Photo Credit: Greek Reporter April 19 was an Orthodox Easter Sunday nobody will ever forget in Greece. As strict curfew measures remain in place across the country to limit the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, millions of Greeks tried to find new ways to celebrate the greatest feast of the year, while staying at home. From Evros to Crete and from Corfu to Castellorizo, Greece did not see its residents gathering in the countryside to set up their traditional ” souvla ” to bake their lamb or goat meat. Families celebrated alone in gardens, terraces or balconies. Photo credit: Greek Reporter Others sent their orders to souvlaki shops and other restaurants, which set their traditional ”souvla” outside of their shops to prepare the meat and then deliver it to families. However, there were no group gatherings, no celebrations in the streets, no shops open to welcome the thousands of those who want to celebrate this day. Instead, people used their home cook ovens or sent their trays of food to nearby bakeries or takeaway shops, which turned their stores into Easter Sunday cuisines, baking the Easter Sunday dinner for the people. People in villages kept the tradition alive by roasting their lamp in their gardens.
