Greek Communist Party Anti-Austerity Rally a Success
The protest rally of the Greek Communist Party labor organization PAME was deemed a success as the organizers claim that an estimated 20,000 people filled Syntagma Square in Athens, Greece, on Saturday noon. The organizers said that demonstrators wanted to send the message that “workers and the unemployed refuse to live on bread crumbs, and that they are determined to claim their rights and fight, as they prepare for the general, nationwide strike on November 27.” PAME demands a 751-euro minimum monthly salary, 600 euros unemployment benefit, the return of Christmas, Easter and summer bonuses, and the abolition of the single property tax (ENFIA) as well as other extra taxes that eat up family the income. Greek Communist Party (KKE) leader Dimitris Koutsoumbas said in his address to the crowd gathered at Syntagma Square that “resistance, struggle and popular alliance is the solution for stable and permanent jobs for all, as well as the elimination of tax-robbery and recovery of the recent years’ losses”. He called people to “turn their backs to those who allegedly promise new governmental solutions and to the new messiahs who will send Greece to a new antisocial downhill.” Koutsoumbas noted that they will meet again on November 27 at the nationwide strike and called for “the organization of the working classes’ struggle in order to open the way for the people’s interest and the country’s future.” The rally ended peacefully. Police forces had a discreet presence and the Syntagma Square subway station remained open throughout the rally.

Mid-Season Sales Start Amid Mixed Reactions
The 10-day mid-season autumn sales period started on Saturday, November 1, amid mixed reactions. The Greek Federation of Private Employees has called a nationwide strike on Sunday, November 2, against the opening of stores on Sundays. On Monday, Deputy Development Minister Gerasimos Giakoumatos is expected to announce changes to the rules on sales and discounts. Meanwhile, according to a survey conducted by the National Confederation of Hellenic Commerce (ESEE) on businesses’ shutdown in Greece, scheduled for release next week, the retail sector situation is still stagnant. In a statement, ESEE President Vassilis Korkidis expressed his surprise over the Hellenic Federation of Enterprises (SEV) and the Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises (SETE) decision to appeal to the Council of State regarding the opening of the stores on Sundays and called on them to withdraw their motion. The sales will last 10 calendar days, not business days, which means that they will end on Saturday, November 9, since stores are regularly closed on Sundays. According to ESEE and the new rules, nationwide sales will be allowed four times a year. a) Regular sales: from the second Monday of January until the end of February and from the second Monday of July until the end of August. b) Mid-season sales: the first 10 days of May and the first 10 days of November. Retail stores can have sales and special offers any time they wish. However, they are not allowed to advertise sales in any manner. During regular sales periods, it is allowed to have price and percentage of savings before and after the sale on the price tag. Outside regular sales periods, it is not allowed to have percentages of savings written on the price tag.

State Debtors Increase by 851,000
Greek state debtors will soon reach 4.5 million, according to an official report. In the last month alone, 851,201 more Greeks were added to the list of those who owe money to the tax office. Recent figures showed that 3.3 million Greeks have outstanding tax debts while more than a million have outstanding debts to insurance funds, making a total debt of 90 billion euros. Over 850,000 taxpayers chose not to pay their taxes in September in anticipation of the new government-announced debt settlement programs. The new state debtors expect to enter the 100-tranche plan with a minimum payment of 50 euros. This is expected to have an impact on state revenue in the coming months. Greece’s Finance Ministry is alarmed watching the number of debtors soaring by 35% in September, reaching 3,303,110 taxpayers. The total amount of debts to tax authorities and customs came to 68.4 billion euros, 51.77 of which were created up to December 2012 and the remaining 16.67 billion ranged from January 1, 2013, to September 30, 2014. Ministry data also showed that just 187,000 debtors took advantage of the previous two government-proposed debt settlement programs. Now, the Greek Finance Ministry rushes to have the new debt settlement plan ready in the TAXIS electronic system by November 10 so that taxpayers can start making payments. The public revenue office expects to draw 400 million euros from debtors by the end of the year. Finance Ministry officials promised that the debt settlement program’s electronic system will be easy to use and calculates the best possible number of tranches and the amount due each month.

Greeks Will Pay More Than €37 Million for the New iPhone
The new iPhone is available in Greece as of October 31 and demand exceeded supply by far. According to electronics retailers, pre-orders from last week only, were far more than the initial available supplies. Although there were no lines or camp-outs upon their arrival, like it happened in other countries, Greeks seem very eager to acquire the new iPhone models. The first batch arrived was 10,000 units and was supposed to cover initial orders by mobile phone service providers and retailers. Industry sources said that pre-orders reached 50,000 units of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. This means that the new Apple best seller is in limited supply in Greece at the moment. The total cost is estimated at 37 million euros, and despite the economic crisis, many Greeks rushed to electronics stores and mobile phone service providers’ outlets to see, test or buy the new Apple smart phone. According to industry sources, the biggest part of the initial arrivals in Greece is the iPhone 6 (with the 4.7 inch screen) and 20% is the iPhone 6 Plus (with the 5.5 inch screen). Also, the majority of the batch is the 16 GB capacity, while the largest demand is for the 64 GB units. Prices start at 739 euros for the iPhone 6 with 16 GB and at 859 euros for the iPhone 6 Plus with 16 GB. Both models are available at silver, grey and gold. Retailers estimate that initial quantities will run out during the weekend, since stores will be open this Sunday. However, they promise that new batches will arrive next week. Also, as of October 29, the new iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 are available in Greece.

