Clooney’s Monuments Men Want Parthenon Marbles Back In Greece
Actor-director-activist George Clooney, who has taken on worldwide causes such as the Sudan tragedy, now has unwittingly stepped into an age-old fight between Greece and England over the stolen Parthenon Marbles being housed in the British Museum. He said they should likely be returned to Greece, which six years ago opened a new Acropolis Museum to house the treasures stolen almost 200 years ago by a British diplomat, Lord Elgin. The friezes had been called The Elgin Marbles before the late actress and Greek Culture Minister Melina Mercouri, who was at the head of the fight for their return, called them The Parthenon Marbles, joining others in the renaming call. And he’s being backed by his co-stars in the WWII movie The Monuments Men, about a group led by American and British art experts behind enemy lines trying to save some of the world’s most valuable heritage art goods from destruction by the Nazis. At a press conference in London Fen. 11, Clooney called for “an open discussion” on the fate of the ancient friezes. Both the Vatican and the J. Paul Getty Museum had sent parts back, Clooney said, raising the question “of whether or not one piece of art should be, as best as possible, put back together.” “There are certain pieces that you look at and think, that actually is probably the right thing to do,” Clooney said, the Associated Press reported. Greek Culture Minister Panos Panagiotopoulos thanked Clooney for his support, calling him “an active citizen and creative artist who adamantly defends what is just and good.” The British Museum, which houses the marbles, says they “are a part of the world’s shared heritage and transcend political boundaries” and are best displayed in London, where the public can view them for free. Clooney, who directed and stars in The Monuments Men, said he didn’t mean to rekindle the ancient fight when he answered a question from a Greek journalist about the marbles at the Berlin Film Festival last week. And he said he’d been told that, as an American, he couldn’t understand the issues. “That can’t always be the British default setting,” co-star Matt Damon told British reporters, half-joking. “That’s not actually an argument, to say ‘Well you’re American.’” Bill Murray, another star of the movie, had a firmer opinion on the ancient artwork. “It’s had a very nice stay here, certainly,” Murray said. “But London’s gotten crowded. There’s plenty of room back there in Greece.”

Trikala: Buses without Drivers
The city of Trikala, northwestern Thessaly, Greece, was selected along with five European cities for the implementation of the European pilot project for automated road transport systems, CityMobil2. Automated transport systems are made up of vehicles operating without a driver in collective mode. The project CityMobil2 officially started on September 1, 2009 and will last 4 years. It has 45 partners drawn from system suppliers, city authorities, the research community and networking organizations. The Greek city of Trikala and the other five European cities elected will carry out six-month tests with automated vehicles. Due to the difficulty of the project the Development Company of Trikala Municipality, e-Trikala will collaborate with the Institute of Communications and Computers Systems of the National Technical University. According to CityMobil2 official website, Trikala was the first digital city in Greece. The city’s IT activity started in 2002, when the idea for searching technological ways of servicing the citizens was born. In 2003, the municipality of Trikala recruited employees in order to form the Development Company e-Trikala, which took action on new broadband technologies over the next 5 years. This led to the nomination of Trikala as one of the 21 most intelligent cities in the world by the Intelligent Community Forum for three consecutive years (2009, 2010, 2011).

Because his name was long and difficult for the locals they were calling him Kozi and that’s why he chose that name for his successful restaurant in the Melissia suburb of Athens. It also started as a steakhouse but its success is due to its burger. The house specialties are Kozi’s burger, a beef burger stuffed with mozzarella, tomato, mayonnaise, onion and ketchup seasoned with South African spices, and the Mala Mala burger, a chicken burger with bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion, mayonnaise and homemade honey mustard sauce.

4.5 Richter Earthquake in Cephalonia
The Geodynamic Institute of Athens, Greece has reported that a 4.5 magnitude earthquake was documented at around 12.34 today, about 12 kilometers west of Argostoli and at a depth of 5 kilometers. The latest earthquake was felt in Lixouri and surrounding villages. However, according to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the earthquake was of 4.7 Richter and its epicenter was 17 km northwest of Argostoli.

