up against them for damaging property and disturbing the peace. According to Greek police, a group participating in a march from Monastiraki Square to Syntagma, spray-painted buildings and injured a Monastiraki shop owner. Then they walked to the Polytechnic, entered the building and placed trash bins as barricades before setting them on fire, after which they attacked police with stones and other objects. The 21-year-old has been previously arrested for similar incidents in December 2014 and was set free on condition he would appear at the local police station the first half of each month. Greek Deputy FinMin: New Electronic System to Track Deposits 15 Years Back
A new electronic system will track bank deposits as far back as the last 15 years and help fight tax evasion by wealthy Greeks, Deputy Finance Minister Nadia Valavani told Sunday’s “Avgi” newspaper. Valavani also said that cash registers will be electronically linked to the Finance Ministry’s central information system and that card payments will be expanded. The bank deposit registry, she said, will give authorities the ability to immediately check the real tax-paying ability of an individual. The registry “will facilitate the government’s plans for the option of ‘voluntarily stating’ – without penal offenses – funds of tax evasion, not from kickbacks or other criminal activities, that exist or have gone through bank accounts in Greece and abroad,” Valavani explained. Doctors and lawyers will also be able to connect to the system, she said. In terms of the 12,000-euro tax exemption for individuals, the Deputy Minister said that it will be legislated in the second half of this year and will be applied to 2015 revenues. “The only people we finally hope to burden [with taxes] are those who have been taxed at much lower rates than their actual tax-paying ability – due to tax evasion or the so-called legal tax evasion,” Valavani said. Asked to comment on the lower VAT status on Greek islands, she said the reasons for reduced VAT rates on popular Aegean islands like Mykonos and Santorini are no longer valid. “I do not understand why thoughts of aligning these two islands with the VAT rates of the rest of the country raises protests from the mayor of Lesvos for example – is it out of solidarity?” she asked. Among other things, she said that taxes on drinks and cigarettes are already very high. (source: ana-mpa)

Extreme-right Golden Dawn MP Christos Pappas was released from jail on Sunday, as the 18-month limit of pretrial detention has expired. The Greek Council also issued restrictions, forbidding Pappas from leaving the country, travelling outside the region of Attica and ordering him to present himself to a local police department three times a month as well as spend nights only at his home. Party leader Nikos Michaloliakos and MP Yiannis Lagos have also been released at an earlier date, under conditions; they are both allowed to attend Parliament sessions. Tsipras: Greece Seeks No Rift with Europe
After the Greek government submitted its reforms list, currently being examined by the Brussels Group, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras stated that the country does not wish to cause a rift with Europe. In order for the country to avoid bankruptcy, the next bailout program installment needs to be unlocked so that Greece will be able to remain afloat. According to Reuters, the country will run out of money by April 20, if the cash is not disbursed in time. “The liquidity problem is naturally hampering the situation but I believe that will be tackled immediately once we reach an agreement over reforms,” Tsipras said in an interview with Sunday newspaper Real News. Furthermore, Tsipras also spoke about corruption within the country and the government’s attempts and measures to deal with it. He was also asked whether he wished to come to an agreement with Europe and the country’s official creditors (IMF/EU/ECB). “My view has always been the same: a break from corruption, a solution with Europe,” he replied.
