Steven Wynn Is Suing Jim Chanos For Alleged Slander

The billionaire casino tycoon Steve Wynn just filed a lawsuit against hedge fund manager Jim Chanos, Reuters reports. Wynn's lawsuit accuses Chanos of slander "over an alleged statement that Wynn violated a US anti-bribery law." The suit alleges that on or about April 25, Chanos told guests at an invitation only event in Berkley, California that Wynn and his Las Vegas-based resorts had violated the federal Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. You can see video of the event here. Chanos starts speaking around 4:00 and again around 36:00. In his lawsuit, Wynn also adds that gaming regulators in Nevada and Massachusetts, the SEC, and other government agencies have "thoroughly investigated" both him and his resorts. An no one found and reliable evidence of a FCPA violation. Wynn is seeking unspecified compensatory and punitive damages.  Jim Chanos is a Wall Street stalwart, and founded his short-only firm Kynikos (Greek for 'cynic') back in 1980s. One of his more famous moves was shorting Enron, several months before its bankruptcy. He's recently been arguing that China's economy is overheated "due to its dependence on property development for growth." And on May 15, Chanos told CNBC that he would "no longer be long on the Macau casino."  Macau happens to be the only place in China where casinos are legal, and revenues have been down in June (by 3.7%), July (by 3.6%), and August (a far worse 6%).Join the conversation about this story »

Anti-jihadist coalition widens as strikes hit Syria oil assets

London (AFP) - The US-led coalition against the Islamic State group widened on Friday with Britain, Belgium and Denmark approving plans to join air strikes in Iraq. But Washington said up to 15,000 "moderate" rebels would be needed to beat back the jihadists in Syria, where the Pentagon said air raids had disrupted lucrative oil-pumping operations that have helped fund the militants. The White House welcomed the new countries recruited to the Iraq operation, who are expected to deploy a total of 19 fighter jets in the air campaign.Britain's House of Commons voted overwhelmingly by 524 lawmakers in favour and 43 against a motion authorising air strikes in Iraq.Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said there would be no "immediate military action" but that it would be a "long, drawn-out campaign"."We have to select our targets in accordance with the American and international effort that's going on in Iraq," Fallon told Sky News, also noting there had been "a lot of support" for military action in Syria during a sometimes heated parliamentary debate.Ahead of the vote, Prime Minister David Cameron told lawmakers IS must be confronted."This is not a threat on the far side of the world. Left unchecked, we will face a terrorist caliphate on the shores of the Mediterranean," Cameron said.Washington is eager to build the broadest possible coalition including Arab allies to tackle IS, which has captured large areas of Syria and Iraq and declared an Islamic "caliphate". - Oil trade shutdown -Britain, Belgium and Denmark should join warplanes from the United States, France, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Jordan that are already hitting IS targets. The Netherlands is also sending six F-16 jets and will provide 250 military personnel and 130 trainers for the Iraqi military, and Greece said it would send arms to Kurdish forces in Iraq.In recent days, Washington and its allies have targeted the funding sources of what US President Barack Obama has branded a "network of death".In the latest air strikes, US planes destroyed four tanks operated by militants in Syria as well as several vehicles and jihadist positions in Iraq, the Pentagon said. The US-led coalition also bombed oil refineries in east and northeast Syria where IS jihadists extract crude for sale on the black market, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based monitoring group.Experts say sales of oil from Syria and Iraq usually earn IS up to $3 million (2.4 million euros) a day.But now, according to activists in Deir Ezzor, pumping has stopped."Oil extraction has been halted because of the security situation," said Leith al-Deiri, who spoke to AFP via the Internet.Another activist from Deir Ezzor, Rayan al-Furati, confirmed the halt."There are no traders or clients going to the fields, (because they are) fearing the strikes," he said. - 'Ground component' -The US is also planning to train and arm 5,000 Syrian rebels as part of the effort, although the top US military officer, General Martin Dempsey, said a force of between 12,000 and 15,000 would be required "to recapture lost territory in eastern Syria".The general said defeating the IS group would take more than air power and that "a ground component" was an important aspect of the US-led campaign."We believe the path to develop that is the Syrian moderate opposition," he said.Britain and France have both for now ruled out launching strikes in Syria at the hub of the IS group's power, unlike the Arab allies taking part in the air campaign.London however said it would "reserve the right" to intervene in Syria in case of a "humanitarian catastrophe", for example in the case of an imminent massacre, without first consulting parliament.IS's brutal abuses against civilians, rival fighters and Arab and Western hostages, as well as its success in recruiting Western members, have caused international alarm.British police this week arrested 11 people suspected of links to Islamic extremists, including a notorious radical preacher who was released on Friday. In France, hundreds of people gathered in Paris answering a call by Muslim leaders to denounce the "barbarism" of Islamic State, as flags across France flew at half mast after the beheading of a French national by an IS-linked group in Algeria. The coalition strikes in Syria are reported to have killed at least 140 jihadists as well as 13 civilians. The Syrian Observatory on Friday reported that a senior IS jihadist had been killed with a targeted strike on the motorbike he was travelling in after leaving a military base in eastern Syria. The conflict that began in Syria in March 2011 as an uprising against President Bashar al-Assad's regime has spawned a massive refugee crisis, with more than three million Syrians now taking refuge from the war abroad.Join the conversation about this story »

