Queen's husband Prince Philip improving 'slightly'

Queen Elizabeth II's husband Prince Philip was making slight progress after being admitted to hospital more than two weeks ago, his daughter-in-law said on Wednesday. Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, said the 99-year-old Duke of Edinburgh, who was moved to a specialist unit for heart tests on Monday, was "slightly improving". While visiting a vaccination centre in London, she said he "hurts at moments", responding to a question from a volunteer there. "We keep our fingers crossed," she added. Philip's current stay in hospital is now his longest ever, raising fears for his health because of his advanced age. The prince was first admitted to the private King Edward VII Hospital in central London on February 16. Buckingham Palace said initially that he was expected to stay there for a "few days" after walking in unaided. Later, the palace said that he was being treated for an infection, without specifying further. But on Monday, he was taken to the state-run St Bartholomew's Hospital near St Paul's Cathedral for testing and observation of a "pre-existing heart condition". The hospital, known as Barts, dates back to the 12th century and has a renowned cardiac unit. Philip had a stent fitted in 2011 after suffering a blocked coronary artery, undergoing treatment at the specialist Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge. The palace said Monday that Philip was expected to stay in hospital at least until the end of this week. Philip turns 100 on June 10 and his already lengthy stay in hospital has raised concerns because of his age. Camilla's husband -- Philip's eldest son and heir to the throne, Prince Charles -- visited him in hospital last month. His youngest son Prince Edward and grandson Prince William have both commented on his state of health. Edward said his father -- a former naval officer -- was looking forward to being discharged. William said he was in good hands and being closely monitored. - Fresh controversy - Queen Elizabeth II, who is 94, has herself continued her royal duties despite her husband's illness. The couple have been married for more than 73 years. The Greek-born prince quickly moved up the ranks in the Royal Navy before giving up his career to support his wife when the early death of her father George VI in 1952 forced her to take the throne. He has been a constant presence at the side of the monarch, who has referred to him as her "strength and stay". He was one of the most active members of the royal family until retiring from public life in 2017. The couple have been in virtual self-isolation at their Windsor Castle home west of London since the start of the coronavirus pandemic last year because of their age. They have made only brief public appearances, and in January were given a first dose of coronavirus vaccine. The palace has said the duke's illness is not Covid-related. The monarch spoke to the Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak on Tuesday evening ahead of his budget speech on Wednesday, according to tradition. Philip's illness comes amid fresh controversy involving his grandson Prince Harry, who with his wife Meghan, left the royal frontline last year and now lives in California. The couple have given an interview to the US chat show host Oprah Winfrey, which is due to be aired on Sunday and expected to add to existing tensions. In released excerpts, Harry described the couple's "unbelievably tough" battles with British tabloids and said he feared "history repeating itself," in an apparent reference to his mother Princess Diana, who died in a car crash while evading paparazzi in 1997. In an awkward clash, the show is set to air same day that the Queen releases an annual message to mark Commonwealth Day. The BBC will air a special programme to mark this, while rival independent network ITV will show the Oprah interview. © 2021 AFP

Main remarks by the Foreign Ministry’s Secretary General for International Economic Relations and Openness, Ioannis Smyrlis, at the Informal EU Ministers of Foreign Affairs/Trade Council (2 March 2021)

In his statement regarding the only item on the agenda of the Informal EU Ministers of Foreign Affairs/Trade Council – the Commission's Communication on the Trade Policy Review – the Secretary General for International Economic Relations and Openness, Ioannis Smyrlis, stressed that the EU Trade and Investment policy should be able to meet the current challenges while also serving the EU’s long-term goals, including the green and digital transformation of the European and global economy.   Mr. Smyrlis stated that the European Union’s ultimate goal should be to promote a greener, fairer, more responsible and resilient global economy. In this context, he stressed that balancing our various ambitions is critical, clarifying that the primary goal of trade is to create growth and new jobs. The creation of a functional and competitive single market, along with the parallel development of synergies between various policies, is, for Mr. Smyrlis and the other participants in the Informal Meeting, the main challenge. According to Mr. Smyrlis, building bridges of cooperation between our trade partners must remain at the centre of our priorities. Regarding the modernisation of the World Trade Organization, in the context of the Revision of the EU Trade and Investment policy, the Secretary General for International Economic Relations and Openness supported the approach that has been adopted by the European Union, while also pointing out the need to find a common ground between the European partners, especially before the 12th Ministerial Conference. Mr. Smyrlis stressed the important role of the USA in the efforts to restore order in multilateral trade and promote sustainability, particularly in the disagreements that have arisen over the issues of aircraft and steel tariffs.  In closing, Mr. Smyrlis stressed that the EU can only benefit from enhancing its partnerships with neighbouring countries and the countries of Africa. In this direction, Greece is fully in accord with the emphasis placed on reaching and implementing trade agreements for the benefit of enterprises. Moreover, he argued that the EU should defend its interests against unfair practices, acting decisively to safeguard its rights when deemed necessary.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs announcement on the Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias’ intervention in the Parliamentary Conference of the MED7 group of countries (3 March 2021)

Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias participated today, online, in the Inter-Parliamentary Conference of the MED7 group of countries. In his intervention, the Minister underscored that this year’s meeting is of particular importance, given the developments in the Mediterranean region. In this context, he referred to a number of common challenges, including terrorism, organized crime and border security. The Minister of Foreign Affairs made special reference to the hybrid threats to the region, prominent among which is the instrumentalization of migration by Turkey against Greece and Cyprus. He stressed that a positive EU-Turkey agenda is only feasible if Turkey manifests, in a consistent manner, constructive engagement in the region, in compliance with International Law and EU standards. In this context, he noted that the sanctions should remain on the table, ready to be imposed as an instrument to permanently deter illegal and provocative behaviour. The Minister stressed that, in order to achieve security, stability and cooperation in the Mediterranean region, the Cyprus issue should be resolved as soon as possible. He made special reference to Greece’s cooperation mechanisms with other states in the Eastern Mediterranean, highlighting that these mechanisms are not directed against any other country and are open to all countries in the region that wish to participate, on condition of respect of the principles of International Law. Regarding Libya, he reiterated that it is Greece’s firm stance that all foreign forces must withdraw from the country. Moreover, referring to the developments in the Middle East, he underscored the need for the European Union to intensify its efforts to find a political solution in Syria, while also noting that the Abraham Accords create new conditions for the Middle East Peace Process. Finally, he noted that Greece wants to organize the 2021 MED7 Summit in Crete around two axes: Security and Sustainability in the Mediterranean region. Read the complete transcript of the Foreign Minister’s intervention here.
