According to a nationwide opinion poll conducted by Interview on behalf of northern Greece’s Vergina TV on January 9 and 11 on a sample of […] The post Poll Shows ND-SYRIZA Gap Narrowing appeared first on The National Herald.

University of Athens Rector: If SYRIZA Wins, Education Will Return to ‘Black Era’

University of Athens rector and parliamentary candidate Theodoros Fortsakis referred to the honor he has been given by New Democracy, which chose him to lead the party’s State ballot. Furthermore, Fortsakis thanked the ruling party for giving him the opportunity to express his opinion and commented on the country’s present situation. Clarifying he is not a member of New Democracy, Fortsakis highlighted that Greeks are “at a stage in which a battle is conducted that will be really decisive for the country’s future.” In addition, the rector, who has been in a long dispute with the university’s students due to his controversial decisions regarding the guarding of the institution’s central facilities and other “hot” issues, characterized the education’s open issues as part of the wider political problem Greece is currently facing. “I feel that the university’s best defense can now be achieved from a political rather than an academic ‘step.’ The university’s institutional strengthening is a priority for me, something that can no longer be achieved by the campus,” he underlined, justifying his choice to be involved in politics, while he clearly attacked SYRIZA for its proclaimed education program. “If SYRIZA wins (the elections), their Education program will take us back to the university’s dark era,” Fortsakis highlighted, referring to the transaction status’ restoration. Fortsakis was among those who opposed the administrative staff strikes and has been in open conflict with University of Athens students on the issue of guarding its buildings by private security employees, financed by the institution. His decision led to numerous pan-educational demonstrations on November and December 2014.

New York Times: Greece Will Race Against Time After Elections

The possibility of a bank run is a danger that Greece is facing if leftist SYRIZA wins the January 25 elections, according to a New York Times report. SYRIZA leads the polls and most likely will form a coalition government with another party. The new leftist government will have to renegotiate with the Troika of international creditors, demanding a generous debt haircut and ease the imposed austerity measures. At the same time, they promise Greeks more government spending. Analysts estimate that a SYRIZA government will eventually back down and accept the creditors’ decisions. However, until that happens, there is a serious risk that depositors might panic. Since Germany is not afraid that a Grexit will be contagious for the rest of the Eurozone, it can maintain its hard stance for a while. At the same time, Berlin is worried that if they cut Greece some slack, there might be political repercussions with Italy and France asking for the same. The report said that creditors will not agree to the debt haircut or the generous government spending so “the obvious compromise is to fix the interest rate at extremely low levels and extend the grace period before any loan has to be repaid.” If SYRIZA refuses to compromise and defaults on bailout payments, the European Central Bank (ECB) may cut liquidity to Greek banks and depositors will make a bank run. Also, since Greece has not received the bailout program’s last tranche, it may run out of funds by the end of February. If there was a bank run without a safety net, SYRIZA’s only option would be to impose capital controls. Greece will then have to beg its creditors for mercy and SYRIZA would have to bring back the drachma, the report said. A compromise is absolutely necessary. The Eurozone creditors and the moderate parts of the leftist party should work out a plan that will extend the bailout program. “After all, it is in nobody’s interest for Greece to be driven out of the euro,” the article concluded.

SYRIZA Leader Tsipras Promises Restoration of Returnee Expatriates’ Pensions

With the representatives of Pontian and Northern Epirus expatriates Federations met earlier today Greek main opposition SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras along with the party’s MPs Panagiotis Lafazanis, Dimitris Stratoulis, Panagiotis Kourouplis and Alexis Mitropoulos. Among others, Tsipras committed to restore the returnee expatriates’ pensions that have been cut, as he highlighted, by the coalition government of Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and government Vice President and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos. “SYRIZA, as a wide, left, democratic and patriotic force, sees an integral part of Hellenism in the face of the emigrants – refugees of our country. It is committed to support expatriates with all its power and above all it is committed to restore the greatest injustice they have been subjected to by the Samaras – Venizelos administration; the ruinous cut of the meager pension of thousands of expatriates,” Tsipras highlighted during the meeting, adding that this commitment is among those measures announced in Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF), for the restoration of the ongoing humanitarian crisis. “A country with millions of unemployed, homeless and people living in indignity is not a European country. It is a country that runs down to the standard of living of the third world. That is the reality. And I want to point out that the Thessaloniki program is not negotiable,” Tsipras said, explaining that the so-called “Thessaloniki program,” which will be based on national resources, has been carefully planned, giving priority to social issues and is based on the country’s current capabilities. “Also, there is a second dimension on the issue; the moral one. All these years, we know that the people who returned from the former USSR are among the most progressive and creative elements of Greek society. They are people of moil who live on their savings and have never caused any problems to Greek society. We consider it our duty – a national and patriotic duty – to help for their final integration in the social and national body,” Tsipras concluded.