Britain votes to join US-led air strikes against jihadists

London (AFP) - British lawmakers on Friday voted overwhelmingly to join anti-jihadist air strikes in Iraq as US-led raids in Syria disrupted the Islamic State group's lucrative oil-pumping operations. The House of Commons voted by a majority of 524 to 43 after the main political parties all approved military action saying that "lessons from the past" of the 2003 Iraq war had been learned."This is not a threat on the far side of the world. Left unchecked, we will face a terrorist caliphate on the shores of the Mediterranean," Prime Minister David Cameron said ahead of the vote.He warned the campaign could last for "years" as dissenting MPs in the debate questioned the duration and scope of the operation.Washington is eager to build the broadest possible coalition to tackle IS, which has captured large areas of Syria and Iraq and declared an Islamic "caliphate".Britain's Royal Air Force would join warplanes from the United States, France, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Jordan hitting IS targets.Following the vote, British action is expected within days at the latest despite planned anti-war protests. In recent days, Washington and its allies have carried out bombing targeting the funding sources of what US President Barack Obama has branded a "network of death".In the latest airstrikes, US planes destroyed four tanks operated by militants in Syria as well as several vehicles and jihadist positions in Iraq, the Pentagon said. The US-led coalition also bombed oil refineries in east and northeast Syria where IS jihadists extract crude for sale on the black market, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based monitoring group.Experts say sales of oil from Syria and Iraq usually earn IS between $1 million and $3 million a day.But now, according to activists in Deir Ezzor, pumping has stopped."Oil extraction has been halted because of the security situation," said Leith al-Deiri who spoke to AFP via the Internet.Another activist from Deir Ezzor, Rayan al-Furati, confirmed the halt."There are no traders or clients going to the fields, (because they are) fearing the strikes," he said.- No consensus on Syria -Britain and France have both been careful to rule out launching strikes in Syria at the hub of the IS group's power, unlike the Arab allies taking part in the aerial campaign."I do believe there's a strong case for us to do more in Syria but I did not want to bring a motion to the house today which there wasn't consensus for," Cameron said on Friday.Denmark said Friday it would send seven F-16 fighters to help combat IS militants in Iraq, joining Belgium and the Netherlands which also plan to deploy six aircraft each. The Netherlands will also provide 250 military personnel and 130 trainers for the Iraqi military, and Greece said it would send arms to Kurdish forces battling the jihadists.Turkey has so far declined to take part in military action, and has denied claims that its airspace or airbases have been used by coalition forces. But President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Friday that Ankara had changed its stance on its involvement in the campaign against IS following the release of Turkish hostages held in Iraq,He said that "necessary steps" would be taken by parliament on October 2, without elaborating.- Extremist suspects held -IS's brutal abuses against civilians, rival fighters and Arab and Western hostages, as well as its success in recruiting Western members, have triggered international alarm.FBI director James Comey said Thursday there was "no doubt" that jihadists would try to stage revenge attacks in the United States."The logic is that if they aspire to be the leader of the global jihad you don't get there without striking America," he said.He also said the FBI had identified the Islamic State jihadist with a British accent who has appeared in videos showing the beheading of two US journalists and a British aid worker, although he declined to give further details. On Thursday and Friday, police in London arrested 11 people suspected of links to Islamic extremists, including a notorious radical preacher. The coalition strikes in Syria are reported to have killed at least 140 jihadists as well as 13 civilians.Fighting between regime troops and rebels has continued on the ground in Syria alongside the international air strikes, with the army recapturing a key strategic town near Damascus on Thursday. The conflict that began in Syria in March 2011 as an uprising against President Bashar al-Assad's regime has spawned a massive refugee crisis, with more than three million Syrians now taking refuge from the war abroad.Join the conversation about this story »

