PASOK: Papandreou’s Decision to Launch Own Party an ‘Immoral Action’
PASOK wrathfully responded to news that its former leader George Papandreou, son of the party’s founder Andreas Papandreou, was moving ahead with plans to launch his own party. In her first announcement as PASOK spokeswoman in the run-up to Greece’s general elections, MEP Eva Kaili blasted the Former Greek Premier’s decision as an “immoral and insane political act” as well as a “cold-blooded attempt to fragment PASOK” in order to set up his “own personal and privately-owned party.” “We hoped that he would finally listen to the voice of the party and national responsibility as well as the appeals for unity. We were proved wrong. His decision was taken a long time ago and did not even need a pretext,” she said. She went on to accuse Papandreou of behaving like the “heir that wants to destroy PASOK, the party founded by his father. The party that honoured him by electing him as its President and making him Prime Minister,” and expressed certainty that he would not succeed. Citing the party’s founder, Andreas Papandreou, Kaili noted that PASOK was “neither inherited, nor divided,” and accused the Former Premier of acting solely on the basis of personal goals, without any real political motive behind his decision. “What is the reason that leads a Former President of PASOK and Former Prime Minister, the man who took the crucial decisions for Greece’s entry in the initial bailout Memorandum of 2010, to attempt to break up his party? Is his position now adopted from a ‘memorandum’ or ‘anti-memorandum’ standpoint?” she added, stressing that the motives were “purely personal,” without any political or historic basis. “All those that honor and respect the name Papandreou know how to distinguish between Andreas Papandreou and George Papandreou,” she said, adding that PASOK was now dealing with the major issues that concerned the citizens as a guarantor of national stability, especially at a time when the country was being forcibly led to elections and there were questions about how it would stay on its feet. Triple Homicide in Northern Greece
A 55-year-old man in Thessaloniki, northern Greece, murdered his sister, her husband and their 12-year-old boy at their home in the area of Oraiokastro. It appears that Athanasios Kamaris, the 55-year-old perpetrator, who used to work as a taxi driver, had invested some money at the lottery shop that his brother-in-law owned. However, according to local media, he felt that he was being given less money than he was owed. On Friday, around midday, Kamaris visited his sister’s family where they had an argument, allegedly about money. At that moment, he killed his brother-in-law and his sister with a knife. According to Greek Police, the child was a witness to both crimes. When he attempted to escape, his uncle caught up and murdered the 12-year-old boy in cold blood. The neighbors were concerned due to the loud fighting and they alerted the police who arrived at the scene shortly after the call. When the 55-year-old spotted the police officers, he attempted to escape by jumping off the 3rd story balcony. He was injured and transferred to a local hospital where he is currently guarded by police officers.

The 12 Worst Investments Of 2014
Bitcoin was the single worst performing investment of 2014. From a January high of $914-$1,012 (depending on the exchange used), it fell consistently over the year: its value stands at around $315 at the time of writing. Why did it tank? The continuing government clampdown on sites selling illicit services (where anonymous bitcoins are often used as payment) didn’t help, said Extreme Tech.com. But, in reality, illicit trades made up a small proportion of Bitcoin transactions. The bitcoin ‘crisis’ was a crisis of confidence. Over 850,000 bitcoins, worth a total of $450m, were stolen from Mt Gox, the largest bitcoin exchange site, and an enormous amount of bitcoin’s value wiped. The collapse shook faith in the currency’s security, its real selling point. Who are the losers? Internet entrepreneurs the Winklevoss twins, said by The Guardian to own around 1% of theentire bitcoin market. Who are the winners? Nasdaq.com’s Martin Tillier advised purchasing bitcoin as recently as the beginning of this month, arguing that this year’s crash was merely a correction. Others think bitcoin’s value lies not in the possession of the currency, but in the technology it exploits, which may pave the way for cheaper and more secure ways to transfer funds. What have we learned? Unregulated, anonymous currency is volatile. Who’d have guessed? Here are the other 11 worst investments of last year: Number 2: Crude Oil Brent crude oil started it slide in June, and by the end of the year it had fallen by 45% as the price war between Opec, the US and Russia raged. Number 3: Quindell Outsourcing firm Quindell saw its share price fall from 682p to just 34p after a damning research report, and the questionable share dealings of several senior staff. Number 4: the Russian rouble With Russia’s Vladimir Putin locked in a war of wills with the West, the rouble’s gentle decline became a crash – losing 12% in just one week. Number 5: Tesco Tesco shares almost halved in value in the last year, as it faced competition from discount supermarkets and suffered the mother of all accounting scandals. Number 6: Greek Athex index Greek stocks slid to their lowest in 17 months this year. The country faces huge political challenges, as the spectre of a ‘Grexit’ rears its head again. Number 7: copper Prices for non-precious metals have plummeted in the past year. And copper has been the worst affected — sliding more than 15% in 2014. Number 8: Argentinian peso The Argentinian peso began the year with a 20% slide. It has continued to fall steadily, leaving the economy in almost as bad a state as it was in 2001 and 2002. Number 9: Twitter Concerns about cash-flow and a failure to compete with Facebook meant Twitter’s share price slid by 42% this year. Number 10: Mattel Mattel’s share price plunged 36% in 2014 as sales of its Barbie and Fisher-Price brands plunged, and a 20 year partnership with Disney bit the dust. Number 11: Russian corporate bonds Yields on Russian corporate bonds soared this year as billions of dollars’ worth of capital left the country in the wake of sanctions by the EU and US. Number 12: Avon Products Inc Mismanagement, declining sales and the long arm of the law each played their part in a terrible year for Avon, the world’s largest direct seller of beauty products.Join the conversation about this story »

