BBC Studios and China’s Bilibili announce new documentary series Ancients, revealing the dramatic story of early civilisations to Chinese audiences

Dec 20, 2020 Picture:  At 2020 Guangzhou International Documentary Film Festival, BBC Studios and Bilibili, one of China’s foremost online entertainment platforms, announced that Ancients will be their first international co-production to feature Chinese stories, following an enhanced cooperation agreement signed in October. The new six-part history series will bring together the history of early Eastern and Western civilisations; using stunning documentary visuals and stylish CGI to tell the extraordinary story of the world’s greatest ancient cultures on one epic timeline, stretching back 5,000 years. Presented by world-leading historical specialists, each episode will use the very latest scientific and archaeological discoveries to reveal the tools, technologies, strategies and systems that decided the fate of Ancient Chinese, Egyptians, Indians, Greeks and Romans as they fought wars, battled the climate and established the rich and fascinating cultures which laid the foundations for the modern world. The series will show why the fortunes of some civilisations rose while others fell; ultimately revealing how the destinies of Ancient East and West became inextricably connected as global trade routes took shape and China’s economic success saw it locked in competition with the Roman Empire. The co-production of this new series follows BBC Studios and Bilibilis’ multi-year strategic cooperation agreement in October. This deal aims to significantly enhance the Chinese platform’s premium content offering from BBC Studios and take their existing partnership to a new level. It has also been announced that Bilibili has commissioned BBC Studios’ Science Unit to produce Odyssey into the Future, a series featuring the globally successful Chinese science fiction author Liu Cixin. Tom McDonald, Director of Factual, BBC Studios Production, remarked, “This new series reflects the deeper level of partnership between BBC Studios and Bilibili, as we collaborate to produce world-leading documentaries which resonate with audiences in China and across the world. This will be a history series underpinned by cutting edge technology and contemporary storytelling.” “The development of Chinese stories is a key element in BBC Studios and Bilibili's strengthened partnership. Through the co-production of Ancients, we hope to jointly bring to the global stage some of China’s rich cultural and historical stories together along with other civilisations,” said Li Ni, Vice Chairwoman and Chief Operating Officer of Bilibili. “This partnership is also in line with our commitment to providing premium quality content that caters to the tastes and demands of our growing base of users, mostly young Chinese audience who have been raised in China’s post-reform era with elevated living standards, educational levels and increasing demand for sophisticated cultural products.” Ancients is being co-produced by BBC Studios and Bilibili and will be distributed by BBC Studios. This series is currently in preparation for production. - - Ends- Sabrina Liu Communications Manager GREATER CHINA • • • • • Mob: +86 187 1012 3106 Fax: +86 10 6500 2069 Sabrina.liu@bbc.com R05-06, F11, Tower A, Parkview Green, 9 Dongdaqiao Road, Chaoyang District, Beijing 100020 北京市朝阳区东大桥路9号侨福芳草地大厦A座11层05-06室 100020 -bbcstudios.com Category:  PR News Collaboration / Partnership Entertainment & Music Marketing Communications News & Media Tourism & Destinations FeaturedNews:  Show in Featured News TopPicture:

As I watched him I felt great respect for him but I also had a sinking feeling because I know where the real failure was. If I was a staff officer and planner on his staff my tail would be between my legs because I would know it is my mistake and a staff mistake and that we let down the boss.  He accepts full responsibility in public when in fact this was staff officer failure.  The second part of the statement is true - the staff is learning from it - we will get better and we will not make the same mistake again.  He covered for us and we owe him better work in the future. As an aside if you watched the response by the media to his statements his acceptance of responsibility diffused further criticism and forced everyone to focus on substantive issues.  He showed us how it is done. Many people should learn from him. Excerpts: “It was a planning error, and I am responsible,” Army Gen. Gustave Perna said. “We’re learning from it. We’re trying to get better.” ... “The mistake I made is not understanding with exactness — again, my responsibility —on all the steps that have to occur to make sure the vaccine is releasable,” Perna said. _2. HOW TO RESPOND TO RUSSIA’S SOLARWINDS CYBERATTACK_ Bloomberg · by Hal Brands · December 18, 2020 From one of America's most important experts on strategy - especially grand strategy.  I think the subtitle is accurate.  Putin has taken cyberwar to a new level.   _3. EXPLAINER-U.S. GOVERNMENT HACK: ESPIONAGE OR ACT OF WAR?_ uk.reuters.com · by Jan Wolfe, Brendan Pierson, Raphael Satter and Michelle Nichols   _4. OPINION | THE WORLD IS FULL OF CHALLENGES. Excerpts: “Supporters of the split argue that keeping the two organizations under the dual-hat arrangement creates inefficiencies.” “The missions of NSA and Cyber Command will continue to compete for priority and advocacy under the dual hat,” Andrew Schoka, an active duty Army cyber operations officer assigned to Cyber Command, wrote in War on the Rocks in 2019. Should Milley and Miller make the necessary certifications to Congress, the practical implications of the move will be neither immediate nor irreversible. “If anything, I’d imagine a direction of a breakup but with an implementation period of six to twelve months,” the administration official said. “Leaves space to reverse it but puts a marker down for CYBERCOM to get off the NSA teat.”   _9. CHINA’S REBEL HISTORIANS_ The Atlantic · by Barbara Demick · December 18, 2020 Another book for the "to read" pile. Conclusion: “Yang, now 81, is still living in Beijing. He was so nervous about the repercussions of _The World Turned Upside Down_ that he initially tried to delay publication of the English edition, according to friends, out of worry that his grandson—who was applying to university—might bear the brunt of reprisals. But the repressive political climate in China today makes honest assessments of Communist Party history ever more urgent, Guo told me. “Ever since the time of Zuo Qiuming [a historian from the sixth and fifth centuries B.C.] and Confucius, truthfully recorded history has been considered a mirror against which the present is viewed and a stern warning against rulers’ abuse of power.” He pointed as well to a more contemporary, Western source, George Orwell’s _1984_, and its mantra, “Who controls the past controls the future: Who controls the present controls the past.” Unlike the imperial dynasties, the Communist Party can’t claim a mandate from heaven. “If it admits error,” Guo said, “it loses legitimacy.”   _10. LE CARRÉ'S DEATH TOUCHED ME. All I am saying is, they are either being completely naive, and falling prey to the mystique of needing a “Tier One operator” to teach their guys basic stuff and are thus willing to shell out a ton of money for it; or, they are cloaking this contract request in seemingly innocuous language, and have other plans in mind for the contractors. Interview of Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis on Parapolitika FM, with journalists Christina Korai and Dimitris Takis

“If Turkey wants to maintain its western orientation, its stance will have to be sincere, and not just a pretext,” Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis stressed in his interview on Parapolitika FM, with journalists Christina Korai and Dimitris Takis. More specifically, Mr. Varvitsiotis noted that “we do not accept dialogue based on mere pretext,” adding that, on the European level, with the conclusions of the recent meeting of the European Council, “Europe will not accept a merely professed abandonment of Turkey's aggressive and revisionist strategy. Its change of strategy must be clear, lasting and sincere.” The Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs clarified that “the withdrawal of the Oruc Reis from the southeastern Mediterranean does not suffice, on its own, as a basis for proceeding to exploratory talks.” In the same context, Mr. Varvitsiotis underscored that it is up to Turkey to show, in practice, that it is moving to de-escalate the situation, stressing that “it is up to Turkey to convince all of us – Greece and the other European partners – that it is in fact a trusted interlocutor. Turkey has disrupted these relations and it is now up to Turkey to send the right messages.” Finally, the Alternate Minister made special mention of the debate that has been initiated on Turkey’s geopolitical orientation, noting that Greece wants to see a Turkey with a clear western and Euroatlantic orientation, rather than a Turkey estranged from the west.