Jihadists Flock from Syria to Europe via Greece

A recent arrest suggests that Greece is the preferred country of entry for jihadists traveling from Syria and Iraq into Western Europe. On Wednesday, a 24-year old jihadist travelled from Athens International Airport to Charleroi, Belgium without being noticed by Greek authorities. His journey ended when Belgian authorities discovered that his French-issued passport was fake. In his luggage, police discovered photos and documents proving his connection to an Islamic terrorist group and his participation in military operations in Iraq and Syria. The jihadist, whose name remains unknown, is currently detained in Belgium. He has been charged with possession of false documents. His final destination was Norway. Belgian newspapers reported that this is not the first-known incident in which Islamic militants have filtered into Western Europe via Greece. A similar incident occurred in early August; a jihadist traveling to Belgium from Syra via Greece was discovered carrying a fake passport. In his luggage, police discovered videos of executions in Syria.

Samaras Must Win Merkel’s Support To Exit The Crisis

Despite some encouraging economic signs – 27% returns on Greek debt, the highest among sovereign securities thus far this year – a recent Bloomberg article notes that Prime Minister Samaras still faces a difficult uphill battle if Greece intends to exit the crisis in the coming year. According to critics, reads the article, “the decline in Greek stocks is a better reflection of the outlook for Samaras as the pace of economic overhaul slows, the ECB probes weaknesses in the banking system, and opposition leader Alexis Tsipras plots to bring down his government by forcing a snap election in February.” Samaras’s attempt to convince Angela Merkel that Greece would be able to handle an early exit from the memorandum amounts to a strategy to prevent early elections and maintain power, continues the article. The much promised economic recovery has yet to be seen on the ground. Investors, meanwhile, have grown increasingly concerned about the prospect of Greek political instability in the coming months. SYRIZA, the article states, is seeking to capitalize on the difficulties Samaras faces in his effort to reboot the economy. The leftist opposition party is reaching out to voters who blame their financial difficulties on the current government and the troika. Tsipras is pushing for early elections in early 2015; according to opinion polls, he will likey win. “And that’s what brought Samaras to Berlin,” the article states. The prime minister is hoping to win the Chancellor’s critical support for Greek recovery and exit from the memorandum ahead of schedule. The article goes on to point out that German as well as other European officials remain concerned about Greece. As such, they are reluctant to provide any concrete commitments: “The EU’s most recent assessment said that some rule changes have still to be implemented by the officials on the front line and the IMF has complained about delays in a raft of measures from firing public workers to cutting restrictions on consumer goods and setting up a framework for dealing with bad loans.”

Shocking Images from Kastoria Lake

For the last month, phytoplankton in the lake of Kastoria in northern Greece has formed a thick, white ooze on the water’s surface. The foam, which has caused the lake and surrounding environs to smell, has disturbed locals and attracted the attention of international scientists. According to Athens Macedonian News Agency, 70 scientists from 25 countries are currently participating in an international conference on phytoplankton in Kastoria. They are examining the strange phenomenon hands-on. Maria Moustaka, professor of biology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), noted that the occurence is in fact a “political” issue. The situation of the lake, which has been closely monitored by scientists for nearly 20 years, has gone entirely ignored by the Greek state. Scientific data and proposed solutions to the sludge have fallen on deaf bureaucratic ears. Led by Moustaka, the Kastoria scientists took water samples from the lake and found that phosphorus from urban waste was contributing to eutrophication and, consequently, the increase of phytoplankton and toxic cyanobacteria that form the green and white paste on the lake’s surface. Moustaka stressed the need for an immediate cleansing of the lake. The mayor of Kastoria, Anestis Angelis, agreed that the clearing the plankton is an issue of primary importance for the new municipal authority. The lake is linked with the city’s life and economy. Restaurants, cafes and bars surrounding the lake are suffering setbacks related to the sludge. Fewer customers now approach the lake due to its strong odor.

Wages in Greece Fell for the Second Quarter of 2014

Wages in Greece continued falling in the second quarter of the year, recent reports show. Greece has now become one of just three EU member-states to record a decline in wages in both the first and second quarters of 2014. In Greece, the wages index fell by 1.4% in the second quarter of 2014. During the corresponding period last year, wages decreased by 7.4%. Seasonally-adjusted, the wage index fell by 1% in the second quarter of 2014, after a 9.1% decline recorded in the second quarter of 2013. With the exception of seasonal worker wages, Greek wages have been falling continuously for four years now: by an average rate of 5.05% in 2011, 7.4% in 2012, 6.55% in 2013 and 1.35% in the first half of 2014. The highest wage increases were recorded in Estonia, with a 7.7% rise in the first quarter and 7.4% in the second; Latvia 7.4% and 6.9%, respectively; Slovakia, 3.5% and 6.1%; Romania, 5.3% and 5.0%; and Hungary, 3.1% and 4.9%. In Germany, wages increased by 1.3% in the first quarter and 1.6% in the second.

