Trump says Mnuchin's comments on the dollar were 'taken out of context'

[trump] * PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP ON THURSDAY SAID TREASURY SECRETARY STEVE MNUCHIN'S REMARKS ON THE DOLLAR WERE "TAKEN OUT OF CONTEXT." * ON WEDNESDAY, MNUCHIN SAID A WEAKER DOLLAR WAS GOOD FOR US TRADE.  * TRUMP TOLD CNBC: "THE DOLLAR IS GOING TO GET STRONGER AND STRONGER, AND ULTIMATELY I WANT TO SEE A STRONG DOLLAR." ------------------------- President Donald Trump said Thursday that earlier comments by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on the dollar were "taken out of context." On Wednesday, Mnuchin told reporters at the World Economic Forum in Davos that a weaker dollar is good for the US "as it relates to trade and opportunities." His comments triggered the dollar's worst sell-off in 10 months. "Our country is becoming so economically strong ... that the dollar is going to get stronger and stronger, Trump told CNBC. "And ultimately, I want to see a strong dollar." A weaker dollar cheapens American products for foreign buyers, which makes US exports more attractive. But it could also erode the US's purchasing power.  The dollar index, which tracks it against a basket of other major currencies, spiked following Trump's comments and reversed its earlier losses to as high as 89.23.  The index fell deeper into a three-year low Thursday after Mnuchin's comments. Greg Valliere, the chief strategist at Horizon Investments described the comments as "the first serious economic misstep by the Trump administration." Mnuchin's comments spooked some investors because it's unusual for an administration to actively favor a weaker dollar, and some saw the White House weaponizing the currency in its trade policy. Here comes Intel earnings... (INTC)

[Intel CEO Brian Krzanich] * INTEL WILL REPORT EARNINGS AFTER THE BELL ON THURSDAY. * ANALYSTS WILL BE WATCHING FOR MORE CLARITY FROM THE COMPANY ABOUT HOW IT IS DEALING WITH THE SPECTRE AND MELTDOWN SECURITY FLAWS. * WATCH INTEL'S STOCK PRICE MOVE IN REAL TIME HERE. ------------------------- Intel is set to report its fourth-quarter earnings after the bell on Thursday. Wall Street analysts are expecting adjusted earnings of $0.86 per share on revenue of $16.347 billion. Analysts have mixed feelings on the stock ahead of the report. About 56% of the analysts surveyed by Bloomberg have a buy rating, on the stock, and the rest rate the company as neutral or sell. Young investors on the trading app Stockpile, which lets users trade in fractional shares, don’t share Wall Street’s concerns. Users of Stockpile are buying Intel shares 10 times more often than they are selling them, the company told Markets Insider. Analysts will be watching for more clarity around several major security flaws that were disclosed earlier this month. The Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities potentially give bad actors access to sensitive information they wouldn't otherwise be able to see. All of the major CPU manufacturers are affected by the flaws, but Intel's chips have taken the brunt of the criticism and backlash. Patches to fix the vulnerabilities have been shipped for recently manufactured CPUs and most of the major operating systems but have not completely solved the problems. The founder of Linux sent an exceptionally angry email to a developer listserve accusing Intel of issuing "PR blurbs" instead of effectively fixing the problems. John Pitzer, an analyst at Credit Suisse, thinks that the flaws ultimately won't be an issue for the company, but that sales from the first half of the year might be delayed until more clarity from the company is received. "While Meltdown/Spectre could cause purchases to be postponed in 1H, it still too early to tell, and we doubt INTC will guide to such an event for fear of driving a self-fulfilling prophecy," Pitzer said. _Check out Tech Insider's live story for the earnings results when they cross.[intel stock price]_ SEE ALSO: THE INVENTOR OF LINUX IS FURIOUS AT INTEL Join the conversation about this story » NOW WATCH: How the ancient Greeks proved Earth was round over 2,000 years ago

11 key findings from one of the most comprehensive reports ever on the health effects of vaping

