More People Fled To Europe By Boat This Year Than The Population Of Washington, DC
The immense scale of the refugee and migrant crisis that has shaken Europe was highlighted this week by a staggering statistic. Last month, 218,394 men, women and children fled to Europe via the Mediterranean Sea, the United Nations refugee agency said on Monday. This is more than any previous month on record, and roughly the same number as arrived during the whole of 2014. Last year, UNHCR estimated that 219,000 people fled to Europe by sea. This year, to date, some 744,000 have arrived, over half of them Syrians. That number is more than the population of Washington, D.C. It is close to the total number of "boat people" who fled Vietnam over two decades ago after the end of the war. It is ten times the number of refugees that the U.S. has admitted this year and more than 500 times the number of Syrians resettled in the U.S. since the war broke out in 2011. The October figure is "beyond anything that could have been expected even a few months ago," UNHCR spokesman Adrian Edwards said. The number of refugees and migrants sailing to Europe keeps climbing even though the sea crossing is getting more dangerous as winter approaches, bringing storms and freezing temperatures. Usually, the number of people attempting the journey spikes in the summer, and declines during fall and winter. This year, the soaring figures are bucking the trend. Some 3,440 people have already drowned this year trying to sail to Europe, according to UNHCR. Now, months after Europe reeled from the image of three year-old Alan Kurdi lying dead on a Greek beach, the bodies of children are again washing up on Europe's shores. > MORE ON THE REFUGEE CRISIS: > > - A Thousand Miles In Their Shoes > - How You Can Help Refugees Stay Safe And Warm This Winter > - 5 Major Myths Of Europe's Refugee And Migrant Crisis Debunked > - Read The Diary Of Syria's Piano Man On His Escape To Europe > - Despite Falling Temperatures, Refugee Arrivals In Europe Keep > Rising _ALSO ON HUFFPOST:_ -- This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms. YANIS VAROUFAKIS: If I could do any job in Europe it would be chancellor of Germany
We now know what Yanis Varoufakis, the former Greek finance minister, would do if he could take any job in Europe "I would like to be Chancellor of Germany of course," Varoufakis said when asked the question at the Financial Times banking summit on Tuesday. "I would have to brush up on my German." Once taking perhaps the highest political office in continental Europe, Varoufakis said he would enact a four-point plan to boost the Eurozone economy. This would include setting up a poverty fund backed by the European Central Bank and getting the European Investment Bank to go on a "spree" investing in green energy, tech startups and the businesses of the future. Varoufakis was on fine, typically bombastic form, calling French President Francois Hollande a "figment of our collective imaginations." Pausing to answer questions after his panel, Varoufakis told Business Insider "he would be tempted to vote for Brexit, but he wouldn't do it" if he had a vote in the EU referendum expected next year. He said UK Prime Minister David Cameron, in focusing solely on German Chancellor Angela Merkel, would fail to renegotiate the Britain's role in Europe. "I believe in a campaign of civil disobedience, but within the EU," Varoufakis said. "I think (Italian leader) Renzi wants to do this. Cameron will fail if he doesn't get a large alliance" of like-minded leaders to take on the EU machine. Slovenia PM says migrant crisis could reignite Balkan conflicts
By Marja Novak LJUBLJANA (Reuters) - The migrant crisis engulfing Europe threatens to reignite conflicts between former Yugoslav republics which fought each other during the 1990s, Slovenia's prime minister said on Tuesday. Hundreds of thousands of migrants, many of them fleeing Syria's civil war, have taken the Balkan route from Greece to western Europe this year, putting great strain on the finances and infrastructure of transit countries, including the ex-Yugoslav states of Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia. The situation worsened when Hungary, an eastern outpost of the European Union's passport-free Schengen zone, shut its southern border to the migrants on Oct. 16, diverting the flow of around 135,000 people westwards from Croatia into Slovenia.
