Bernie Ecclestone: A Grand Prix in Austerity-hit Greece Could Be on the Horizon
A grand prix in austerity-hit Greece could be on the horizon, according to Formula One mogul Bernie Ecclestone, CNN reported. Ecclestone’s company Formula One Licensing has already trademarked the ‘Formula 1 Mediterranean Grand Prix’ on May 30. “The Greeks are keen,” Ecclestone said. “They want me to go and see the Prime Minister or the mayor,” he added, noting that “We will have to find out if they have got any money.” The sum required for hosting a grand prix would require a total investment of around $1 billion in order to build a track and cover the Formula One hosting fee, which typically runs for 10 years. According to the report, private investors have visited places in the municipality of Keratsini-Drapetsona that could host a track. One of the area’s biggest attractions is cheap land prices. As the report points out, Greece staged very successful Olympic Games but the legacy from the games was bitter, as many of the venues were abandoned and are now derelict and dilapidated. A Mediterranean Grand Prix in Greece was first rumored in 2006 by Autosport magazine when it was suggested that the race could be rotated between a number of circuits, starting with Valencia in 2008 and then Paul Ricard in France the year after.

Manolas is an immediate replacement for Morocco defender Mehdi Benatia, whom Roma sold to Bayern Munich in a deal reported at €26 million ($34 million), also on Tuesday. Roma has conceded 11 goals in nine preseason friendlies and Garcia had recently expressed concern entering the final week of the transfer market. Unified Property Tax To Be Paid in 6 Installments
The unified property tax known as ENFIA will be paid in six installments. The decision was made at a broad meeting chaired by Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras with the participation of Government Vice-President Evangelos Venizelos, Finance Minister Gikas Hardouvelis and Alternate Finance Minister Christos Staikouras. The first installment is due on September 30 and the final installment on February 28, 2015. The Finance Ministry is expected to proceed with corrections to property prices in 4,000 areas, so that their taxable value can be calculated at a more reasonable rate. Any hopes fostered last week that there would be a 25%-30% discount in the ENFIA payments were dashed due time shortage and dubious financial results that would spell a shortfall of 100 million euros for state coffers. According to sources, homeowners of the earthquake stricken island of Cephalonia will be excluded from this tax. “Everything is under control,” Venizelos said at his doorstep statement after a meeting with Samaras. Samaras and Venizelos had a separate private meeting, during which they decided the changes for the anti-racism bill to be tabled in parliament next week, according to sources. A new meeting between the two men has been scheduled for Wednesday to decide on the stance Greece will hold in the negotiations with the Troika of international lenders.
Inspector General Rakintzis Accuses Politicians For Breaking Their Own Rules
Greece’s Inspector General of Public Administration Leandros Rakintzis accused politicians for adopting rules that they, themselves, break. Speaking to media, Rakintzis reported the case of seven shops in the region of Schinias. The shops have been illegally built on the seashore and should be demolished by law. However, an amendment was passed delaying their demolition for several months. Furthermore, referring to sending teachers to schools in outlying regions, the Inspector General said that some school principals deliberately form small classes, less than the 25 students per class rule, thus requiring more teachers to meet the instructional hours. “So we fought unemployment but raised the cost, and funds have run out,” Rakintzis said, adding that it is a typical example of resources mismanagement which could be used for development. He further added that while there are some schools with not enough teachers, in other units the number of teachers exceeds the number of students.