[marijuana vaporizer vaping vape]Eduardo Munoz/Reuters * MILLIONS OF AMERICANS VAPE, BUT LITTLE IS KNOWN ABOUT THE COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH EFFECTS OF E-CIGARETTES. * THE NATIONAL ACADEMIES OF SCIENCE, ENGINEERING, AND MEDICINE AIMED TO ADDRESS THAT DEARTH OF KNOWLEDGE WITH A NEW REPORT ON E-CIGS. * IN LINE WITH THE ACADEMIES' PREVIOUS APPROACH TO OTHER DRUGS, THE REPORT POOLS ITS FINDINGS INTO CATEGORIES BASED ON HOW MUCH EVIDENCE THERE IS TO DRAW A CONCLUSION. * TWO KEY FINDINGS FROM THE REPORT SUGGEST THAT WHILE VAPING MAY HELP ADULTS QUIT SMOKING CONVENTIONAL CIGARETTES, THE PRACTICE MAY ALSO ENCOURAGE YOUNG PEOPLE TO START. ------------------------- It's been almost a decade since the first vape pen hit store shelves. The whiteboard marker-sized devices, which vaporized liquid nicotine rather than burning tobacco and creating tar, were designed as a healthier alternative to cancer-causing conventional cigarettes. Since then, thousands of models of vape pens have been made available, but a question among public health researchers continued to linger: Do these devices help smokers quit or glorify a potentially unhealthy habit? The answer, according to a large new report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, is a little bit of both. While vaping may help adults quit conventional cigarettes, the practice may also encourage young people to start, the authors of the report found. Still, although vaping comes with health risks, it is likely to be far less harmful overall than smoking conventional cigarettes. ”E-cigarettes cannot be simply categorized as either beneficial or harmful,” David Eaton, the chair of the committee that wrote the report and the dean and vice provost of the Graduate School of the University of Washington, Seattle, said in a statement. Eaton said that in certain circumstances — such as when teens use them and become addicted to nicotine — e-cigarettes' "adverse effects clearly warrant concern." But in other cases — like when adults turn to e-cigs to quit smoking — "they offer an opportunity to reduce smoking-related illness.” [Martin Borne, co-founder of electronic cigarette retailer ]Thomson Reuters For his report, Eaton and his team reviewed roughly 5,000 studies and narrowed down their analysis to include findings from more than 800 papers. In line with the Academies' previous approach to other drugs, the new report pools its findings on e-cigarettes into categories based on how much evidence there is to draw a conclusion. When there is only limited evidence that there's a relationship between two things, such as vaping and cancer, the researchers use the phrase "limited evidence." The same logic applies when there is conclusive evidence for such a relationship. Here are some of their key findings: * YOUNG PEOPLE WHO VAPE ARE AT A HIGHER RISK FOR EVER USING A CONVENTIONAL CIGARETTE than young people who don't — substantial evidence. * EXPOSURE TO NICOTINE FROM VAPING IS HIGHLY VARIABLE and depends on the device and the e-liquid — conclusive evidence. That said, the report also notes that experienced users can and do use e-cigs in a way that allows them to get a comparable amount of nicotine from the devices as they would from a regular cigarette. * Except for nicotine, EXPOSURE TO POTENTIALLY TOXIC SUBSTANCES FROM E-CIGS IS SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER compared with conventional cigarettes — substantial evidence. * While there is substantial evidence that VAPING RESULTS IN SYMPTOMS OF DEPENDENCE, there is moderate evidence that THE RISK AND SEVERITY IS LOWER FOR E-CIGS THAN FOR REGULAR CIGARETTES. Again, this appears to depend on factors like the type of device and the e-liquid used. * SWAPPING E-CIGARETTES FOR CONVENTIONAL CIGARETTES REDUCES USERS’ EXPOSURE to many of the toxins and cancer-causing agents in regular cigarettes — conclusive evidence. There is also substantial evidence that completely switching to e-cigs from conventional cigarettes reduces short-term negative health outcomes in organs like the lungs and heart. * Studies in animals — but not yet in humans — suggest that LONG-TERM VAPING COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF CANCER — limited evidence. * While there is moderate evidence that TEENS WHO USE E-CIGARETTES MAY SEE INCREASED COUGHING WHEEZING, AND WORSENED ASTHMA SYMPTOMS, there is no available evidence on whether or