House of Greek National Poet Kostis Palamas Sold
The Patras house where Greek national poet Kostis Palamas was born, is sold to a Greek businessman who lives and works in the USA. The 75-year-old man, who also hails from Patras, is planning to turn the house into a museum. According to patratora.gr, the contract states that the house is bought by US resident Athanasios Stefanopoulos and will be transformed to “Olympism, Arts and Letters Museum,” which will be given to the Patras Artists Association. Before its transformation into a museum, the house will be restored and renovated under the Culture Ministry’s supervision. President of Patras Αrtists Association Theodoros Mallias made an announcement, stating that “the soul of our great national poet Kostis Palamas will be reborn in the home he loved so much. Inside the Olympism, Letters and Arts Museum, the people of Patras and visitors across the world will relive the sacred gift our poet gave to mankind. The timeless, prophetic and universal Olympic Anthem, a priceless legacy.” Palamas (1859-1943) was a central figure of the Greek literary generation of the 1880s and one of the co-founders of the New Athenian School of literature. He wrote his first collection of poems, “Songs of Our Fatherland”, in 1886. In 1896, he wrote the words to the Olympic Hymn, composed by Spyridon Samaras, for the first modern Olympic Games held in Athens, Greece. From then on, he was informally called Greece’s “national poet.” In 1958, his Olympic Hymn was declared the official Olympic Anthem. He was twice nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature but never received it.

Hydrocarbons in Gulf of Patras Evaluated at 14 Bln Euros
Hydrocarbon exploitation at the Gulf of Patras will create a thousand of new working positions, boost Western Greece’s local economy and is valued at 14 billion euros, said today Greek Environment, Energy and Climate Change Minister Giannis Maniatis. According to the Minister, exploitation will begin within the next year and is estimated to create some 1,000 direct and indirect jobs, while the regional economy’s annual revenue will be between 110 and 150 million euros. Commenting on the drilling procedures, Maniatis said that the government was very cautious in order to have fully transparent competitions and deals. Furthermore, the Minister underlined that the environment’s protection remains the country’s number one priority, emphasizing that the tightest conditions on an international level have been taken into account. Maniatis noted that hydrocarbon exploitation and its beneficial effects in the economy must not become a danger for the tourism industry, the local society, the aquaculture and the nearby protected areas. Finally, Maniatis revealed that a new round of concessions has just begun for similar actions to be taken in other regions such as Arta, Aetoloakarnania and Achaia. Italian company “Edison” has already showed interest in being part of the explorations. Earlier this month, the Greek Minister met with company representatives in Milan.

11 Charts That Show Exactly What's Wrong With The US Healthcare System
The United States spends more on healthcare than any other developed nation. Having a baby here costs more than it would in any other country. Yet Americans lead far shorter lives than residents of other developed countries. American infants have a lower chance of surviving past infancy than those born in eight other affluent nations. What explains these striking incongruities? Here are 11 charts that might help. 1. Americans don’t live as long as we should. In terms of overall life expectancy, the United States ranks 26th out of 34 Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development member countries. Americans enjoy fewer years than Slovenians and Koreans, living just a tad longer than Czechs and Chileans, who used to rank far behind us. 2. The US spends the most on healthcare and drugs of any developed country. Nearly a fifth of America’s gross domestic product goes toward healthcare spending, putting us above the Netherlands, France, Germany, Canada and Switzerland, where actual health outcomes are much better. 3. Americans are still dying from treatable disease. Americans are more likely to die from asthma than people than in Brazil or Costa Rica, even though the disease is equally prevalent in those countries. 4. Americans with those diseases are more likely to end up in a hospital — and more likely to die once they are admitted. We send more adult asthma sufferers to the hospital to be treated than any other developed country, coming in just under the Slovakian Republic. The soaring cost of asthma medication in the US (a Qvar brand inhaler, for example, costs 18 times more in the US than it does in Greece) is partially to blame for this problem, but access to preventative care also plays a role. Uninsured asthma patients are far more likely to die in the hospital than those with insurance. 5. US life expectancy varies by skin color. In 2009, the average black American could expect to live to just 75, the same life expectancy white Americans enjoyed 30 years earlier in 1979. Today, Black Americans remain far more likely than white Americans to die from heart disease, cancer and diabetes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 6. It’s too easy for Americans to opt out of vaccinations, leading to new cases of preventable diseases. Low vaccination rates can lead to outbreaks of diseases like measles and Hepatitis B, especially among susceptible populations such as the young and the elderly. A handful of wealthy southern California schools have lower vaccination rates than South Sudan — a troubling trend that extends to New York City private schools as well. 7. Doctors in the US spend very little time with patients. In comparison to physicians in the Czech Republic, New Zealand, France and Israel, doctors in the US spend far less time consulting with patients and do a far worse job explaining to them what’s wrong. 8. Life-saving prescription drugs cost a fortune. The US spends a huge chunk of its budget on pharmaceutical drugs. Unlike other countries, whose governments regularly haggle with pharmaceutical companies to reduce drug prices, Medicare is forbidden from engaging in such negotiations. This is why a cancer drug like Gleevec, which costs about $1,000 in New Zealand and Canada, costs an average of $6,214 in the US. Even the common pain medication Celebrex, which runs for $51 in Canada, can cost anywhere from two to nine times that amount in the US. 9. Standard lab tests are far pricier, too. An MRI in the US, for example, can cost 10 times as much as it would in Switzerland. 10. American babies are the most expensive in the world. Giving birth in the US — including hospitalization and a normal delivery — costs an average of $10,002, nearly five times more than the cost of birth in Argentina or Spain. 11. Babies born in the US are far less likely to survive past infancy than babies born in many other developed countries. In 2004, the latest year that data are available for all countries, the US ranked 29th globally in infant mortality, with the same rate of infant death as Slovakia and Poland.
