Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias participated via a videotaped message in the online 5th Brussels Conference on supporting the future of Syria and the region, which took place under the auspices of the EU and the UN. In his intervention, the Minister pointed to the great importance of the conference in the context of the efforts to reduce the consequences of the ongoing tragedy of the Syrian people 10 years after the outbreak of the civil war. In this context, Mr. Dendias noted the extensive violations of international humanitarian law and the displacement of 7 million people within Syria’s borders and 5.6 million refugees in neighbouring countries, including Greece, which has received thousands of Syrian refugees since the very first moment of the crisis. He also underscored that there continues to be an urgent need to provide humanitarian and medical assistance, food and protection, particularly in the northern part of the country. Pointing out that Syria is still the theatre of a proxy war, the Minister underscored that this must change and that the war must cease to serve the interests of foreign powers. He also reiterated Greece’s support for the UN Special Envoy for Syria and the efforts to find a political solution that ensures the country’s territorial integrity and the security of its whole population, in accordance with the resolutions of the UN Security Council. He stressed that, at the same time, Greece remains firmly committed to promoting peace and stability in the wider Eastern Mediterranean region. Finally, the Minister stated that this year, once again, Greece will contribute in the context of the Conference in a symbolic gesture of solidarity.Read the Minister’s intervention (images/docs/anakoinoseis/2021/20210330_FMDendias_intervention_Syria.pdf). Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias participates in a webinar hosted by the Jewish Institute for National Security of America (JINSA) on US-Greece/East Med Security (30 March 2021)
Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias participated today, as a keynote speaker, in the webinar of the American think tank “Jewish Institute for National Security of America” (JINSA) on US-Greece/East Med Security. In his remarks, the Minister gave a general overview of the main axes of Greek foreign policy, first of all highlighting the two main constants on which it is based, namely respect for International Law and the principles of the United Nations Charter and, on the other hand, its commitment to multilateralism and bilateral cooperation as an effective vehicle to promote synergies and overcome tensions. The Minister pointed out, furthermore, the influence of three main variables: the international policy of the US, Russia, China and the EU; the growing instability in our wider region – exacerbated by Turkey's unlawful behaviour and military involvement in regional crises, such as in Syria and Libya; and the positive developments in the Middle East, where the Abraham Accords signal a new paradigm for relations among countries of the region. On the basis of these constants, Greece’s main foreign policy goals can be briefly summarized as promoting peace, prosperity and cooperation with all partners. In this context, Mr. Dendias highlighted Greece’s stabilising role in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Balkans, and its emergence as an energy hub. He also referred specifically to Libya and the Cyprus issue. At the same time, he pointed to the strengthening of the Greek-U.S. strategic partnership and the prospects for further enhancing it. He also highlighted the multifaceted development of cooperation with Israel and the promotion of multilateral cooperation schemes with countries in the region. Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias participates in the online event of “The Hellenic Initiative Canada” (31 March 2021)
Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias participated today in the online event of “The Hellenic Initiative Canada,” representing the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. In his welcome address, the Minister praised the Hellenic diaspora’s role in supporting Greece’s efforts. He also highlighted Greece's positive role and influence in its wider region, from the Balkans to the Eastern Mediterranean, the Black Sea, the Middle East and Africa – a role recognized by regional as well as global players. This is due not only to Greece’s geopolitical importance, but also to its commitment to International Law and the principles of the UN Charter. Referring to the celebration of the bicentennial of the beginning of the Greek War of Independence, the Minister congratulated the Greek Canadian community on the successful hosting, in collaboration with the Greek diplomatic missions, of major events, including the lighting of many cities, as well as Niagara Falls, in the colors of the Greek flag. Russia registers 'world's first' Covid vaccine for animals
Russia announced Wednesday it had registered what it said was the world's first coronavirus vaccine for animals, describing the step as important to disrupting mutations. It said mass production of the vaccine could begin in April. The agriculture oversight agency Rosselkhoznadzor said in a statement that the vaccine called Carnivak-Cov had been tested beginning October on dogs, cats, mink, foxes and other animals and was proven to be effective. "All test animals that were vaccinated developed antibodies to coronavirus in 100 percent of cases," said Konstantin Savenkov, deputy head of Rosselkhoznadzor. "It is the world's first and only product for preventing Covid-19 in animals," he said. Rosselkhoznadzor said the development of its shot would help prevent mutations in animals and cited Denmark's decision to cull 15 million mink last year after some were found to be carrying a mutated virus variant. "The use of the vaccine, according to Russian scientists, can prevent the development of virus mutations," the statement said. The agency added that animal-breeding facilities and private companies from countries including Greece, Poland, Austria, the United States, Canada and Singapore had expressed interest in Carnivak-Cov. Military officials in Russia's second city Saint Petersburg announced earlier this week that army dogs would undergo mandatory vaccination before being deployed at airports and participating in nationwide World War II commemorations in May. Russia has heavily promoted its state-sponsored coronavirus vaccine abroad but it has been met with scepticism in the West and even by many in Russia. Officials registered the Sputnik V vaccine last August, ahead of large-scale clinical trials, sparking concern among many experts over the fast-track process. It has since registered two more vaccines. Leading medical journal The Lancet has since confirmed Sputnik V to be safe and over 90 percent effective. Moscow has applied to Europe's medicines regulator to gain approval for the use of Sputnik V in the 27-nation bloc, but is still waiting for an answer. © 2021 AFP