Record of Containers at Piraeus Port in July
A record number of containers were processed in July at Terminal 1, which is run by the Piraeus Port Authority (OLP). A total of 50,517 containers were handled during a single month, a record in OLP’s history. Management also revealed that productivity at Terminal 1 has increased by about 40% since 2009, with 161 containers now being processed each shift rather than 115. Chinese firm COSCO operates container handling terminals 2 and 3. The data were provided to journalists as the MSC London arrived at the port. It is the largest cargo ship to have docked in Piraeus, measuring 399 meters in length and the capacity to carry 16,652 containers. Greek Merchant Marine Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis visited the port and said that Piraeus now has the ability to compete with the best ports in the Mediterranean. (source: ANSA)

Greeks Sailing by the Stars
The sun (Helios) was the divine king of the sky for the Greeks. According to the "Homeric Hymn" of Helios: The sun shines his light on both men and immortal gods by driving his four-horse "golden-yoked" chariot across the sky from east to west. Selene, sister of Helios, was also very important to the Greeks. According to the "Homeric Hymn" praising Selene: "From her immortal head a heaven-sent glow envelopes the Earth... her rays turn night to noon... [The] manes [of her horses] play with the evening, dividing the months. Her great orbit is full and as she waxes a most brilliant light appears in the sky." Sappho, c.620-c.556 BCE, poetess of Lesbos, hymned Selene: "The glow and beauty of the stars," she said, "are nothing compared to splendid Selene when, in her roundness, she burns silver about the world." The Greeks knew that neither humans nor nature could survive without the warmth and light of the sun. The sun ripened their crops. The light of the moon was the light of the sun that bathed the moon. In addition, Helios was an important god, usually associated with the son of Zeus, Apollo, god of light, healing, music, archery and prophecy. Plato traced the meaning of the name Helios from the Dorian Greeks who, convinced that Helios brought people together at its rising, gave Helios a name, Halios, meaning the gathering of people observing the rising of the sun. Plato also explained that the name of Selene came from selas (bright light) and phos (light). The third or fourth century novelist Heliodoros considered himself "of the line of the descendants of Helios." He worshipped Helios and Selene: "the purest and brightest of the gods." Atlas, like Helios, was one of the first gods that made a direct contribution to the cosmogony, cosmology and astronomy of the Greeks. He was a Titan, one of the pre-Olympian gods, children of Gaia (Earth) and Uranos (sky). His name means one who endures or carries. He was the guardian of the pillars that held up the sky. Another tradition has Atlas sustaining more than the heavens. According to the Roman architect and engineer of the first century BCE, Vitruvius Pollio, Atlas taught mankind "the sun's course and the revolutions of the moon and all the stars." Indeed, according to the Greek historian Diodoros, who was a contemporary to Vitruvius, Atlas was the founder of science. He perfected astrology and established astronomical science. He invented the movement of the heavens and taught that the stars and the heavens have the shape of spheres. He also wrote the first astronomical textbook. These reasons led people to believe that Atlas supported the entire cosmos on his shoulders. Atlas met Herakles and educated him in the science of the heavens, passing on to him all that he knew about astronomy. Herakles then brought that knowledge to Greece. Thus, Herakles won the affection of the Greeks for his courage and enlightenment. He became a philosopher and a scientist who opened the heavens to them. Atlas married Pleione, daughter of the Ocean. She gave birth to seven daughters at Kyllene in Arkadia of Peloponnesos. These girls took their mother's name and became the Pleiades. Zeus made love to these women. For example, out of the union of Zeus with Maia came the messenger of the gods, Hermes. After Zeus and the Olympian gods overthrew