Government too conscious of its image

Negotiations with Greece’s lenders may have picked up pace recently but an interim agreement does not seem feasible at this time. Therefore, the SYRIZA-led government will have to make some tough decisions until the next Eurogroup on May 11. It is hard to guess what Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will finally do but a compromise, even a politically painful one, is better than the alternative.

Work to Repair Damage at Looted Zominthos Dig to Begin on Monday

Greece’s culture ministry has announced that work will begin on Monday to restore damage caused by illegal digging carried out by looters at the Zominthos archaeological site, on Mount Psiloritis on Crete. According to experts, there are signs that the site was vandalized and disturbed. In an announcement issued on Sunday, the ministry reported damage in three of the 42 rooms uncovered by the official archaeological excavation. It said the illegal diggers had gone through the floor and destroyed a section of the southern wall of one room, that the base of a pillar found on the site had been moved and broken, while in rooms 35 and 26 there were signs of disturbance and illegal digging. The ministry’s deputy general secretary Maria Andreadaki-Vlazaki paid a visit to the site on Saturday and a decision was made with the head of the antiquities ephorate and the head of the dig to begin work to restore the damage immediately. 100 days of solitude: Syriza struggles as Greeks once again stare into the abyss

As Syriza nears its 100th day in office, Alexis Tsipras walks a fine line between eurozone compromise and being accused of submitting to Angela Merkel In the countdown to Syriza marking 100 days in office, Greece got its first crisis monument. Arms outstretched, mouth wide open, his face locked in despair, the sculpture depicts a man dangling from a financial index in free fall. Below, his world of concrete and stone lies broken and smashed.Officially known as the “crisis work”, the art piece has attracted a steady flow of spectators to the place where it has been erected, in the shadow of a bridge on the boulevard that connects Athens to the sea. Flowers lie next to it as if in mourning for all that has passed. Continue reading...

Santorini Volcano Returns to Dormant State

After three years of increased activity the volcano on the Greek island of Santorini has returned to its dormant state, according to the newspaper Kathimerini. Experts from the Institute of Geology and Mineral Exploration (IGME) spoke with the Greek newspaper after their annual inspection of the Santorini volcano, noting that the seismic activity and physicochemical parameters have returned to normal levels, while the changes to the volcano’s rim have stopped. Furthermore, they added that the repercussion of a possible eruption would not be as horrible as everyone believes. “We know that even if there was an eruption in 2011, it would be a perfectly manageable situation, similar to that of 1925-1926,” said Giorgos Vougiouklakis, a scientist at IGME. “Volcanoes always give you a warning. If the volcano is systematically monitored and the state is well-prepared, an eruption could even work as a magnet for tourists. This is the sort of situation we are talking about, so let’s not engage in scaremongering.” Santorini is the most active volcanic centre in the South Aegean Volcanic Arc, though what remains today is chiefly a water-filled caldera. The volcanic arc is approximately 500 km long and 20 to 40 km wide. The region first became volcanically active around 3–4 million years ago. The island is the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history: the Minoan eruption, which occurred some 3600 years ago at the height of the Minoan civilization. The eruption left a large caldera surrounded by volcanic ash deposits hundreds of meters deep and may have led indirectly to the collapse of the Minoan civilization on the island of Crete, through a gigantic tsunami. Another popular theory holds that the Minoan eruption is the source of the legend of Atlantis.

Panathinaikos Basketball Team Dismisses Coach Ivanovic

Panathinaikos announced the dismissal of Dusko Ivanovic, the basketball team’s coach through an official statement. The team’s poor performance against Olympiakos which Panathinaikos lost its advantage, as well as the team’s exclusion from the Euroleague Final 4 lead to the decision to dismiss Ivanovic. Sotiris Manolopoulos, a former coaching staff member will take over as a temporary coach, until the club can find a replacement. According to Eurohoops, former Greek basketball player Panagiotis Giannakis is being considered for the position. However, Panathinaikos’ representatives are denying the rumors and they stressed that no contact has been made between the two parties. “Panathinaikos announces the termination of its cooperation with Dusko Ivanovic and thanks him for his contribution to the team. The coaching responsibility will fall to Sotiris Manolopoulos until a replacement for Ivanovic can be found,” noted the official announcement.

May 3: International Eat a Pitogyro Day

This year a different kind of event was organized in Greece. An event with no distinctions between gender, religion or nationality, with no relation to religious holidays. An event that was created to commemorate the great discovery of pitogyro, a Greek food that includes pita, gyro, tzatziki and condiments. The International Eat a Pitogyro Day was established by Thessalonians through Facebook, with thousands declaring their intention of participating in the “celebration.” As of 2015, the International Eat a Pitogyro Day — the name of the Facebook group that promoted it — will be celebrated on May 3. “This event has been created to honor the great discovery of pitogyro. Eat gyro, because YOLO (You Only Live Once),” noted the event organizers on their Facebook page. However, they did not forget about their crisis and jokingly added that there would be no free food. It’s a BYOP event – Bring Your Own Pitogyro. After the event success in Thessaloniki, people in Patras have announced that they will also be taking part in this celebration to honor their favorite Greek food. The announcement and organization of International Eat a Pitogyro Day shows that even during difficult times, Greeks never lose their sense of humor.