not e-cigs cause respiratory disease. * There is no available evidence whether or not vaping affects pregnancy or fetal development. * Although there is conclusive evidence that e-cig use increases airborne concentrations of key pollutants and nicotine in indoor environments, SECOND-HAND EXPOSURE TO NICOTINE AND POLLUTANTS IS LOWER FROM E-CIGS than from regular cigarettes. * E-cigarettes can explode and cause serious injury — conclusive evidence. * Exposing oneself to e-liquids, either from drinking or touching them, can cause seizures, brain injury, and vomiting — conclusive evidence. Despite these conclusions, the big question of whether e-cigarettes have an overall positive or negative impact on public health remains unanswered. "Given their relatively recent introduction, there has been little time for a scientific body of evidence to develop on the health effects of e-cigarettes," the authors write in their report. In other words, only time will tell. NOW WATCH: How the ancient Greeks proved Earth was round over 2,000 years ago

8 easy hacks for getting the best deals on travel in 2018

[Forgetting Sarah Marshall Gallery 5]Uphe.com * IT'S OFFICIAL: IF YOU WANT THE BEST DEAL ON A VACATION RENTAL IN 2018, YOU SHOULD BOOK EARLY. * ACCORDING TO HOMEAWAY'S DATA, EVERYONE BOOKS RENTALS AT WHAT THEY CALL "PEAK TIMES"—BUT FOR A BETTER DEAL YOU SHOULD BOOK BEFORE THESE TIMES. * FOR EXAMPLE, FOR FOURTH OF JULY WEEKEND, BOOK BY MAY TO GET THE BEST DEAL. ------------------------- If you’re not a fan of the long month of January, it looks like you’re not alone—according to a recent study done by vacation rental company HomeAway, January is the busiest vacation booking month of the year. In fact, the number of people interested in reserving vacation homes doubles this month, and it makes sense: People plan now so that they have something to look forward to for the year. According to HomeAway’s data, if you too want to get in on some of 2018’s hottest destinations, you’d better act fast. After looking at the more than 2 million places that are available to rent on their site, HomeAway's determined it: There’s now proof that booking early really does pay off. “HomeAway’s data analysts have figured out where the demand surge is for each of the busiest travel times of the year. If you plan your trip before that surge, you’ll have a better chance of finding the perfect home for your group for the amount you want to spend,” Melanie Fish, HomeAway’s travel expert, said in a statement. Whether you’re looking for the perfect beach house, cabin, or condo to relax in, beating the peak booking times means you’ll have the best selection. Plus, with more rentals to choose from earlier on, you’re more likely to find a deal in your budget. Mark your calendars, though, because each of the most popular vacation times has a different peak booking window, and that’s what you want to avoid.  Here’s the breakdown: IF YOU’RE THINKING ABOUT SPRING BREAK, BOOK BEFORE JANUARY.[spring breakers]"Spring Breakers" This is one where people start prepping early. Planning peaks in January, so HomeAway advises choosing a place to stay before January for the biggest selection. IF YOU’RE LOOKING FORWARD TO SUMMER, BOOK FROM JANUARY TO MARCH. [Beach Summer]REUTERS/Arben Celi It’s really never too early to think summer vibes. The best way to get ahead of the demand is to book in January—but if that’s too soon to plan, April 1 is when the majority of places booked on HomeAway have been chosen. FOR FOURTH OF JULY WEEKEND, BOOK BY MAY. [hot dog july 4th american flag]Jay Wennington/Unsplash A long weekend in the summer is popular for people to plan a trip. Lock down your stay before May 1 to get ahead of the curve. FOR MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND, BOOK IN JANUARY OR BEFORE MARCH. [barack obama vacation]@hijack/Instagram As it's another popular time for people to get away, many book in January in anticipation of summer's big kickoff. Need more time? Book before March for the biggest range of home sizes, locations, and prices available. FOR LABOR DAY WEEKEND, BOOK AFTER JULY 4. [1st Place_Wild Vacations_Olivia Moll Pinnell_UK]Olivia Moll Pinnell People tend to wait longer to plan their end of summer getaway. Book right after the Fourth of July to beat the demand surge. IF YOU’RE READY