Cypriot veterans win right to claim damages over UK torture claims

Government’s arguments against claim rejected, paving way for ex-guerrillas to sue for alleged abuse during independence fight A high court judge has opened the way for 34 Greek Cypriots to seek damages from Britain, following claims of torture and human rights abuses at the hands of colonial forces during the island’s struggle for independence in the 1950s. Passing judgment at the Royal Courts of Justice, Mr Justice Kerr dismissed the British government’s argument that Cypriot law applied in the case, meaning the statute of limitations would kick in. 6 old-school weight loss tips that actually work

[weight loss tips from the 60s]AMC You may roll your eyes when your mom — or even your grandmother — tries to give you advice. Their tips just seem so outdated and irrelevant. But there's one area in which their tips may be valid: diet and exercise.  Don't get me wrong: The '50s, '60s, and '70s had some major flaws and fads when it came to weight loss (the Cabbage Soup diet was as gross and ineffective as it sounds). But there are some tips from these decades that have proven to be effective and, best of all, doable.  Here are some old-school weight loss tips that have stood the test of time.  1. WORK OUT WITH A GROUP. RetroFever/YouTube Long before there were Miami club-inspired dance classes or sweat to death spin classes, there was Jazzercise. And before that, there was hula hooping. The one thing these fitness fads have in common (aside from being fun): They're done in a group. According to NBC News, working out in a group keeps you committed and helps you achieve your goal.  "Workouts with others improve consistency because they involve a commitment," Dian Griesel, co-author of TurboCharged, told NBC News. "'No shows' and cancellations get noticed by others and positive peer pressure can help curtail the urges to skip a workout … or quit." Additionally, studies have shown that working out with others pushes you to work harder and, thus, meet your goals sooner. If the thought of going to a fitness class intimidates you, start small. Make a morning gym date with your friend or go for daily walks with your significant other.   2. STOCK YOUR FRIDGE WITH COTTAGE CHEESE. Wikimedia Commons Greek yogurt may rule the dairy aisle, but there is another item lurking on the shelves that may be more beneficial: cottage cheese.  According to NPR, cottage cheese hit the market in the 1950s and was a popular purchase until the mid-1970s, particularly among people trying to shed a few pounds. And for good reasons: It's low in calories and fat, high in protein, and very versatile. (Spread some on a bagel and sprinkle on some Trader Joe's Everything But the Bagel seasoning. It'll change your life.) Need proof? The United States Department of Agriculture notes that one serving of cottage cheese contained, on average, 90 calories, 1 gram of fat, and 13 grams of protein.  Perhaps it's time to put cottage cheese back on your grocery list.  3. LIMIT YOUR SUGAR INTAKE. Angela Kerndl/SpoonUniversity The 1960s saw the rise of artificial sweeteners, which provided the same taste at sugar but for fewer calories. Since their introduction to the market, however, artificial sweeteners have been linked to weight gain and even cancer. Though the product may be problematic, the idea of reducing your sugar intake is not. Prevention reports that there are many benefits to cutting back on sugar, including an increase in weight loss and energy.  SEE THE REST OF THE STORY AT BUSINESS INSIDER

