Independent Greek Film Hosted at Indiegogo
Indiegogo is well-known crowdfunding website that currently hosts an independent Greek film entitled “Maxilari” (“Pillow”), the directorial debut of young Greek creator Konstantinos Kakogiannis. The film was first screened in Greece at Athens International Film Festival. Its production team is currently trying to release the film worldwide through the crowdfunding program offered by Indiegogo. The film’s storyline revolves around three friends who decide to go camping far away from civilization. They are trying to forget, to dream and have a good time. They discuss about conformism and culture, politics, violence and the human nature, seeking answers to eternal questions: what are we? What is our destiny as individuals and as part of a group? At the same time, their attempts to escape from civilization are self-sabotaged. Each of them carries his own “pillow” while the arrival of three women only makes the situation more complicated. Criticism towards the dominant culture takes the form of criticism towards an alternative culture. In his directorial debut, the film’s creator is looking at a certain ideology as a convenient “pillow” that we can push against anything that is suffocating us, regardless of our ability or desire to avoid it.

In Greek Households the Man Earns, the Woman Does Housework
The Greek family remains very traditional as the man goes to work and puts bread on the table while the woman stays at home and tends to the household, according to a new report by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT). The “Time Use Survey” conducted by ELSTAT took one year to complete. Its purpose was to see how people in Greece distribute their time in various activities. Regarding household work, men aged 20-74 spend an average of 1 hour and 31 minutes doing household chores while women of the same age spend 4 hours and 36 minutes. According to the survey, 95.3% of women spend at least 10 minutes a day on housework, while only 74% of men do the same. The household activity men like the most is cooking (38.3%) but only 2.4% are involved in laundry, ironing or mending clothes. Leisure Time Men spend 6 hours and 24 minutes per day in sports, outdoor activities, fine arts, crafts, hobbies and information technology while women spend 5 hours and 10 minutes in such activities. Overall, 47.2% of men have a hobby or use computers while only 29.9% of women do the same; 28.9% of men do sports or outdoor activities while for women that is 20%. Also, 92.8% of the total population watches television, reads newspapers and magazines and listens to the radio for an average of 2 hours and 56 minutes per day. Greek men and women sleep an average of 8 hours and 25 minutes per day, including naps and staying in bed. On personal hygiene, women dedicate six minutes per day more than men. People in rural areas – mostly women – dedicate an average of 12 minutes a day on religious activities while residents of urban communities dedicate only 5. Information and Communication Technologies Men spend 43 minutes per day on information and communication technologies. Women, on the other hand, spend 25 minutes. However, people in Greece appear to be very social as 83.7% of women and 82.1% of men spend at least 10 minutes a day to visit friends and relatives or talk to them on the telephone. Over 82% of the total population has an active social life combined with other activities outside the home, spending an average of 2 hours and 28 minutes. Eating and Transportation Time The average Greek spends 2 hours and 16 minutes daily on the table. Men spend 24 minutes a day on some means of transportation to go to various leisure activities while women spend exactly half of that. Commuting time in urban areas is 12 minutes on average and 6 minutes in rural areas. Transportation is 1 hour and 2 minutes on average for the total population. Time at Home and Work The majority of the population spends the biggest part of the day at home (18 hours and 17 minutes on average, including sleep). The older the person, the more time they spend at home. In ages over 65, average time spent at home is 20 hours and 31 minutes. Also, women spend more time at home than men (19 hours and 24 minutes compared to 17 hours and 1 minute). Greek men spend more time at work than women; they work an average of 2 hours and 31 minutes per day, especially in the 35-44 age group where the average is 4 hours and 21 minutes.

