Greek Culture Ministry Plans to Reopen Old Acropolis Museum
Since June 2009 the old Acropolis museum, located next to the Parthenon, has remained empty. However, Greek Ministry of Culture Directorate of Museums approved the proposal to renovate and reopen the space. According to the Greek news agency ANA-MPA the proposed plan includes refurbishing the interior of the building and turning it into a modern venue, open to visitors, where inscriptions and scattered architectural parts which are now exposed to the elements will be stored and exhibited. The museum will also exhibit material from its record of older restorations and will include a conservation lab visible to visitors. The building exterior which took its final form thanks to Patroklos Karantinos in 1964 will remain unchanged. Meanwhile, this will reduce the worksite facilities and storage containers that are currently located on Acropolis by over 40%. Even though the building has not yet been declared as listed, Lina Mendoni, the ministry’s secretary who made the initial proposal noted that “to protect a building you don’t have to declare it as listed, much more so when it has the protection of an archaeological site like the Acropolis.”
Nikos Ioannidis signs with Borussia Dortmund!
Jurgen Klopp and Borussia Dortmund have decided to invest in Nikos Ioannidis talent, signing him on loan from Greek club Olympiakos. The 20-year-old striker had been participating in the Eredivisie with Dutch side PEC Zwolle since the beginning of the season, who signed him after his excellent performances with Hansa Rostock in Germany’s 3rd Division where he scored 6 goals in 30 appearances. Being demoted to the reserve team by Zwolle’s coach Ron Jans was the final reason Ioannidis was looking to break his contract and search for his new destination. After talks with Borussia in the summer fell apart, the 2012 German Champions returned with a new offer which would keep him on the roster for 1 and a half years with the prospect of purchasing him in the summer of 2016.
Restricted Internet Use for Clergy Members
The Greek Orthodox Church Holy Synod issued a formal notice which limits the internet use allowed to clerics and monks. In its notice, the Holy Synod stated certain restrictions regarding online discussions and comments that members of the clergy make using divisive speech, propagandism or partisan faction promotions. “Monks are not allowed to express themselves, even by means of the Internet in any way which may lead to alienation from their ascetic promise, or involve themselves in worldly issues, which may affect the nature of monasticism,” stated the notice. This decision targeted several websites that can be found on the internet which offer online confessions or candle lighting. Meanwhile, the notice also included restrictions regards parish website, which from now on will only be organized after receiving formal approval, while their only aim will be to inform parishioners about rations and catechesis programs or about the history of the church, without presenting any individuals.
