Unclear strategy has everyone puzzled
The government says it wants an honorable compromise with the creditors, who are in turn demanding a credible reform list. However, the distance separating the two sides remains large as the progress in negotiations is slow, allowing the ugly scenarios of default and “Grexit” to be assigned higher probabilities by analysts and others. The end of this standoff will depend on the government’s intentions, strategy and cash reserves and the stance of the official creditors. At this point, the impasse looks set to continue despite Greece’s pressing liquidity needs.
Social security problem is due to general economic issues
Only a growth shock could save the Greek social security system: Even after the interventions of the last five years in terms of retirement age limits, pension levels, expenditure cuts and distortion corrections, which resulted in savings of some 14 billion euros per annum, the system is again ailing.
President Pavlopoulos: Greece’s Path Lies Through Europe
President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos underlined on Sunday that Greece’s place is in Europe, in statements after visiting the home of late Greek statesman and former Greek President Constantine Karamanlis in Serres, northern Greece. “Our path is within Europe and this is the road we will travel, and travel victoriously,” he said at Karamanlis’ home. “We are called on today to complete Constantine Karamanlis’ European vision.” The Greek President noted that the country has to travel this path with the other Europeans and act together to “fix” Europe so that it returns to its original values. Referring to the former statesman, he cited Karamanlis’ example and dedication to democracy, duty and to serving the public interest and unity during difficult times and in major decisions “beyond and outside sterile party conflicts.” Earlier, Pavlopoulos had attended a service led by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I at Agios Nikitas church in the city of Serres. After the ceremony, the Patriarch said that the President’s name will always be in the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s prayers and expressed hope that when he next returns to Greece, the crisis will be overcome. The Greek President also visited flood-stricken areas while he will attend an official luncheon held in honor of himself and the Ecumenical Patriarch. (source: ana-mpa)

Progress in Greece’s Negotiation with Creditors
There are signs of positive developments in the negotiations between Greece and creditors’ representatives that started again yesterday in Paris. The Greek government’s aim to achieve a primary surplus of 1.2% in 2015 seems to be accepted by creditors. Furthermore, an emergency Euro Working Group (EWG) session via teleconference is scheduled for Wednesday in order to discuss the Greek issue. This is progress ahead of the April 24 Eurogroup, according to a source close to the Greek side. In Saturday’s meeting the two sides discussed macroeconomics, fiscal projections and the primary surplus. The Greek side insisted on a 1.2% primary surplus, something that the other side seems willing to accept, or a number close to it in worst case scenario, according to the source. In Sunday’s meeting the Brussels Group discussed labor law and social security issues. The source told Greek television that the two sides were cooperative and convened with the common goal to find a middle ground in negotiations and come to an honest compromise that will benefit and satisfy both. He also expressed his optimism that there might be an agreement in the April 24 Eurogroup.

Golden Dawn Trial Begins Monday in Greece
Dozens of Greeks linked to the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party will go on trial on Monday with charges of participating in a criminal organization. The highly publicized trial will be held inside a high security prison in Athens and is expected to last for months. Golden Dawn leader Nikos Michaloliakos and 68 others will stand in front of a three-judge panel. Among the 69 defendants are the vast majority of the party’s MPs, party members and police officers. They will claim that their prosecution, arrest and detention are politically biased. Golden Dawn came third in Greece’s January 25 elections, gathering 6.28% of the total vote, and secured 17 seats in the Greek Parliament. Most of the accused face charges of membership in a criminal organization, while others are accused of murder, conspiracy to murder, possession of weapons and racist violence, facing sentences of up to 20 years, if convicted. The investigation lasted 15 months and the state prosecutor’s office has gathered sufficient evidence. Prosecutors will now try to prove that the openly racist party operated as a criminal organization under a military-style leadership that allegedly encouraged the beating and killing of migrants and political opponents.