SYRIZA Leads 1.5 pct Over ND

New Dismissals in Public Sector
The Greek government has announced that it will proceed with new dismissals in the public sector since Greece will have to reduce its civil servants by 11,000. The Minister of Administrative Reform, Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced that about 48,910 civil servants suspected of having been hired illegally presenting counterfeit documents since 2000, are facing the risk of dismissal. Many of them work for Greek Ministry of Culture and the Fire Department. Meanwhile, the Greek Ministries continue the listing of their staff in order to detect offenses and compile dismissals lists. According to the memorandum, the Greek government should be announcing the first wave of dismissals in May, 2014. Moreover, troika has suggested dismissals in municipalities and municipal companies. Kyriakos Mitsotakis has stated that the government is trying to put an end to impunity in the public sector. He has pointed out that the public sector was dominated by a code of silence protecting civil servants from facing disciplinary action, but things have changed and inspections have increased.

Woody Allen Denies Sexual Abuse Claims In Revealing '60 Minutes' From 1992
Woody Allen's recent New York Times essay isn't the first time he's publicly gone on the record to deny daughter Dylan Farrow's allegations of sexual abuse.
In 1992, at the height of the initial media storm over the matter, the usually reclusive Allen sat down with "60 Minutes" in his Manhattan apartment to discuss the situation no holds barred.
We re-watched the interview and Allen had some interesting (and one-sided) statements:
"A gigantic industry has been built on a total non-event ... it wasn't as if I tickled my daughter or something and it was exaggerated, I'm saying nothing happened at all ... a multi-million dollar industry has sprouted up over a non-event." "Isn't it illogical that at the height of a very bitter custody fight I would drive up to Connecticut ... and pick this moment to be a child molester? If I wanted to be a child molester I had many opportunities in the past. I could have quietly made a custody settlement with Mia and done it in the future. It's so insane!" "Several weeks before it happened Mia called me on the phone and said, in the course of an argumentative phone call, that 'I have something very nasty planned for you.' " "On many occasions over the phone and in person, Mia said to me, 'You took my daughter and I'm going to take yours.' She meant by it that I had formed a relationship with her 21-year-old daughter and she was going to get my daughter, Dylan." "Mia wrote a glowing, glowing letter saying that I was a loving and attentive father and that my adopting Dylan would be of great benefit to her. This was her sworn affidavit." [It was written a month before Mia found out about Allen and Soon Yi]. "She [Mia] accused me of child molestation on August 4th and the week after she's fully saying 'When do we begin our new movie?' She made an appointment for a costume fitting ... I told my lawyer to end her contract and we hired a new actress [Diane Keaton]." "She [Mia] threatened to have me killed and to kill me ... she became obsessed with Greek tragedy and felt that poking my eyes out would be a fitting vengeance." "She gave me a Valentine's Day card and I opened it up and there was a very, very chilling Valentine meticulously worked on with a photo of teh family and through everyone had pins and steak knives. "Mia may believe it [Dylan's allegations] and want to believe it, she may have convinced herself of it, or she may not believe it. Global Anti-Semitism and the Erosion of Shame
Some of my worst fears about a resurgence of anti-Semitism around the world seem to be coming true. I have been talking for some time about the unique dynamic of anti-Semitism as a phenomenon and the changing world environment, which together are likely to cause a resurgence of anti-Semitism going forward.
Anti-Semitism has characteristics like other forms of bigotry in terms of stereotyping, alienation from the other, and discrimination.
But what makes it different, and which goes a long way to explain anomalous things about anti-Semitism -- how long it has lasted, how it pops up in different places, the concept of anti-Semitism without Jews, the contradictory accusations against Jews, etc. -- is the core of the anti-Semitic idea: that Jews are not what they seem to be. The real Jew, according to the anti-Semite, is a hidden conspiratorialist, all-powerful and evil.
So any time there is a crisis in society, the Jew can be seized upon and blamed as the secret cause of society's suffering. And, of course, over the last decade the world has experienced a series of crises.
