Turkey to bridge the Dardanelles in new mega project
Istanbul (AFP) - Turkey is planning to build a bridge across the famed Dardanelles strait to help ease traffic congestion in Istanbul, a minister said, revealing the latest in a string of mega projects under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The straits, which separate Europe and Asia, were last bridged by Xerxes the Great, the Persian "king of kings" in 480 BC on his way to defeat the Greeks at Thermopylae."We are planning to construct a new bridge across the Dardanelles strait," Transport Minister Lutfi Elvan said in an interview with Turkish television late Thursday. The Dardanelles lead into the Sea of Marmara which then goes into the Bosphorus in Istanbul itself. The waterway is one of the world's busiest shipping lanes, and is 1.2 kilometres (0.75 miles) wide at its narrowest point. So far the Dardanelles strait can only be crossed by ferry. "We will turn the entire Marmara region into a ring road, so this ring system will ease the Istanbul traffic to a great extent," Elvan added. The Dardanelles, which played a key role in the great sea battles of ancient history, were also the site of one of the most famous battles of World War I when Ottoman troops resisted an invading Allied force. It was also where the founder of modern Turkey Mustafa Kemal, the man who would later become known as Ataturk, made his name as a heroic military leader.- 'Wildly excessive' -Turkey's Islamic-rooted government is under fire for its ambitious construction projects for the mega city of 16 million people, which critics have condemned as wildly excessive and damaging to the environment. The projects include a massive new Istanbul airport, a third road bridge across the Bosphorus, and a canal parallel to the waterway to ease the permanent bottleneck of tankers and freighters waiting to pass through it.Elvan said the government was keen on the third airport project, which is expected to cost over 10 billion euros ($12.5 billion), but declined to provide an exact time for the start of construction. The gigantic new hub could be named after Erdogan, he said in August.Erdogan, who once served as mayor of his home city of Istanbul, has proudly dubbed the pharaonic Canal Istanbul a "crazy project", boasting it could not even be compared to the Panama or Suez canals.Feasibility studies are still continuing for the project -- which will be between 45 and 50 kilometres (28 to 31 miles) long -- aimed at reducing shipping traffic in the Bosphorus, which has been the scene of several accidents and oil spills, said the minister.- Turkish space agency -Nor is the sky any longer the limit for the government's ambitions, with Turkey also working to create a homegrown space industry overseen by its own space agency, Elvan said."With the creation of a space agency, we will very rapidly activate the activities in this sphere," he said. The president has said the projects are needed to create a fast-developing and prosperous "new Turkey" that will be one of the world's top 10 economies by 2023.The building industry has boomed in recent years, but while Erdogan was prime minister his government was shaken by a now-stalled corruption probe into allegations of high-level bribery linked to some construction projects.Elvan vowed that the government would move ahead with mega projects, saying the government was planning a 17 billion Turkish lira ($7.6 billion/6 billion euros) investment in Istanbul. Among the new projects is a direct metro line from Kadikoy to the Sabiha Gokcen airport on the Asian side of Istanbul, he added.Last year amid great fanfare the government opened the first ever undersea metro link beneath the Bosphorus connecting the European and Asian sides of Istanbul. This year it opened the first high-speed train link between Istanbul and the capital Ankara.Join the conversation about this story »

Greek Opposition Spokesman: Elections Necessary as Soon as Possible
Greek main opposition SYRIZA party spokesman Panos Skourletis, speaking to “Parapolitika” radio station, repeated his party’s position regarding the general elections in Greece, which, as he underlined, should be held “as soon as possible.” “Whoever wants can be confused, but things are perfectly clear. It is necessary to go to elections as soon as possible. The current parliament is not entitled to elect the President of the Hellenic Republic,” Skourletis said. Regarding the ongoing negotiations between the Greek government and the Troika, SYRIZA’s spokesman characterized them as artificial and not substantial: “The Prime Minister gave the sign of hasty retreat before the Troika and has not, at the least, disputed the memorandum policies,” he said, adding that the first step towards the memorandum’s cancelation will be SYRIZA’s electoral win. “Everybody knows that when SYRIZA wins the elections, our lenders will start an essential negotiation. Discussion with our lenders is one thing and negotiation with the Troika is another,” Skourletis highlighted. In addition, he also shared his belief that the memorandum’s extension or the country’s exit to the markets is not a real dilemma, explaining that there currently is “a primary surplus to cover salaries and pensions, and the money borrowed are used for the repayment of loans.”