the Titans from running the universe, Zeus placed the seven daughters of Atlas in the constellation Pleiades (Πλειαδες from πλεω, which means "to sail" probably because the Pleiades rise at the beginning of the sailing season). Both Homer and Hesiod mention the Pleiades. The god of metallurgy and technology, Hephaistos, puts the constellation of the seven sisters on the shield of Achilleus. The moment goddess Kalypso allows Odysseus to leave her island, Odysseus keeps looking at the Pleiades as his guide to finding his home island Ithaca. As for Hesiod, the Pleiades mean the start of the harvest. The Hyades may have also been daughters of Atlas. The name Hyades, Υαδες, comes from the verb υω, which means sending rain; so the constellation Hyades is related to the raining season. The other major constellation at Homer's time, Arcturus (Αρκτουρος), the Bear or Ursa Major is also known as Bootes (Βοωτης), plowman or a farmer using a bullock, cow, bull or ox to cultivate the land, especially the grape vine, a gift of Dionysos, son of Zeus. Dionysos honored his earliest follower Ikarios, his daughter, Erigone, and their dog, Maira. Dionysos put Ikarios in the constellation Bootes. Next to Bootes, Dionysos placed Erigone as Virgo and Maira as Canis Minor, the Lesser Dog. Ikarios planted the grape vine of Dionysos and made wine. He gave some of that wine to some farmers who got drunk and killed him. As a result Erigone hanged herself and Maira drowned himself. These deaths infuriate Dionysos. He spread madness among Athenian women who hanged themselves. The oracle at Delphi explained to the Athenians the cause of the deaths and they hanged the shepherds who murdered Ikarios. The Athenians also honored Dionysos with an annual grape festival they called Aiora, Swinging. Girls swung from ropes tied to trees. Isaac Newton tried to date the events of ancient history with astronomical calculations. He studied Greek mythology and he convinced himself that most of the constellations represented persons and events before the Argonaut expedition. He assigned the invention of constellations and first heavenly sphere among the Greeks to Cheiron the Centaur, teacher of the greatest Greek heroes, including Herakles. He studied Greek astronomers. He said Cheiron built the "primitive" sphere in 939 BCE for the Argonauts' perilous journey to Kolchis for the recovery of the Golden Fleece. Newton also believed that one of the Argonauts, Mousaios, constructed a heavenly sphere on which he painted the constellations of Cheiron to guide the Argonauts "sail by the stars."

Greek Police Crack Down Facebook Child Pornography Ring
The Cyber Crime Unit of the Greek Police cracked down a child pornography ring in Greece after receiving complaints by a 12-year-old girl. The perpetrators acted through Facebook. Investigation began after the girl filed a complaint stating that people she didn’t know had contacted her through Facebook, under the pretext that they would offer her work as a model. The perpetrators initially asked the girl to give them personal information and then asked her to make a Skype video call in order to see her and tell her if she is suitable for the job. A few days later, they told the girl she was hired and asked her to pose for indecent pictures. When the girl reacted, they started threatening her and her family, telling her that she would face penal sanctions if she didn’t obey to their commands. To crack the case, qualified personnel of the Cyber Crime Unit carried out a detailed digital analysis. The investigation identified the IP addresses of the perpetrators in Pakistan and the Philippines. According to information, the child pornography ring has managed to trap 10 Greek children, including the 12-year-old from northern Greece whose parents filed the complaint. Police is investigating the possibility of the ring convincing the 10 underaged girls to take their clothes off on Skype and take indecent pictures, while at the same time, pedophiles on the other side of the world have paid a large amount of money in order to see them online. According to the same information, some Greek-Americans are part of the group that ordered the child pornography ring to find underaged Greek girls.