Olympiacos Crowned First Round Champions (Standings and Top Scorers)

Olympiakos is named the first round’s champions of the Greek SuperLeague, an accomplishment that in reality has no effect besides irritating the rest of the league´s clubs. Throughout the whole season Olympiakos’ inconsistency has let PAOK sit in first place. The Thessalonians deservingly stood atop of the league as they played spectacular football tipping opponents with four and five goals at times but the result would have been entirely different if the 2014 Champions took their games more seriously. With the sack of Michel and just as matchday 17 ended, the reds beat Skoda Ksanthi 1-3 and regained top spot as PAOK lost its third in six games and dropped two points below them. At the same time, Panathinaikos sitting at third place, reminded us of his early 00´s team when at halftime was already up 5-0 against Ergotelis. Marcus Berg’s return in the starting eleven gave the greens the moral elevation they badly needed and with a hat-trick lead the greens to an outstanding result, last seen by them in 2002 when they beat Panachaiki 8-0 (5-0 at halftime). A few points below at fourth place we meet Asteras Tripolis, a club which less than a decade ago was hopping between amateur and semi-amateur divisions and now is silently luring at the championship trophy. Asteras demolished PAOK in Tripoli (3-0) in a game which the black and whites have massive complaints about the referee’s decisions and rightly so in our opinion. However, it’s a common secret that PAOK has been unable to sustain the pressure of first place and in addition to its weak bench is now deflating its hopes to win their first trophy since 2003 (Greek Cup). In the first time in ages, Olympiakos has been easily dropping points home and away something unrecognizable for the Greek champions. As a result, the championship battle has turned into an interesting scramble in which PAOK, Panathinaikos and Asteras are lurking, waiting for the moment that the reds will lose their might. Here's What Students Learned In The Infamous Dartmouth Sports Ethics Class Where Dozens Cheated

There is a distinct irony in dozens of students in a class full of athletes cheating in a course on sports ethics. That's the situation at Dartmouth College, where 64 students were accused of cheating in a course called "Sports, Ethics, and Religion." Students allegedly used wireless handheld clickers that were registered to absent students to make it seem like their missing peers were answering questions in class. Attendance and participation make up 15% of a student's grade in the course, student newspaper The Dartmouth reported in November. The local Valley News newspaper reports that Dartmouth has suspended "most" of the accused students for a semester. Dartmouth religion professor Randall Balmer has said he initially designed the course to help student-athletes who may have trouble keeping up with the workload at the Ivy League college. Close to 70% of the 272 students enrolled in "Sports, Ethics, and Religion" last semester were Dartmouth varsity athletes, The Dartmouth reports, including more than half of the football, men's hockey, and men's basketball teams. Balmer — who also taught the course — lectured on topics such as fanatical fans, the origins of various sports, and "muscular Christianity." Students were responsible for mid-term and final exams, as well as writing a five- to seven-page book review for their final paper. Here's the course description included in the syllabus: A survey of the origins and development of the culture of athletic competition in America, with roots in the Greek athletic ideal and in the "Muscular Christianity" movement of nineteenth-century England. We'll examine the peculiar (religious?) passion that Americans invest in sports as well as the role that sports has played as an engine for social change. We look, finally, at some of the ethical issues surrounding organized sports. The class also included three debates that all enrolled students participated in — on college athlete compensation, politically correct mascots, and sports venues funded by taxpayers. A Dartmouth spokesperson sent Business Insider the following statement: The Academic Honor Principle is a foundational element of a Dartmouth education. The integrity and excellence of that experience require trust between our faculty and students. For this reason we treat all academic honor code violations as major misconduct. The actions of a group of students for possible violations of the honor principle relating to misrepresentation of class attendance and participation are under judicial review. January 25 Elections will Cost €60 Million

The elections of January 25th are expected to cost over 45 million euros, excluding the cost of the remuneration of Greek police, estimated at 15 million. The finance ministry asked the ministry of interior to cut election costs as much as possible, following a request of 50 million euros. After negotiations, the finance ministry finally approved 45 million euros, according to Kathimerini daily. The ministry of interior said the May 2012 elections cost 42.7 million euros. The cost of remuneration to the ministry of public order for 2012 was 15 million euros. The cost of this year’s elections will be close to that amount minus an estimated 10 percent. This year there will be less polling stations, meaning less electoral representatives, less polls and screens. The ministry expects to save 4.7 million from the last two alone. Also, it is reported, the ministry is considering not to advertise the January 25 elections, thus saving a further 1.3 million euros. The bulk of the cost is for legal representatives and the staff preparing the elections and working in the polling stations. It is estimated at 38 million euros this year. The cost of legal representatives, the staff preparing the election procedures and those working in polling stations amounted to 24 million in 2012, according to the report. The ministry of interior is planning to hire a part-time staff of 50 to help in the electoral process with an estimated total pay of 18,000. The paper ordered for ballots will cost the Greek state 1,452,356.33. There will be 13 million envelopes for the ballots and will cost 254,118 euros. The 35,000 ballot sacks ordered will cost 16,254.45 euros and the private trucks hired to transport the electoral material will cost another 54,120 euros.