Measure for 100-Installment Tax Debt Settlements in Greek Government Gazette
A decision of the General Secretary for Public Revenue Aikaterini Savvaidou allowing the settlement of debts to the public sector in up to 100 installments, was published in the Greek Government Gazette on Friday. The decision calls for the mandatory inclusion in the measure of “the sum of certified overdue debts up to October 1, 2014, that have not been settled in a legal way by suspension of payment or facilitation or other legislative measures for the payment of debts by installments at the date of application.” The debtor is also able to include debts that are in “administrative or judicial or legal suspension” or certified overdue debts up to October 1, 2014, for which a settlement for payment in installments has already been made and whose terms are being observed. The changes relative to the previous decision are that it specifies that the debts to be included in the measure must not simply be certified but also overdue on October 1, thus excluding the Unified Property Tax (ENFIA) and the third installment of income tax. Students Clash with Police Outside Greek Education Ministry
Some 1,500 protesting students, parents and teachers gathered earlier today outside the Education Ministry in Athens, Greece, in order to protest against the government-planned education reforms. The protest rally ended with tension and at least two students were detained by Greek riot police squads, who made use of stun grenades when a group of protesters tried to storm the building, while no injuries were reported. The tension rose when a group of students from Athens’ secondary schools separated from the main demonstration and tried to climb the Ministry’s fence, while they also threw stones to riot police squads that were lined up in the building perimeter. The students were protesting, mostly peacefully, against the “new school” bill, which, amongst others, includes drastic changes to the exams process, the merging of schools, the exam topics pool, and teachers’ and textbooks’ shortages. This was not the first time students voiced their objection to the government’ plans for the education reforms this month, although it was the first time protesters gathered outside the Ministry building. After the clashes, that were not extended, a group of teachers formed a line between riot police and protesters, while they requested the immediate release of the detained students. In the meantime, students from higher education institutions gathered at Athens University’s Propylaea in downtown Athens, to demonstrate against government reforms.

Israel, Greece, Cyprus see a role in EU energy security
by Kostis Geropoulos JERUSALEM, Israel – Shifting geopolitical alliances have reinforced ties between Israel, Greece and Cyprus, strengthening Europe’s energy security. “We have improved over the last five years the relationship between Greece and Cyprus dramatically,” Mark Regev, chief spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, told New Europe in Jerusalem on November 19. “It all happened almost accidently. We were in Moscow for a meeting with [Vladimir] Putin,” Regev said, adding that Netanyahu met then Greek premier George Papandreou while they two were dining separately late one night at the Pushkin restaurant in Moscow in 2010. “It was the end of the day and they met at the restaurant and basically said, ‘We’re two democracies on the eastern edge of the Mediterranean, we should have a stronger relationship.’ And within weeks we had the visit of the Israeli Prime Minister in Greece and Mr Papandreou came here for his own visit. And since then the relationship has gotten stronger and also with Cyprus,” Regev said. Netanyahu’s chief spokesman admitted that relationship with Turkey has deteriorated. “I was with my prime minister when we went to Athens and I was with my prime minister when we went to Nicosia. We always said our relationship is not against anyone else,” Regev said. “We would like to have a better relationship with Turkey but it takes two people to tango,” he added. Regev said Israel is talking with Greece, Cyprus and other countries about possible ways to exploit its offshore gas reserves and export them to the markets. “Obviously it’s nice that we will become an energy exporter,” he said. “For us the big thing about the energy is that we built our economy on the assumption we had no natural resources,” he said. “For now it is an added value.” Energy ministers from Euro-Mediterranean countries met in Rome this week where Israel’s Energy Minister Silvan Shalom proposed that EU countries invest in a multi-billion euro pipeline (EastMed) to carry its natural gas to the continent, noting that the supply from Israel would reduce Europe’s current dependence on natural gas from Russia. The pipeline would carry gas from Israel’s Mediterranean cost to Cyprus, from where the gas would be carried on to Greece and Italy. Paul Hirschson, deputy spokesperson for Israel’s Foreign Ministry, told New Europe in Tel Aviv late on November 17 that potential private investors involved will make the decisions – not the government of Israel. Hirschson said “the issues that came up between Israel and Turkey” may have facilitated closer ties between Tel Aviv, Nicosia and Athens. “Israel is making a big effort to nurture improved relations with as many people as possible all over the world but particularly in our neighborhood. With the discovery of gas and hopefully oil in the region offshore it becomes even more important,” he said. “For economic reasons, political reasons but also for regional security regions, we believe that the relationships that we have seen nurtured in the last few years particularly between Israel and Greece and Cyprus, Albania, Bulgaria, are critical to regional security,” he said, highlighting the instability in the Middle East, North Africa as well as economic problems and issues in Europe. follow on @energyinsider See also: Egypt, Greece, Cyprus, Israel team up for Mediterranean gas Previously on Energy Insider: EU Energy Union Chief To Tackle South Stream Hungarian Dance: Playing Russia’s Energy Tune Worries US EU Subsidy Keeps Russian Gas Coming to Ukraine