33 surprising facts about the animals who call the frozen Arctic tundra home

[Arctic animals]Shutterstock * THE ARCTIC — THE NORTHERNMOST PART OF THE EARTH — COVERS MILLIONS OF MILES OF FROZEN LANDSCAPE. * SUB-ZERO TEMPERATURES ARE OFTEN THE NORM. * DESPITE ITS HARSH CONDITIONS, THE ARCTIC IS HOME TO SOME AMAZINGLY RESILIENT BEARS, CATS, WOLVES, WEASELS, AND OTHER LAND MAMMALS.  * EVEN MARINE LIFE SUCH AS BEARDED SEALS AND NARWHALS HAVE ADAPTED TO THE OFTEN INHOSPITABLE CONDITIONS. * THE BIRDS OF THIS NORTHERN LAND CAN PULL OFF AMAZINGLY LONG YEARLY MIGRATIONS JUST TO SURVIVE. ------------------------- Imagine a land where the sun only rises and sets only once a year. A night stretches on for six months. Temperatures rarely rise above the sub-zero range, and trees can’t even grow in the inhospitable terrain. This land is the Arctic, and it is home to some of the world’s toughest, strangest, and most beautiful animals. Often defined as the region above the Arctic Circle, the Arctic is the northernmost area of the world, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center. A frozen landscape around the North Pole, the Arctic region covers about 5.5 million square miles, as noted by Arctic World.   During the winter months, the average daily temperature in the Arctic region may hover around -20°C. In fact, temps as low as -50°C  are not unheard of in the coldest parts of the Arctic, according to Canada’s Arctic. Despite these inhospitable conditions, however, plenty of animals manage to survive and thrive in this remote part of the earth. From tiny migratory birds to the giant polar bear, the variety of animal life in the Arctic is remarkable. And to live in such harsh conditions, these creatures have developed some unique and striking adaptations for survival. Read on to learn about some of the most tenacious animals on the planet. SNOWY OWLS Shutterstock Most owl species are active at night, but snowy owls often hunt in the daytime, according to the Defenders of Wildlife organization. This makes them diurnal, or animals that are active during the day. A capable predator, the snowy owls' diet mainly consists of lemmings — a lot of lemmings. In fact, a family of snowy owls can eat up to 1,500 lemmings before the fledglings fly off, as explained by World of Owls.   These birds are fast and tough. Snowy owls can fly fast enough to knock over a grown human, as noted by National Geographic. POLAR BEARS Reuters/Mathieu Belanger Polar bears and the Arctic region go together perfectly. In fact, the word arctic is derived from the ancient Greek word for bear, _arktos_, according to Polar Bears International. This is why you’ll only find polar bears in the Arctic region, but not the Antarctic (which translates to "opposite of the bear"). Their sense of smell is super impressive. A polar bear can smell a seal underneath water and snow from nearly a half mile away, according to the World Wildlife Fund For Nature. Even if the seal is beneath three feet of snow, the bear can still sniff out its presence. BEARDED SEALS Shutterstock Bearded seals smash their heads through thin ice to create breathing holes, as noted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. These seals can sing. Well, sort of; male bearded seals perform underwater vocalizations in order to attract females during mating season, according to Wildscreen Arkive. If this bearded seal call YouTube video from Christianne White is any indication, the sound is eerie and hauntingly beautiful. SEE THE REST OF THE STORY AT BUSINESS INSIDER

Scientists found accessible ice sheets on Mars, and it could be a 'game-changer' for colonizing the planet

[Mars]NASA via AP * NASA SCIENTISTS DISCOVERED EIGHT INSTANCES OF ICE EXPOSED ON THE MARTIAN SURFACE. * WHILE SCIENTISTS HAVE LONG KNOWN ABOUT THE RED PLANET'S SUB-SURFACE ICE SHEETS, THIS IS THE FIRST TIME ICE HAS BEEN SEEN EXPOSED AND EASILY ACCESSIBLE. * THE ICE COULD BE A "GAME-CHANGER" FOR HUMAN EXPLORATION AND EVENTUAL SETTLEMENT ON THE RED PLANET.  -------------------------   There may be a major source of easily accessible drinkable water on Mars, according to a new study in the journal _Science_.  Using images from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which has been orbiting the planet since 2006, scientists working with the space agency discovered ice sheets that are relatively pure and partially exposed on the Martian surface. Scientists have long known about the existence of subsurface ice on the red planet and about major ice deposits on its frigid poles. But they hadn't seen exposed ice on other parts of the planet's surface before. The newly discovered ice deposits are thick sheets just under the Martian surface, and parts of the sheets are exposed in eight sites on steep slopes up to 100 meters tall.  Shane Byrne, a planetary scientist at the University of Arizona and one of the study's authors, told Reuters the discovery a potential "game-changer" for human exploration of Mars. [Mars ice]NASA/JPL-Caltech/UA/USGS/Handout "Here we have what we think is almost pure water ice buried just below the surface. You don’t see a high-tech solution," Byrne said. "You can go out with a bucket and shovel and just collect as much water as you need." The scientists believe the ice is consolidated snow that was deposited relatively recently in geologic terms.  The exposed portions of ice are located at mid-latitudes, where the temperatures are a bit balmier for humans and robots to operate. Other ice that exists at these latitudes is covered by layers of Martian dust, or regolith. Those layers of loose rock make the sub-surface ice extremely difficult to access, Colin Dundas, the study's leader and a geologist with the US Geological Survey’s Astrogeology Science Center, told Reuters.  "Previous ideas for extracting human-usable water from Mars were to pull it from the very dry atmosphere or to break down water-containing rocks," Byrne said. But because these newly discovered ice deposits are so much more accessible, they could aid the foundation of a permanent Mars base — or at least, could support future missions to study the planet.