The 11 Best Dog Breeds
Dogs are the best. Incredibly loyal, they comfort, protect, and love their humans unconditionally, making dogs superior to any other pet out there. But not all dogs are created equal. In celebration of National Dog Day, we ranked the 11 best dog breeds, based on factors including health, personality, and overall popularity. 11. Portuguese Water Dogs Portuguese water dogs were originally bred to herd fish, retrieve lost tackle or broken nets, and act as couriers from ship to shore. They’re good for people with allergies and make excellent companions since they are loving, independent, intelligent, and easy to train. Portuguese water dogs also enjoy being petted and are friendly with strangers. Just be warned that like many larger dogs, boredom can cause them to become destructive. 10. Newfoundland Dogs Known as “nature’s babysitter,” Newfoundland Dogs are the absolute sweetest. Perhaps the best-known Newfoundland is the fictional Nana from “Peter Pan,” who was so wonderful with children. These gentle giants are highly loyal and easy to train, and are legendary for their docile temper. Newfoundland dogs are also strong swimmers, and the breed was trained to rescue people from drowning — one dog even famously saved Napoleon Bonaparte. 9. Maltese One of the most ancient of the toy breeds, Maltese dogs were bred to be sweet and adoring of their owners. The Greeks even erected tombs for their Maltese dogs, and in Elizabethan times, they were called “The Comforter” because it was believed they could relieve pain and cure illness. Maltese dogs are also extremely hypoallergenic, with silky coats that don’t shed. And because of their size, these dogs are good for apartment living, too. 8. Golden Retrievers Goldens are sweet, loyal, and incredible companion dogs. They’d rather be sleeping at your feet then running around outside without you. They’re also very even-tempered, especially with small children. Goldens make great service and comfort dogs because of their friendly and tolerant attitudes. Plus they were bred to retrieve ducks and other fowl for hunters, so if you like playing fetch, this is the dog for you. 7. Huskies Siberian huskies are stunning animals, with their thick fur coat and piercing eyes. Most people who choose a Husky do so for their extraordinary beauty. Huskies are good natured dogs who are affectionate with children. They shed minimally, except for twice a year when they blow out their coat, and don’t have the typical “dog odor” that bigger breeds tend to have. Huskies are not considered a great breed for first-time dog owners, since they need a lot of attention, exercise, and are very good as escaping and running away. 6. Poodles Poodles get a bad rap. But they’re easy to train since they’re so intelligent, and are lively, fun-loving, and loyal family dogs. Poodles can be attention seekers, so don’t be surprised if this people-oriented breed is constantly with you. They’re also protective of their families and homes, and can become aggressive with people outside the family or with other dogs. 5. Beagles Because of their intelligence, Beagles are used by law enforcement at airports to sniff baggage for items that are not permitted. Due to their friendly nature and appearance, Beagles don’t worry passengers. This breed also has a lack of inherited health problems, and an even temper which is good for families and small children. The most common reason Beagles are abandoned or turned over to the pound is because their owners couldn’t stand their howling. This can be controlled by training your dog early to avoid excessive barking. 4. German Shepherds A relatively new breed (they date back to 1899), German Shepherds are exceptional animals: Courageous, obedient, incredibly loyal, and eager to learn. German Shepherds are very intelligent too, and excel at most anything they’re trained to do. They’re usually used as service dogs and police dogs to protect officers and locate drugs or human remains. German Shepherds love their humans so much that they will suffer from separation anxiety, and can become destructive when bored alone at home. 3. Pembroke Welsh Corgis Corgis have a cult-like following mainly due to their playful and sweet personalities. According to Welsh mythology, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi was even the transportation mode of choice for fairies. Though they can be shy with strangers, Corgis are good with children and have a strong desire to please their owners. They’re also one of the silliest-looking dogs, with huge ears, a long torso, and a big butt. Just monitor their food intake closely since this breed is prone to overeating. 2. Labrador Retrievers There’s a reason why Labs are the most popular breed in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, as well as here in the U.S. They are devoted and obedient and have even temperaments that make them good with both children and other animals. Bred to be eager to please and playful companions, Labs are smart and commonly chosen as guide dogs and service dogs for blind or autistic individuals. They also make understanding therapy dogs, and can be trained to aid law enforcement and other official agencies by screening and detection work. 1. Mixed Breeds No matter what mix of breeds, mutts are awesome. Mixed-breeds are believed to have less genetically inherited health problems than purebreds, according to veterinarian Dr. Sarah Ward Fatula. Plus, if you adopt your mixed-breed from the shelter, not only will they already be spayed/neutered, microchipped, and up to date with vaccines, but you’ll also be helping with the pet overpopulation problem. To find a shelter near you, visit the ASPCA’s website. SEE ALSO: The 10 Most Heroic Dogs Of All Time DON'T FORGET: Follow us on Facebook! Join the conversation about this story »