Greek Foreign Minister’s Meeting with SYRIZA Leader Is ‘Imminent’
Greek coalition government Vice President and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos announced on Thursday that a meeting with main opposition SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras has been scheduled to take place in the near future. The meeting will be held in order to brief Tsipras on national issues, after Venizelos’ scheduled visit to Ankara, ahead of the Greco-Turkish High Level Cooperation Council, to be held in Athens, Greece, on December 5 and 6. The announcement of this meeting comes just a few hours after a long-standing conversation regarding a meeting between Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and the SYRIZA leader concluded in wreck. The canceled meeting’s purpose was to inform Tsipras on the country’s negotiations with the Troika, but SYRIZA voices ruled out Venizelos’ participation in the meeting. “We think that the presence of Mr. Venizelos would be unnecessary… If the government cannot communicate or express itself with a single voice, that is its own problem,” SYRIZA spokesman Panos Skourletis said earlier this week regarding the meeting that was finally never held. Yesterday, in an attempt to contain the temper and addressing the coordinating secretariat of the National Organizational Committee for the Democratic Progressive Bloc congress, Venizelos said that tension was caused on Wednesday due to a news report “that had nothing to do with reality, because there was no plan for a joint meeting between the Prime Minister, the government Vice President and the main opposition party leader.” Regarding the upcoming meeting with Tsipras, Venizelos underlined that “fortunately, I was informed that Mr. Tsipras accepts the invitation to come and be briefed on national issues after my trip to Ankara, ahead of the Greeco-Turkish High Level Cooperation Council in Athens.”

Controversial Artwork to be Removed from 5th Grade Textbook
The controversial artwork of a blender full of female naked bodies will be removed from a 5th grade textbook after media uproar and parent complaints. The illustration is found on page 19 of a physics textbook under the section of mixtures and compounds along with other pictures. It depicts a blender full of naked young females in the process of grinding the bodies into a bloody pulp. According to parents and officials, the textbook with the particular illustration has been used since the 2005-2006 school year. The Greece ‘s Ministry of Education has announced that the illustration in question will be removed from the digital version of the book and the textbook will be reprinted next year without it. Controversy has taken media by storm with parents and journalists wondering who decided to put the questionable picture with violent and sexual tones in an elementary school textbook and why no Ministry of Education official ever noticed it. The artwork belongs to 49-year old influential Japanese artist Aida Makoto. His multimedia works combine painting, video art, photography, sculpture and installations. He has also done illustrations for Manga comics. “Blender” is acrylic on canvas with dimensions 290X210.5 cm. It is on permanent exhibition at the Mizuma & One gallery in Tokyo and has also been exhibited at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo. Some of his works have caused controversy for being too gory, too sexual, or misogynistic.