FOR SKI SEASON, BOOK BY MID-OCTOBER. [Woman Skiing Snowboarding Mountains Snow]Flickr / marketing deluxe The best selection of ski inventory is available from early fall until about midway through October. Half of all in-season ski rentals booked on HomeAway were snapped up by December. FOR THANKSGIVING, BOOK BY OCTOBER 2. [thanksgiving friends]Screenshot courtesy of NBC This holiday tends to be a favorite for last-minute bookers: You can still beat the demand surge if you book by October 2. FOR CHRISTMAS, BOOK BEFORE THE END OF OCTOBER. [Woman reading book windo]Shutterstock The sweet spot for Christmas bookings is three months before your trip—this will give you the best selection to celebrate the holiday. And if you’re looking to get in on 2018's travel trend of unconventional accommodations, there’s even more reason to book ahead—some of these unique properties are in high demand. Waterfront properties, vacation homes near popular attractions like Disney World, and places with popular features like swimming pools are also snapped up first by travelers, so you're more likely to get what you want if you plan a little in advance.  Between booking ahead of "the surge" and choosing a vacation rental home over a hotel or resort, you're getting the most bang for your buck. HomeAway explains that in general, vacation homes offer travelers twice the space at about half the cost... and inviting friends and family to join in on a rental (thereby splitting the cost) is a great, budget-friendly way to travel. Plus, HomeAway allows you to search by price, so you can find something that fits your budget.  As to where people will most likely be traveling, HomeAway’s data suggests an affinity for the Sunshine State, with Panama City Beach, Florida, topping the list of the site’s hottest destinations based on overall demand. People are also likely to flock to places like San Diego, California, and the Gulf Shores of Alabama, along with Paris, Rome, and Florence internationally.  _Sign up __here__ to get INSIDER's favorite stories straight to your inbox._ NOW WATCH: How the ancient Greeks proved Earth was round over 2,000 years ago

The 10 towns where it's cheapest to buy a beach house in the US

[shutterstock_275069369]Fotoluminate LLC/Shutterstock * THERE ARE A NUMBER OF TOWNS AND CITIES ACROSS THE U.S. WHERE A SUN-SOAKED PROPERTY COMES AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE.  * THE CHEAPEST LOCATION IS GULFPORT, MISSISSIPPI, WHERE A BEACH HOUSE COSTS IN THE REALM OF $116,200 — WITH THE ADDED BONUS OF YEAR-ROUND SUNSHINE.  * THE PROPERTY VALUE WAS RANKED NOT ONLY BY PROPERTY PRICES, BUT ALSO BY TAXES, NUMBER OF ROOMS, AND MONTHLY HOUSING COSTS.  ------------------------- As winter drags on you may catch yourself wondering if summer is ever coming back. But it doesn't have to be that way. There are plenty of towns across America where it's possible to spend a few weeks or, if you're retired, a few months soaking in some warm weather. But, as that year-round warm weather is in demand, affording a home in one of the places can be difficult. With this in mind we decided to find the best beach towns which won't break your account. Below we rank the most affordable beach towns for 2018. In order to rank the most affordable beach towns we looked at data on 221 cities. We compared them across four affordability metrics. We looked at median home value, median housing cost, median number of rooms per house and median property taxes paid. Check out our data and methodology below to see where we got our data and how we put it together. KEY FINDINGS * NO DRAMATIC CHANGES — What was affordable last year remains affordable this year, for the most part. Only one city, Freeport, lost its place in our top 10, dropping to 17th. There is also only one newcomer to the top 10. Melbourne, which was 11th last year, took 10th this year and Fort Walton Beach, which was seventh last year, dropped to 11th this year. * MORE AFFORDABLE — A few cities in our top 10 are more affordable this year than they were last year. Gulfport, Mississippi; Port Arthur, Texas and Ocean Springs, Mississippi all have lower median home values than last year. 1. GULFPORT, MISSISSIPPI For the third consecutive year Gulfport is the most affordable beach town in America. If you are thinking about buying a house here, you will need to afford a home worth $116,200. That's not bad when you consider having access to great weather year-round! If you are thinking about retiring, Gulfport could be a good place to settle. Mississippi ranks as one of the best states for an early retirement. 