Look Out Mediterranean Countries, the Northerners Are Stealing Your Healthy Diet

Four years ago, when I told everyone that I was moving to Northern Europe to study the Mediterranean diet, people thought that I had a screw loose, especially because at that time I was living in Florence, a city close to the Mediterranean Sea... Only slightly disturbed by those raised eyebrows, I packed my stuff, jumped on a plane and moved to Gothenburg, Sweden. There I started working at the local university on a project aimed at assessing the health effects of a Mediterranean-like diet in the Scandinavian population. My decision to move to Northern Europe worked out pretty well, because I ended up working on different cohort studies and managed to publish a good number of scientific papers. These describe the association between following a Mediterranean-like diet in Scandinavia and increased longevity, reduced cardiovascular and cancer risk as well as reduced childhood overweight and obesity. The latter paper, in particular, describes the most interesting and unexpected results I have obtained in Sweden. After analyzing data from children aged 2-9 years and recruited within the framework of the EU-funded 8-country IDEFICS study, my colleagues and I surprisingly discovered that Swedish children were the ones characterized by the highest adherence levels to this pattern. At the same time, the children living in Cyprus (an island in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea) showed the lowest adherence rates. Although these results might sound rather tin-eared to many, they did not surprise my colleagues from Cyprus, who knew that the diet of children living in their country is unfortunately moving away from traditional habits. Swedish children turned out to be eating the highest frequency intakes of fruit, nuts, vegetables and cereal grains of the whole cohort, whereas Cypriot children had hamburgers almost every day! Also, we found that the lowest frequency of vegetable intake was consumed by Italian kids, a disappointing result that I also expected. Our analyses also revealed that high consumption of fruit, nuts, vegetables, fish and cereal grains (and low consumption of dairy and meat products) was inversely associated with the likelihood of being overweight or obese. Notably, having these habits at the time of recruitment inversely predicted high changes in body mass index and waist circumference over time. Children's dietary data were obtained by interviewing parents and the children were sampled in one city per country; therefore our results cannot necessarily be considered representative of the whole population. However, there is a lack of studies comparing the diet of children from different countries and our results will hopefully stimulate further research on this topic. The Mediterranean countries have the highest childhood overweight and obesity prevalence in Europe and the recent economic crisis can only exacerbate the situation, due to the known link between overweight and a lower socio-economic status. If confirmed by other studies, the fact that the diet of children living in these countries is less healthy compared to that of their North European peers should be taken as a wake-up call for public health experts and politicians from South European countries. They should feel urged to find effective solutions to improve a situation that risks culminating in a serious burden on the health care system. As a matter of fact, an overweight child today is at higher risk of becoming an obese adult tomorrow compared to a normal weight child. It is therefore expedient to act now before it is too late. This post is part of a series produced by The Huffington Post and the Harvard School of Public Health, in conjunction with the "Mediterranean Diet and Workplace Health" conference (September 27-28 in Boston at HSPH). This event will feature lectures, panels, select chef-supervised meals and a Greek food and wine exhibition to increase awareness, appeal, and understanding of Mediterranean dietary habits as a vehicle for improved workplace and school health. For more information about Mediterranean Diet and Workplace Health, visit here.

Recovering Spain strengthens growth, jobs outlook

Madrid (AFP) - Spain raised its growth forecast on Friday for this year and next and said unemployment would ease by two percentage points in 2015 as the economic recovery gathers pace. The finance ministry published forecasts of 1.3 percent growth for 2014 and two percent for 2015, raising earlier estimates of 1.2 percent for this year and 1.8 percent for next year.It said it expected Spain's unemployment rate to ease to 24.2 percent this year and to 22.2 percent in 2015.Currently at 24.47 percent, Spain's unemployment rate is the second highest in the eurozone after bailed-out Greece. The ministry said it expected the country to create 622,000 jobs in 2014 and 2015, after six years of job destruction sparked by the collapse of a construction boom in 2008."This improvement comes despite a less favourable economic climate, particularly in the eurozone," it said in a statement."The recovery of the Spanish economy is strengthening, with higher growth than that of the countries in the single currency zone."The government published the new forecasts after a cabinet meeting at which it approved the country's 2015 budget.Join the conversation about this story »
