Triplets Feeding on Same Placenta Born in Crete, 1 in 100,000 Doctors Say
Three baby boys feeding on the same placenta were born on the island of Crete in Greece early this morning, prompting doctors to comment on the rarity of the case. According to doctors, it is rare to have triplets in three different amniotic sacs, feeding on the same placenta. They claim that this happens once in every 100,000 pregnancy cases. The 33-year-old mother gave birth to the triplets early this morning. All three are healthy and they weigh between 1,200 and 1,400 grams. According to creteplus, the woman was hospitalized in the Iraklio University Hospital and doctors were monitoring her case, fearing that there might be complications. Obstetrician Stavros Sifakis, who was responsible for monitoring the woman’s pregnancy, said that he was there to monitor the possibility that one of the fetuses was “stealing” placenta blood from the others. He said that in many such cases, one fetus feeds more and the others are not developing as they should, thus generating serious pregnancy complications and most likely miscarriage. Dr. Sifakis said that it is a rare case of a “monozygotic, monochorionic, triamnionic pregnancy.” The woman’s gynaecologist and the clinic director delivered the babies via caesarean section even though the pregnancy was 30 weeks along. The triplets were born prematurely but are healthy, the doctors said.

London Court of Appeals to Decide on Antonia Ilia’s Extradition
A London court of appeals will decide within the next few weeks whether former Greek judge Antonia Ilia will be extradited to Greece. The case was heard yesterday at the British court and the hearing lasted six hours. Ilia was not present at the courtroom as her defense attorney stated that his client was unable to attend due to eye problems. The verdict will be announced within the next few weeks. Ilia has appealed on the grounds that she is seeking political asylum since her life is in danger if she is extradited and she also stated that the conditions of incarceration in the Greek prison system is inappropriate. A written statement by Greek Justice Minister Charalambos Athanasiou was presented in court stating that Ilia will be incarcerated in the new wing for female inmates in Korydallos prison that meets all international standards. Professor of Law Nikolaos Koulouris testified via video link that the statement of the minister is a political promise and it has no legal grounds since it is the prison board that decides where to place inmates. He also said that conditions in Greek prisons change constantly, so the minister’s promise is not guaranteed. Law professor Konstantinos Tsitselikis also testified via video link and said that Greek prison conditions are not appropriate since there is a shortage of staff and prisons are overcrowded. The former judge has been a fugitive from Greek justice since 2005, when she was charged for judicial corruption. The charges include fraud, money laundering, slandering and failure to declare her assets for taxation. Ilia was arrested In Brighton, in May 2011, after the Greek authorities had issued five European warrants against her. She was placed in custody in Holloway prison where she remained for 19 months. After repeated appeals, she was released in December 2012. Greek and British authorities have cancelled four of the five warrants against Ilia and the former judge believes that the fifth will be cancelled as well. She claims that her extradition will be illegal, if it is carried out.

Human Representations Found in Amphipolis Tomb Epistyle
The human representations on the epistyle of the Amphipolis tomb found today, prompted Culture Minister Contanstinos Tasoulas to speak of “an unparalleled burial monument,” that has “the whole world in awe.” The Greek minister visited the Casta hill excavation site today to see the new findings and to be briefed on the progress of the project. A press conference followed the minister’s briefing, where Mr. Tasoulas said that “Amphipolis is an exercise in wonderment and patience.” In his official visit to the site, the culture minister was accompanied by head of excavation project Katerina Peristeri, General Secretary of Culture Lina Mendoni, Amfipolis tomb Press manager Anna Panagiotarea and Substitute Interior Minister Theofilos Leontaridis. Mr. Tasoulas said that the main priority now is to preserve what has been found so far and continue with the geophysical survey of the tomb area. Meanwhile, the archaeologists’ crew is continuing excavations on the hill in order to discover more structures and objects. The human representations on the epistyle of the third chamber will be cleaned first and then they will be studied using laser techniques. The culture minister said that people in Greece and around the world should be patient because the cleaning and the study of the findings is a laborious and time-consuming process that requires patience. He said that the project has now entered the scientific stage, where the findings will be studied in laboratories and experts will determine their origin and importance. Archaeologists, geologists, historians, and other scientists will work in unison on the project that the Greek official estimated will take up to five years to be completed.

Lawyers Extend Strike Against New Civil Procedure Code to Dec. 5
Greek lawyers will extend their November 19 three-day strike against the amendments to the Civil Procedure Code from November 25 to December 5, they said on Friday. The amendments were submitted to Parliament in a bill by Justice, Transparency and Human Rights Minister Charalambos Athanassiou. The bar associations said the bill once passed will exacerbate the delays for case processing in courts and cause serious problems. The lawyers also decided to hold a national referendum among the 63 bar associations on December 2 and 3 on whether to accept the new Code and further steps to be taken. Judges will halt court proceedings for a few minutes at all administrative courts from November 24 to December 19, the Administrative Judges Association (EDD) decided on Friday, in protest over several issues including the state of the judiciary system, amendments to the Civil Procedure Code and back pay they are owed. Athens Shooting: Gunman Opens Fire at Piraeus Bar, Injures 11
Eleven people were injured Saturday morning when a man stood outside the glass windows of a Piraeus bar and started shooting randomly with a Kalashnikov assault rifle and then fled the scene. It was 4:15 on Saturday morning and the bar on Dilaveri coast in Piraeus was full people when the man stood outside the bar and opened fire at customers and staff with a rifle. Then he walked into the vestibule and continued to fire, according to a witness. Eleven people suffered gun wounds and have been hospitalized. The man left the scene. According to witnesses, the man was a foreigner and when he stood outside the bar with the gun, he shouted, “I will kill you all! Today there will be blood!” The man opened fire injuring people and shattering the glass windows amidst screams. After the shooting, the man ran out of the bar. Another witness said who was nearby said that he left with a taxi. All victims were under 30 years old. Four of them were carried to Evangelismos hospital in Athens, and the other seven to Attikon hospital to receive treatment. According to police reports, four of them have more serious bullet wounds and they will be operated on. The bar owner said that the man was in the bar earlier and that he left at around 4:00 am after paying for the three drinks he had. Police authorities believe that the perpetrator was the same man who had recently opened fire with a Kalashnikov rifle at a night club in Metaxourgeio, Athens, Greece — where a 44-year-old man was killed — and a coffee shop in Aghios Panteleimonas. Allegedly, police also has the picture of the suspect.