Islamic terror beginning with 9/11, the financial collapse of 2008, the multitude of economic and social crises in Europe and the Arab Spring's expectations and disappointments top the list. All these anxiety-provoking developments contributed to the growth of anti-Semitism.
But other factors play a role and are increasingly worrisome. There is the erosion of shame about anti-Semitism as the Holocaust becomes more remote in time and as survivors pass away. The too-easy analogizing of every bad thing that happens today to the Holocaust, which the Anti-Defamation League condemns whenever it surfaces, is just one manifestation of the loss of impact on attitudes that the Holocaust formerly had.
Pictures of Auschwitz after the war did not lead to the disappearance of anti-Semitism. They did, however, constrain manifestations of Jew hatred. That loss of embarrassment over time reduces those constraints.
Additionally, the ongoing critique of the state of Israel is a powerful corrosive factor. Not every criticism of Israel is illegitimate, and surely not anti-Semitic. But when condemnations of the Jewish state are so clearly biased, when Israel is singled out for punitive treatment, even when some of those engaging in these activities may not be motivated by anti-Semitism, it opens up the Pandora's Box of Jew hatred and makes it much more acceptable. We see this in the boycott and delegitimization movements against Israel, which lead to anti-Jewish activities, like isolating Jewish students on campus.
Finally, there is the perceived weakening of the U.S.'s role in the world. However true it is or is not, the perception alone is worrying because the long-time recognition of U.S. leadership in the world for 60 years has been a major element in the struggle against anti-Semitism.
What are some of the most dangerous elements of the resurgence of global anti-Semitism?The entry of anti-Semitic parties into parliamentary bodies in Europe. Such parties have existed since the war but without the legitimacy they have now gained through electoral support. I refer first to Golden Dawn in Greece, the closest thing to a Nazi-fascist party of the '30s, which has 12 seats in parliament; the Jobbik party in Hungary, which has accumulated significant support; and a Ukrainian nationalist party that blames Jews for the nation's problems.The physical and verbal threats against Jews that surface periodically in certain Western European countries. Examples are the terrorist attack in Toulouse; the violence against Jews and Jewish institutions in the UK and France during the last Gaza war; and the isolation of Jews in Malmo, Sweden propelled by anti-Israel activists.The growing effort to delegitimize the state of Israel through boycotts and divestment campaigns by well-known cultural and scientific figures or by religious, business, or union institutions will inevitably lead to a deterioration of the Jewish condition in many countries. Here I cite the findings of ADL polls in Europe over the years, which indicate that a majority of Europeans believe that their Jewish citizens are more loyal to the state of Israel than to their own countries. So when Israel is deemed bad, so too often are the Jews.In a Muslim world of schisms, civil wars, fanatical conflict between Sunnis and Shiites, the one thing they seem to agree on is that the most effective way to demonize ones foe is to label him a Zionist or a Jew. So while there is much discussion that Israel and Saudi Arabia may now have common interests in their opposition to Iran, the image of the Jew as the source of all evil remains potent as a motivating force in too much of the Islamic world.Increasing manifestation of anti-Semitism in the sports and cultural fields. The controversy over the French comedian Dieudonne and his use of a Nazi-like gesture and the appearance of anti-Jewish cheers at soccer matches are but two examples.The sustainability of conspiracy theories about Jews, whether it is denial of the Holocaust, or blaming Jews for the financial crisis.Even in America, the shocking story of the New York town of Pine Bush reminds us not to be complacent. The depths of the story are still to be plumbed, but it appears to be a case of systemic anti-Semitism in which school officials may not have responded effectively. The U.S. attorney for the Southern district recently submitted a significant brief contending that the efforts of officials in the face of continuing anti-Semitic activity in Pine Bush were not sufficient.
We take this resurgence very seriously. The message of "Never Again," which has resonated in the post-war years speaks to the need for the American Jewish community, and particularly the Anti-Defamation League, to be there for Jews everywhere facing anti-Semitism.