2. PENSACOLA, FLORIDA Pensacola continues to fall just short. For the third year in a row, the city in Florida takes the second spot. The median home here is worth $145,700 and costs $850 per month. For each of those metrics Pensacola ranks in the top 20. If you want a little more space for your beach home Pensacola might be a better place than Gulfport. Pensacola homes have an average of 6.4 rooms per home, slightly more than Gulfport homes' 6.1 rooms. 3. BILOXI, MISSISSIPPI There is no change amongst our top 3. For another year, Biloxi is the third-most affordable beach town in our data set. The median housing cost in Biloxi is actually lower than the two cities above it. The median home in Biloxi costs about $785 per month. However, getting your hands on a home here is slightly more difficult than it is in some other cities. The median home here is worth $149,100, the third-highest in the top 10. 4. PORT ARTHUR, TEXAS If you're looking for an affordable beach home, it's hard to beat our fourth-ranked city, Port Arthur, Texas. The median home is worth $64,300, meaning a mortgage here should be affordable. Long term however, Port Arthur comes with costs you will need to be aware of. Specifically the property taxes here are high, especially compared to home values. The median homeowner here pays around $1,000 per year in property taxes. 5. BAY ST. LOUIS, MISSISSIPPI Bay St. Louis is the first city in the top 10 to move up or down. The city moved up from ninth last year to fifth this year. The housing costs in Bay St. Louis are a standout metric. The average homeowner pays $729 per month, or $8,749 per year. To afford that and not be considered housing cost-burdened you would need to make $29,160 per year. If you are in the market for a big home, you may need to spend a little extra time house hunting in this city. The median home has less than six rooms, a relatively poor score in this study. 6. OCEAN SPRINGS, MISSISSIPPI Homes in Ocean Springs are pretty affordable. The median home is valued at $151,500, according to Census Bureau data and median monthly housing costs are $920. Property taxes, while low nationally, are relatively high for this top 10. The average homeowner pays almost $1,300 per year in property taxes, the highest mark in our top 10. 7. FREEPORT, TEXAS For people looking for a bargain, it's tough to beat Freeport. The median home can be had for only $71,000. The average homeowner in the area spends $565 per month on their home. Those are the sort of numbers that make shivering New Yorkers weep! Homes here to tend to run on the small side, however, which hurts the city's overall score. The median Freeport home has 5.6 rooms, 163rd-most in our study. 8. DAYTONA BEACH, FLORIDA Daytona Beach is probably better known as a place to hang out during spring break or as a place to catch a NASCAR race. But this is also a great city for thrifty home hunters on the prowl for a place to spend their winter months. The average home is worth about $117,000, a top 10 rate but $5,000 more than last year. Low home value typically means your most important housing costs, your mortgage, will be low. Daytona Beach has a median housing cost of $757, fourth-lowest in the top 10. It may be possible to get that number even lower if you have great credit and have access to the lowest mortgage rates. 9. FORT PIERCE, FLORIDA Fort Pierce, Florida missed on the eighth spot by only 0.4 points on our index. This could make it tough choice, between buying a beach home in Fort Pierce or buying a beach home in Daytona Beach. The two cities do have some important differences. The median home in Fort Pierce is worth a bit less than the median home in Daytona Beach but the homes are also smaller. The average Fort Pierce home is worth $89,000, which ranks third but only 5.4 rooms (it ranks 184th for that metric). 