Greece Votes to Preserve Its Audiovisual Heritage
The Greek Parliament has voted on a new legislation that institutionalized the legal obligation to deposit films and the establishment of a National Film Heritage Preservation Organization that will be managed by the Greek Film Archive. Since 1982, the Council of Europe Convention on audiovisual heritage provided for the mandatory deposit of a copy of any type of audiovisual material for EU member-states. This obligation includes the deposit of a copy in a formally specified file and the deposited material’s necessary preservation and protection. However, after the abolition of the Greek National Audiovisual Archive, there was no organization responsible for the preservation of film, thus irreparably exposing Greece on a European and international level. The new legislation aims to fill the existing gap, entrusting this service to the Greek Film Archive, fully in line with what is provided by the European Union and the Council of Europe in regards to each country’s audiovisual heritage. To cover the collection, cataloging, archiving, preservation, conservation, restoration, recovery, digitization and availability costs, the organization will receive an annual grant from the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports. The Greek Film Archive currently hosts a total of 10,000 Greek and foreign films and it is a permanent member of the International Federation of Film Archives, a founding member of the Association of European Film Archives and Cinematheques and the only film heritage protection foundation in Greece .

30-Year-Old Computer Engineer from Corfu Tackles ‘Fake Facebook’
His aim is to tackle as many of the 81 million fake facebook profiles as possible, that most users have encountered at least once. The 30-year-old computer engineer from Corfu, Giorgos Delaportas, who created the unique program that automatically examines and classifies a profile as ”fake” within less than two seconds, explains to Greek Reporter what led him to the creation of ”FAKE FB – Fake Profile Examiner” and underlines the dangers hidden behind model-like profile photos that are simply… unreal. ”It was a while ago when I got fed up of repeatedly declining friend requests from fake users. Starting from annoying electronic hawkers, people hidden behind made up names and stolen photos can go far beyond that, to stealing personal information or blackmailing. Every time I was clicking ‘ignore’ I was thinking that there does not exist a program that could instantly classify the requests for me, before even accepting them. Two months after I got the last request from such a profile, ‘FAKE FB’ was finally developed,” Îœr. Delaportas says. Its installation as well as its use is simple, while the only condition is the use of Google Chrome as a web browser. To download it users can visit the Chrome Web Store where it is available for free, following three simple steps: Click on the blue ”installation” button, press ”OK” to agree with terms and conditions and the shortcut will appear on Chrome, restart the browser and ”FAKE FB” is ready to use. ”The program uses advanced A.I mechanisms and several metrics to examine profiles that look suspicious. It is so simple that it almost feels like magic,” explains Îœr. Delaportas, adding that ”according to facebook official stats, there are at least one billion active users. It is impossible to figure out the purpose of each one of the strangers that might interact with you. Underage users are vulnerable out there and can easily become an easy ‘catch.’ One of the main reasons ‘FAKE FB’ was developed is to protect children, while it is impossible for parents to control every cyber step they take. In any case, younger users can now use the program to check if they should accept or decline friend requests from people they do not know.” Being available for almost three months, ”FAKE FB” has managed to attract more than 550 users and Îœr. Delaportas remains confident that this gap in users’ personal life protection will lead the program to success. ”I could not believe that there was not a single program for such a usual problem that all facebook users have to deal with from time to time,” he concludes.

Christmas Holidays at the Acropolis Museum
The Acropolis Museum in Athens, Greece , is planning on entertaining its visitors throughout the holiday season with various imaginative workshops for children and many special presentations and surprises. Visitors will have the chance to see the unique Acropolis model made of Lego pieces which was recently given to the Greek museum by the Nicholson Museum in Sydney, Australia. The model was built by Ryan McNaught, who used 120.000 pieces and spend approximately 300 hours assembling it. The model has already attracted more than 100.000 visitors during its exhibition at the Nicholson Museum. The Acropolis Museum has prepared several workshops where children can learn about ancient Greeks and their customs. For example, one of the workshops teaches how ancient Greeks used to decorate the statue of goddess Athena during the festive days. They washed it, decorated it with jewels and dressed it in new garments. Children will be encouraged to create their own ornaments and statue decorations, which they will be able to take home. Other workshops include a tour around the museum, where children can look for ornaments among the ancient artifacts and artworks. The curators hope that the ancient ornaments will inspire children to create brilliant gifts for their friends and family in the spirit of Christmas celebrations. Meanwhile, as part of a workshop about ancient customs, children will have the chance to make their own imaginative 2015 good luck charms using modern-day materials and decorate this year’s olive branch, just like ancient Greeks used to do. On Sunday, December 28, the Museum will welcome the Greek Navy Band who will perform Christmas and New Year songs along with soprano Evdokia Moisidou and tenor Stavros Salambasopoulos.