‘Group of Popular Rebels’ Claims Attack Against German Ambassador
The “Group of Popular Rebels” (Omada Laikon Agoniston – OLA) published a proclamation in the Greek newspaper “Pontiki” claiming responsibility for the attack against the German ambassador to Greece, which occurred early morning on December 30, 2013 in Athens. Their proclamation was 20 pages long and around 12,000 words. It had been edited by the newspaper’s staff, who added titles, “mottos” and made some alterations to the text. According to Greek news, the proclamation was found after a phone call that was made to the newspaper telling the staff to look for the documents behind a certain OTE primary cross-connection point, inside a purple bag in the area of Exarcheia in Athens, Greece. In their proclamation, the group of rebels make references to the “occupational government of Tsolakoglou,” to a “revolutionary project” and “total rupture.” Meanwhile, they express their fear for the euro being used as a “screening tool” and the fact that it appears to be a“Trojan Horse” of German Imperialism in Europe.

New Democracy Rift For Athens Mayor
The ruling New Democracy Conservatives of Prime Minister Antonis Samaras will back one of its Members of Parliament, Aris Spiliotopoulos as its candidate for Athens Mayor, creating an instant battle as another of the party’s lawmakers and a former holder of the office, Nikitas Kaklamanis, said he wants the job back and will run against his own party’s choice. Spiliotopoulos, 47, a former minister of both tourism and education and religious affairs, said he had Samaras’ backing, raising the prospect of how the Premier will deal with Kaklamanis, who said he would create an independent local political group to try to topple the man who beat him, George Kaminis, who is an Independent. Samaras’ coalition, which also includes the PASOK Socialists, has only a three-vote majority in the Parliament during a tender time when it is being pressed by international lenders to speed the pace of reforms and close a 2.4 billion-euro hole in the 2014 budget and he would be hard-pressed to reprimand or eject Kaklamanis, who said he would soon announce his platform. Kaklamanis, 67, then would be in the position of being both a member of New Democracy and a separate political group cutting into the base of the party and Spiliotopoulos, draining away votes. Kaklamanis said, “My love for Athens was not opportunist. For me it was, is and will always be Athens First.” In statements, Spiliotopoulos said he would be rising to “the invitation/challenge for a more beautiful Athens, an Athens whose residents and visitors will feel safety, an Athens capable of fueling the creative forces of us all. For an Athens that we love and want to earn the place that it deserves.” Sources told the Athens News Agency that the Prime Minister’s office has already commissioned an opinion poll measuring Spiliotopoulos’ popularity with those of the other candidates that have announced their intention to run so far. These include Gavriil Sakellaridis for main opposition Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA), Nikos Sofianos from the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) and Ilias Kasidiaris from the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn (Chryssi Avgi) party.

33 British Couples to Tie the Knot in Cephalonia
Thirty three couples from Great Britain are going to tie the knot this summer in Cephalonia. According to Donna O’ Liri, social event organizer in Cephalonia, the 32 couples who will be getting married in the summer, didn’t change their wedding plans because of the earthquakes. In fact, the other day another couple asked her to organize their wedding for this coming July. “The earthquake is over and we are moving on. The sun is still shining,” said O’ Liri, who is also the representative of the British community of Cephalonia. Moreover, the British people of Cephalonia are trying not to be affected by the earthquake and the terrible conditions on the island by celebrating Valentine’s Day and the carnival with a lot of dancing and local wine. Cephalonia has about 1,000 permanent residents from Great Britain. Most of them came once for vacations, fell in love with the beautiful Greek island and decided to stay permanently. “We were aware of Cephalonia’s seismicity and now it doesn’t bother us. It’s really nice to wake up in the morning and be able to see the sea, the mountains, the nature,” added Mrs. O’ Liri. She also stressed that the British don’t fear the earthquakes. “Most of the buildings are quite sturdy and we feel safe in them.” O’ Liri highlighted as well that the Cephalonians have been really helpful and kind with the British affected by the earthquake. “Some of our houses have been declared unfit. The locals found us a place to stay until we restore the damages. They have been really helpful, kind and hospitable with the British community,” she concluded.