10. MELBOURNE, FLORIDA Our study ends in Melbourne, Florida a newcomer to this top 10. Homes in this city do well in all of our affordability metrics. Home value in particular stands out. You probably won't make a killing investing in homes around Melbourne, Florida but you will certainly have a place to hang out in the winter. The median home here is worth $125,400. That's $9,000 more than last year. The typical homeowner in the area spends about $850 per month on their house. DATA AND METHODOLOGY In order to find the most affordable beach towns in the country, SmartAsset looked at data for 229 beach towns. Specifically we looked at the following four factors: * HOME VALUE. This is the median home value in each city. Data comes from the Census Bureau's 2016 5-Year American Community Survey. * NUMBER OF ROOMS. This is the average number of rooms per house. Data comes from the Census Bureau's 2016 5-Year American Community Survey. * PROPERTY TAXES. This is the median property taxes paid. Data comes from the Census Bureau's 2016 5-Year American Community Survey. * MONTHLY HOUSING COSTS. This is the median monthly housing costs. Data comes from the Census Bureau's 2016 5-Year American Community Survey. We ranked each city in each metric. Then we found each city's average ranking, giving the number of rooms a half weighting and all other factors a full weighting. Using this average ranking, we created our final score. The city with the best average ranking received a 100. The city with the worst average ranking received a 0. NOW WATCH: How the ancient Greeks proved Earth was round over 2,000 years ago

TD Ameritrade CEO: The bitcoin market is 'certainly not mature' (AMTD)

[TD AMERITRADE CEO TIM HOCKEY] * BUSINESS INSIDER RECENTLY INTERVIEWED THE CEO OF TD AMERITRADE, ONE OF THE LARGEST ONLINE BROKERAGES, TO TALK STOCKS, CRYPTOCURRENCIES, AND MILLENNIALS. * HE SAYS THE BITCOIN MARKET IS FAR FROM MATURE, AND THAT THE INTEREST IN CRYPTOCURRENCIES AND RELATED STOCKS WAS CORRELATED WITH BITCOIN’S PRICE. ------------------------- The bitcoin and cryptocurrency craze has taken Wall Street by storm, and retail investors on online brokerage TD Ameritrade are no exception. In an interview with Business Insider, Tim Hockey, CEO of the $1.2 trillion online brokerage giant, explained why he and his firm were cautious about cryptocurrencies, despite intense interest from seemingly every type of investor. Hockey explained TD Ameritrade's approach to the recently launched Cboe bitcoin futures market. "We just turned on the Cboe product in a very limited release — just to futures clients that were more sophisticated and understood the risk they were taking — and we'll expand that over time," he said. "This market is certainly not mature. I would say that what we saw in terms of levels of absolute interest prior to the holiday season seemed to peak. Everybody was talking about crypto of all types all the time because it seemed like it was a one-way increase." Hockey said the frenzy was roughly correlated with bitcoin’s price, which has seen extreme volatility in the past year. When bitcoin finally saw a correction last week, trading volumes declined on TD Ameritrade. "Ever since the pricing has been normalized and there's been a bit of a correction, then you've seen a little bit less froth, if you will, in the market," he said. "We've actually seen that in the first few weeks of January, crypto trades — not just the Cboe product, but companies that are related to blockchain — have contributed a couple of points less toward our trading activity. It seems to have peaked just before the holidays." Like many other executives on Wall Street, Hockey was careful to draw a distinction between cryptocurrencies, like bitcoin, ethereum, and hundreds of others, and blockchain, the distributed ledger technology that powers cryptocurrencies and could have applications in nearly every industry. "There's a distinction between blockchain and cryptocurrencies, but they are absolutely being conflated in many people's minds," Hockey said. "The technology certainly has not matured, and I believe the transformative nature of what blockchain can do is only just starting to be understood by the majority of the world." Millennials are loading up on Intel stock ahead of earnings (INTC)

