One of the World’s Largest Arch Bridges Built in Greece

According to Infrastructure and Transportation Minister Michalis Chrisochoidis’ announcement on Wednesday, August 27, the new arch bridge in Tsakona, at the borders of Messinia and Arcadia, will be ready within 2014. The Tsakona bridge will be the second largest in Greece, after the Rio-Antirrio bridge, and is considered as one the largest arch bridges worldwide. The bridge’s construction started in 2008 and its total cost amounts to 19 million euros. It comprises of two abutments and a pier. The 300 meter crossing is partially bridged (40m) with a prestressed segment and the rest (260m) is covered with two steel arches from where the bridge’s mixed deck is hanging. The arch bridge reaches 400 meters in length and connects an area where a large landslide took place in 2003. It is a structure of extraordinary complexity, both in terms of foundation, as well as superstructure, designed and implemented by Greek engineers and technicians.

An Ephemeral Hanging City in Piraeus

Using scaffolding, ropes and membranes, 170 architects, engineers and designers from 11 European countries have started constructing a hanging city in Piraeus port pier E2 for the first Greek HELLASTOCK which will run until September 4. HELLASTOCK is essentially the Greek version of BELLASTOCK, a French network of students and young architects which encourages cooperation in architectural projects, aiming to promote experimentation in the sector. The first BELLASTOCK took place in Paris, in 2006, and it was followed by similar events in Denmark, Spain, Mexico, Turkey, Germany, Chile, Canada and Algeria. The Greek event is an initiative by students of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA)‘s School of Architecture and is organized under the auspices of NTUA and the Hellenic Institute of Architecture. As part of the event, a three-day construction workshop will be held on September 2, 3 and 4 in pier E2 at the port of Piraeus, which will become the Cultural Coast of Piraeus port, as well as five days of lectures, briefings, workshops and seminars from August 27 until September 1 at the NTUA’s School of Architecture. This year’s theme is hanging constructions. The students will build an ephemeral city which will be able to house large population groups and expand internally while students will have to find an easy way of suspension. Admission to all events is free to the public. After the end of the exhibition, the space will be reverted to its previous form.
