by Associated Press Atromitos inflicts Greek league loss on Olympiakos Associated Press - 27 September 2014 16:02-04:00 ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Atromitos handed Olympiakos its first defeat in the Greek league and joined the defending champion and PAOK in first place on Saturday. PAOK can take sole possession of the lead when it hosts OFI on Sunday. Also, Asteras won 1-0 at Platanias and Xanthi drew 1-1 at Panionios. Atromitos' victory came three days after it hired former Portuguese international Ricardo Sa Pinto as its new coach. "Coach was wise not to make too many changes, but he rallied us," said Tassos Karamanos, the goalscorer with a low drive in the 29th minute. Olympiakos coach Michel said his players lacked passion. Four days before Olympiakos' Champions League game at Malmo, Michel used the same lineup that beat Atletico Madrid 3-2. Recent Poll Gives SYRIZA Lengthening Lead Over New Democracy
According to a recent Public Issue poll published by “Efimerida ton Syntakton,” SYRIZA’s lead over New Democracy is steadily growing, with approximately 36 percent of Greeks now supporting the leftist opposition party. This figure is up 11% since May’s European elections. Greece’s third-most popular political party is now To Potami, garnering approximately 9.5% of all votes. Golden Dawn follows in fourth place, with 7.5%; the Communist KKE Party with 6.5%; PASOK Parth 5.5%; Independent Greeks 4%; DEMAR 1%. All remaining parties control roughly 5% of the electorate. Parliament seat projections based on the Public Issue poll would see SYRIZA with 146 seats, New Democracy with 66, Potami with 25, Golden Dawn with 20, KKE with 17, PASOK with 15, Independent Greeks with 11, and DEMAR with zero. Approximately 54% of respondents believe that early elections are necessary. 37% are confident that the current government will complete its term. Surprisingly, 42% of respondents stated that neither New Democracy nor SYRIZA are the parties best-capable of forming a government. The second half of the Public Issue poll will be published on Monday.

Kykkos Monastery in Cyprus Strapped for Finances
The Kykkos Monastery of Cyprus is the latest victim of the country’s ongoing economic crisis. Reports emerged yesterday that the monastery – historically, the island’s wealthiest – has been forced to carry out a series of cutbacks, including layoffs. According to Alithia newspaper, Kykkos has racked up a debt of €50 million. Bishop Nikiforos told reporters that it is with great sadness that he has had to take these measures, which will see some 40 to 50 staff members laid off. The monastery will also suspend the operation of a number of its services, Nikiforos continued. These include the social and spiritual support center, a scientific foundation of global religions and culture, a research center, a Cypriot Greek language school, as well as museum offices. Nikiforos is hopeful that Kykkos can secure European funding to avoid shutting the monastery entirely. Tenants of the various properties under the monastery’s control do not pay their rent, despite court injunctions requiring them to do so. All monastery revenue goes toward salaries. Nikiforos noted that the monastery suffered a major financial blow with Eurogroup’s March 2013 decision to “bail-in” Cypriot bank deposits, including the monastery’s own.
Patras Police Arrest Migrant Traffickers
Greek police in the port of Patras in southern Greece have recently arrested five members of a migrant trafficking group operating out of Greece and Italy. A sixth member remains undetained. The traffickers were arrested while attempting to convey 13 foreigners to Italy in the cargo hold of a truck. The traffickers include two Greek men, 52 and 64, a Greek woman, 40, and two Iraqi nationals, 36 and 40. Hiding in the truck were 12 Syrians and one Iraqi. The gang’s failed operation began at noon last Wednesday. The 64-year old Greek parked his truck in the Zavlani region of Patra. The 36-year old Iraqi subsequently transferred the 13 immigrants into the truck; the 64-year old then departed for the new port of Patras. Meanwhile, the 52-year old man and the 40-year old woman led with two different cars in the hopes of scouting out any police officers on route. The five traffickers were arrested at the new port by an undercover police officer who had witnessed the entire operation.