The 20 Most Fun Colleges In America
Between exams, papers, and hours of studying, college can seem like all work and no play. But for many, it also means freeflowing alcohol and seemingly endless parties — and can end up being the best four years of your life. We looked at 12 categories from The Princeton Review's 2015 college rankings to find the most fun colleges in the country, combining the rankings to determine which schools were the most fun overall. Based on our results, the typical "fun" school, is a large public university with a strong Greek system and competitive athletics. Click here to read our complete methodology.#20 Miami University Oxford, Ohio One of The Princeton Review's top Party Schools, Miami houses the founding chapters of several now-national fraternities and still maintains a large and active Greek life. Miami students always have somewhere to party, and are able to tailor their experience to whatever partying venue they prefer, whether it's a frat house or a local bar. #19 Auburn University Auburn, Alabama The home football games for Auburn, the Princeton Review's top Jock School, are packed with students shouting "War Eagle" — the school's battle cry. It's especially loud during the annual Iron Bowl against the University of Alabama, Auburn's top rival. Before the game, hundreds of students come out to Auburn's huge tailgates, which are loaded with games, food, and, of course, beer. #18 Bucknell University Lewisburg, Pennsylvania A small school with a large Greek scene, more than half of Bucknell's students are in a fraternity or sorority. With not much else to do in the surrounding area, students have social lives that are pretty much restricted to campus — where there is always a lot of alcohol and someone throwing a party. 4-Year-Old Girl Found Next to Dead Father in Northern Greece
A tragic incident occurred in Evros, northern Greece, when a 4-year-old girl was found curled up next to her father who had passed away, trying to protect herself from the cold. The child and the young man’s body were found by a farmer in a drilling water hutch located just 300 meters from Evros river. The farmer immediately alerted the local authorities. According to the man’s papers, he was a 32-year-old Syrian national. His body has been transferred to the University Hospital of Alexandroupolis, while his death has not yet been classified as a criminal act. The young girl had stayed with her father for around 10 hours before she was found and transferred to the General Hospital of Didymoteicho. She received first aid and doctors later notified the Smile of the Child organization. A social worker arrived at the hospital along with the rescuers in order to take the child to Thessaloniki, where she was admitted at the city’s general hospital. The girl was examined and her health state was evaluated. After doctors found that she was in good health, the Smile of the Child organization, in collaboration with international organizations, has begun efforts to reunite the child with her family. A translator attempted to figure out what happened to the 4-year-old girl but she has not yet been able to talk about it.

Hellenic Aerospace Industry Under Pressure Due to Elections
The Hellenic Aerospace Industry has been under pressure due to the political turmoil in the country. The New Year was not a happy occasion for the company’s employees who were expecting the program reactivation contract for the Hellenic Navy’s P3 Orion aircraft. However, according to Greek media, even though Deputy Finance Minister Christos Staikouras approved the funds, National Defense Minister Nikos Dendias did not sign for the program activation. As a result, the Hellenic Aerospace Industry lost 100 million that it would have received in order to keep afloat. Meanwhile, because of the upcoming elections, this decision is expected to lead to a domino of new developments. The Americans who are involved in the Hellenic Aerospace Industry program and are essentially helping to keep the company afloat, have already expressed their dissatisfaction towards the situation.

Investigation Into Greek Ferry Fire Widens
BRINDISI, Italy (AP) — Firefighters boarded the charred Norman Atlantic ferry in the Italian port of Brindisi on Friday to put out residual fires and allow a search for possible dead. A blaze broke out aboard the ferry on Sunday as it was traveling from Greece to Italy, killing at least 11 people. Italy says 477 people were rescued, most by helicopters that plucked survivors off the top deck in gale-force winds and carried them to nearby boats. The probe into the disaster widened Friday. In addition to the ship's captain and the head of the company that built the ferry — both Italians — the prosecutor's office in Bari put two other crew members and two representatives of the Greek ferry line Anek, which rented the Norman Atlantic, under investigation, the Italian news agency ANSA reported. Towing the ferry overnight across the choppy seas of the Adriatic took 17 hours. Several hours after the Norman Atlantic arrived in Brindisi port on Friday, a second tug was tied to the ferry to help stabilize it both front and back. Two firefighters went aboard to check for residual fires burning since smoke was still coming out. One side of the ferry was blackened by smoke. An acrid smell was noticeable dockside. Inside the many trucks and cars on the car desk could be feeding the fire. Once the blaze is fully extinguished and the boat stabilized in port, firefighters will start searching for bodies. A prosecutor must be on board for the start of the official inspection of the wreck to help determine the blaze's cause. Prosecutors fear unregistered migrants were smuggled aboard in trucks and might have died in the flames and smoke. Italian newspapers, reportedly quoting from transcripts of the ferry captain's questioning Wednesday by prosecutors, said Capt. Argilio Giacomazzi told prosecutors that crews didn't properly follow his orders in lowering the lifeboats and that the car deck had too many vehicles. Bari prosecutors have declined to say what the captain told them, citing laws governing investigations. Italian TV reports said passengers noted that five crewmen were in the only lifeboat launched, in apparent violation of rules that specify only three crew members should go aboard with the evacuated passengers. ___ Frances D'Emilio contributed from Rome.