UNESCO Tribute to the Greek Island of Syros
UNESCO is organizing a seven-day tribute, this week, to the beauty and unique culture of the Greek island of Syros in Athens, Greece. The neoclassical building of the Hellenic ICOMOS headquarters, will host an event that will acquaint people with the island’s history. Syros is where the great Greek rebetiko musician Markos Vamvakaris was born as well as the place that inspired his famous song “Frankosyriani.” Guests will have the opportunity to explore the island through art pieces. Syros’ cosmopolitan aura will be displayed through a photography exhibition and various visual art projects, book reviews, traditional products tastings, traditional dances, music and video presentations. Street in Athens Among Top 10 Examples of Rapid Landscape Architecture
Landscape Architects Network is a website that examines the ways in which people are inspired by the surrounding urban scenery and transform the outdoor underused or misused spaces of their cities. In a recent article for the top 10 examples of landscape architecture that rapidly changed urban scenery, Landscape Architects Network placed Perikleous street, Athens, Greece in the fourth place. The Greek activist group, Atenistas transformed the abandoned street into a functional public space. After 11 hours of work they turned the street into a beautiful passage painting the dirty walls with beautiful colors using pallets and chairs as benches. “It is amazing what a bit of artwork can achieve, as shown in the colorful walls of this transformed site. It is even more amazing to see a bunch of normal everyday objects combined together to create a public bench that adds functionality as well as interest,” says the article. Atenistas is an open community of activists which organize initiatives aiming to improve Athens. They have organized several cultural events, activities for the support of underprivileged social groups and projects such as the creation of new open spaces and parks and the cleaning of polluted beaches along the city coast.

Italian Cultural Institute in Thessaloniki Shuts Down
The Italian government forced by the financial crisis that has hit the country, has decided to shut down the Italian Cultural Institute in Thessaloniki, Greece, after 51 years of operation. Yannis Boutaris the mayor of Thessaloniki described the closure of the institute as a “major loss” noting that this decision takes something away from Thessaloniki’s multicultural profile. Yannis Mylopoulos, the rector of Aristotle University stated that “Thessaloniki’s cultural scene has become poorer and the Aristotle University has lost a significant partner. It’s sad. The institute was a lively cultural hub in the city.” The Italian Cultural Institute was established in 1963, in the northern port of Thessaloniki. It helped bring together the Greek and Italian culture and offered a passport to the Greek students who wanted to study in Italy. In recent years, apart from Italian language courses, the institute organized cultural events, exhibitions, concerts, conferences in collaboration with Greek and Italian organizations. The Greek writer Thodoros Ioannidis, a close friend of Umberto Eco, was a student and professor at the institute. He reported that during the dictatorship in the 1970s, thousands of young people went there to learn the language so that they could study in Italy. Recently, before the Italian government announced its closure, the Italian institute hosted a ceremony where school certificates were awarded to the relatives of Jewish children who studied in Italian schools before they died in the Holocaust.

Vamos Village: A True Greek Success Story
It has been nearly 20 years since the residents of the Greek village Vamos in Crete made their first appearance in “Philoxenia,” the International Tourism Exhibition of Thessaloniki. Their presentation was limited to just a photo of a local tavern they had managed to make themselves. According to Nikos Frantzeskakis, president of the Greek Rural Tourism Unions Association (SEAGE), in 1995 when the residents decided to make their village known through the International Tourism Exhibition they were constantly being asked: “What are you selling here?” The villagers then answered: “We are selling our dream!” Much has changed for the village of Vamos and its residents since then. Their tenacity and passion helped take a major step in the field of rural tourism, not only in that specific region but also throughout Greece. Vamos is located only half an hour outside the popular tourist destination of Chania and has a spectacular view of the mountain range Lefka Ori. Today the village hosts 50 guestrooms, 15 of which are part of the rural tourism program. The area has come a long way since 1995 when it only had 20 visitors per year. Nowadays, Vamos welcomes at least 30,000 tourists per year. Nikos Frantzeskakis said: “Vamos has really grasped the meaning of rural Tourism. Our success comes from the fact that we love what we are doing and our decision to join forces and knowledge in order to make our village known to the world.”