[intel ces lights millennial tunnel] * INTEL IS SET TO REPORT FOURTH-QUARTER EARNINGS AFTER THE BELL ON THURSDAY. * MILLENNIALS ARE BUYING SHARES 10 TIMES MORE OFTEN THAN THEY ARE SELLING THEM, ACCORDING TO THE STOCKPILE TRADING APP. * WATCH HOW THE STOCK IS MOVING IN REAL TIME HERE. ------------------------- Intel is set to report earnings after the bell on Thursday, and millennials are loading up on shares ahead of the report. According to data from Stockpile, an app that allows trading of fractional stock shares, young investors on the app are buying Intel stock 10 times more often then they are selling. The company is currently the 46th most popular among millennials on the Stockpile app. This is a surprisingly strong stance, given Wall Street's lukewarm feelings toward the stock recently. About 56% of the analysts surveyed by Bloomberg are bullish on the stock, while the other 43% are neutral or bearish. Wall Street is perhaps more hesitant because of the uncertainty around recent security flaws that affect Intel chips. The company has been working to fix a decade's worth of security issues with its processors, dubbed Spectre and Meltdown. The recently disclosed security issues allow bad actors to exploit the way modern CPUs work to find sensitive information they wouldn't normally have access to. All the major CPU makers are affected by the flaws, but Intel has been hit the hardest. When news of the flaws initially broke, investors flocked to Intel's rival, AMD, sending shares of the company up 16.29% this year. It's a stark contrast to Intel's shares which have slipped about 4%. Ahead of the company's fourth-quarter earnings report, set to be released after the bell on Thursday, Wall Street is expecting adjusted earnings of $0.87 per share on revenue of $16.347 billion, according to data from Bloomberg. Investors will likely be watching for comments on how the Spectre and Meltdown patches are coming along, and for more clarity about the flaws' impact on the company's business. Some analysts think it will likely impact the first quarter of 2018, but only because major chip buyers will delay their purchases until more clarity is found. Americans are about to see tax cuts in their paychecks - here's what they're likely to do with the extra cash

[vacation home] * TAX CUTS COULD INCREASE AMERICANS' PAYCHECKS BY FEBRUARY.  * ACCORDING TO UBS, THE EXTRA CASH IS MOST LIKELY TO BE SPENT ON VACATION HOMES, RETIREMENT PLANS, CONCERTS, AND TRAVEL.  * SPENDING ON RENT COULD FALL AS MORE RENTERS LOOK TO BUY, UBS SAID.  ------------------------- Starting in February, many Americans should see a bump in their paychecks, thanks to the recently passed Republican tax cuts.  They're most likely to spend the extra cash on hotels, funding their retirement plans, concerts, and sports games, according to UBS' equity strategy team.  "The benefit to the consumer is larger and sooner than we expected," Keith Parker, the chief US equity strategist at UBS, said in a note on Thursday. Parker estimated that people would see a 2-4% increase in take-home pay by next month, based on the IRS' guidance on how much taxes employers should withhold from paychecks by mid-February. By their estimates, the increases would range from $128 for an unmarried person earning $50,000 a year to $270 for someone earning $250,000 a year. To assess what people may spend that extra cash on, Parker's team drew on the Bureau of Labor Statistics' biannual Consumer Expenditure Surveys that gather data on how households at different income levels spend their money. Also, they assumed that the tax cuts would encourage some consumers to want to bump up their spending habits: [Screen Shot 2018 01 25 at 12.20.34 PM] "Other lodging," which leads the chart, includes hotels, vacation homes, and any other housing that's outside the city a person normally lives in. Spending on public/other transportation, including airlines, is also expected to rise, if Americans are really going to spend more on holidays. Spending on alcohol is high up on the list, too.  "Interestingly, rental income should decline as more renters look to buy," UBS said.   That's interesting, because changes to state and local taxes are expected to weaken the tax incentives for buying a home, particularly in expensive housing markets.  "That said, the impact from this won't be felt until 2019 when consumers will actually file the taxes," Parker said. "While it's possible that those who pay estimated taxes could be affected, this is likely a small percentage of the overall population."
