Enter stage right: three of the best theatrical arrivals
When it comes to making a dramatic entrance, you can’t beat JB Priestley’s inspector, Alan Cummings’ cheeky Bacchae and a certain French elephant The unexpected ring at the doorbell is such a well-worked device that, as a theatre-going teenager seeing Waiting for Godot for the first time, I was quite astonished when Godot was a no show. I was so familiar with the notion of the surprise arrival who disrupts the status quo – in everything from Greek drama to Three Sisters to Pinter and Agatha Christie – that I expected characters unlisted in the programme to stroll on to the stage and destroy the hermetically sealed world that had been set up. I was often disappointed when they didn’t. Watching The Boys in the Band at the Park theatre, I was struck by the way that it uses both expected and unexpected arrivals in a way that disrupts and inverts. For a long time it looks as if the birthday boy himself, Harold, is going to shy off, Godot-like, from his own party. When he does arrive, it has a galvanising effect – at least it does in Mark Gatiss’s brilliant entrance – and brings the tension and the drama alive in a play that may now seem old-fashioned but is smartly revived in a production that is going out on a UK tour. Germany: Refugees Saved in Mediterranean Must Be Returned to North Africa
All illegal migrants who have been saved in the Mediterranean Sea must be returned to special centres for placement in North Africa where their applications for asylum in European countries can be reviewed, stated German Interior Minister _Thomas de_ Maizière before a meeting of the Council of Ministers of the EU in Luxembourg. “People who are being saved in the Mediterranean must be redirected to temporary shelters located in North Africa. Their need of protection will be checked and we will start a re-population in Europe via generous quotas distributed fairly among European countries,” added de Maizière. According to him, migrants who do not receive refugee status must be returned to their homelands. The statement of the German Interior Minister comes against the background of continuing debates among EU countries regarding the mandatory quotas for migrants coming from Greece and Italy. Several European countries raised objections to Brussels’ proposal for a mandatory number of refugees to be received on their territory. The Interior Minister did not pinpoint a particular country in North Africa but, for some time now, the EU has been trying to limit the migrant flow from Libya – the main departure point of people trying to reach Europe.

Times a-changin': Nobel jury says lyrics can be literature
STOCKHOLM (AP) — There's no question about Bob Dylan's genius as a songwriter or his profound impact on popular culture in America and beyond. Welsh, the author of "Trainspotting," said although he's a Dylan fan, he found the prize this year an "ill-conceived nostalgia award wrenched from the rancid prostates of senile, gibbering hippies." The Swedish Academy, however, said it wasn't opening the prize to a new genre, noting that poetry has often been put to music, including the works of ancient Greek writers like Homer and Sappho. People thought I was crazy or really out of line to suggest that Dylan should be awarded such a prize, said Ball, who teaches at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. "[...] he has changed the world for the better, I feel," Ball said. In his will, prize founder Alfred Nobel wrote that the literature award should go "to the person who shall have produced in the field of literature the most outstanding work in an ideal direction."
The Latest: Germans, Swiss step up migrant border patrols
Germany and Switzerland are stepping up patrols along their common border to stop migrants from traveling northward in breach of European Union asylum rules. History's first Latin American pope didn't cite specific cases, but the plight of unaccompanied children crossing into Mexico from Central America en route to the U.S. has been a concern of Catholic bishops and Catholic grassroots organizations for years. Macedonia has again extended the state of emergency declared at the height of Europe's migration crisis along its borders with Greece and Serbia until the end of June 2017. More than 200 people remain stranded in Macedonia since the Balkan transit route was closed this year after a series of countries sealed their borders to refugees and other migrants. French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve says Italy is not doing enough to screen arriving migrants and is failing to ensure that people who do not qualify for asylum are sent home. Aid groups have asked a court to delay government plans to close a wretched migrant camp in the French port of Calais, arguing that authorities aren't ready to relocate its thousands of residents. Thierry Kuhn of aid group Emmaus said Thursday that the groups filed an emergency request with a court in Lille seeking to delay the closure.

Bob Dylan wins the 2016 Nobel Prize for Literature
Source: www.cbc.ca - Thursday, October 13, 2016 Bob Dylan performs during the 17th Annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards in Los Angeles in 2012. (AP Photo/Chris Pizzello, File) Bob Dylan has won the 2016 Nobel Prize for Literature, "for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition." The 75-year-old singer-songwriter is one of the bestselling musical artists of all time, with more than 100 million records sold. He has published six collections of his lyrics and six books collecting his drawing and paintings. A memoir, Chronicles was published in 2005. It was the first volume of a planned three-volume series. The second and third instalment are yet to be published. His only work of fiction, , an experimental work that combined prose and poetry, was written in 1966. Dylan had been mentioned in the Nobel speculation for years, but few experts expected the academy to extend the award to a genre such as pop music. "Dylan has the status of an icon," the Nobel Prize website stated. "His influence on contemporary music is profound, and he is the object of a steady stream of secondary literature." Sara Danius, permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, compared Dylan to the epic Greek poets Homer and Sappho. "They wrote poetic texts that were meant to be listened to, they were to meant to be performed, often with instruments," she said. "But we still read Homer and Sappho and enjoy it... It's the same way with Bob Dylan." "He can be read and should be re All Related
