Billionaire Steve Schwarzman just went off on the Dodd-Frank Act

At the Bernstein Thirty-Second Annual Strategic Decisions Conference 2016, the Blackstone Group chairman and CEO& discussed issues ranging from Brazil's economic growth to distressed energy companies in the US. Among his biggest concerns was the impact of regulations. Here's Schwarzman (emphasis ours): What's happening during that period is the junk bond market just went on sabbatical when illiquid. SO, FOR ALL OF YOU DODD-FRANK LOVERS, HERE'S WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU HAVE A COMMITMENT TO REGULATION AND REFORM, AND YOU DON'T QUITE UNDERSTAND ALL OF THE IMPLICATIONS. So, when they passed the Volcker rule, there were 25 firms making markets in junk bonds. Guess how many there are now. Five. That's 25 to 5. Triumph? You decide. Okay. So, what happens when things get difficult, that market now just locks up. That is not healthy for the capital markets. And this is happening all over. It's when you get almost all the market makers out of doing market making, right? So, it affects the treasury market. It affects all markets, and liquidity is coming down because we mandated that to make the world safer. THIS DOES NOT MAKE THE WORLD SAFER BY THE WAY. THIS IS NOT ENCOURAGING THE WORLD TO BE SAFE BECAUSE WHEN PEOPLE NEED TO SELL, AND THERE ISN'T LIQUIDITY, WHAT HAPPENS? THEY SELL SOMETHING ANYHOW, AND SO YOU DEVELOP THESE ODD OUTCOMES, RIGHT? In 2010, Congress passed the Dodd-Frank legislation intended to discourage risky behavior and avoid another financial crisis. Part of the law — the "Volcker rule" — restricts banks' abilities to speculate in markets and invest in private equity funds. Some blame the new regulations for killing market liquidity, as higher capital requirements limit Wall Street's ability to step in to buy securities as prices drop. We've seen some arguments about this phenomenon in the bond market. The regulation also required private equity firms with more than $150 million in assets, such as Blackstone, to register as investment advisors, which are subject to annual examinations. Last October, the firm paid a $39 million fine after the SEC found that Blackstone charged excessive "monitoring" fees, which are paid annually by the companies owned by the private equity firm. "We're so overregulated as a country that we just crushed our productivity," Schwarzman said. "That's temporary because it's reversible if anybody politically chooses to reverse it. If they wanna accelerate it, good luck." This isn't the first time Schwarzman has thrown a fist at government regulations. In an op-ed article for The Wall Street Journal published last June, Schwarzman argued that Dodd-Frank and other regulations like the Volcker Rule are setting us up for the next financial crisis. It made me think of the Greek gods and goddesses, their very human flaws and how difficult they made life for mere mortals. My brain started clicking. What if there were truly a greater being, but not in our form? And it created humans, but found we couldn’t govern ourselves. That One being might create some deities in our image so they could understand us, to take care of us. But, if they were human-like deities with great power, what creature would protect humans from the deities’ envy and greed and selfishness? My dog put his head on my lap, but he was too loyal, too kind. My cat lounged on my brand new sweater, depositing fur and claw holes and gazed upon me with contempt and ownership. German authorities arrested three men accused of planning an attack in Dusseldorf for IS
[ISIS]Ali Hashisho/Reuters BERLIN (AP) — German authorities on Thursday arrested three Syrian men suspected of planning an attack in Duesseldorf for the Islamic State group, prosecutors said. They said the plot was thwarted by a fourth suspect, who went to French authorities with details earlier this year. The three men were arrested in three different German states, federal prosecutors said in a statement. The plan called for two suicide attackers to blow themselves up in central Duesseldorf and then for further assailants to kill as many people as possible using firearms and explosives, prosecutors said. However, they said there were no indications that they had started with concrete preparations. The three men arrested in Germany were identified as Hamza C., 27; Mahood B., 25; and Abd Arahman A. K., 31. The suspect in custody in France was identified as Saleh A., 25, also from Syria. Their full names weren't released in keeping with German privacy rules. Prosecutors said that Saleh A. and Hamza C. joined IS in Syria in 2014 and got instructions from the group's leadership to carry out an attack in Duesseldorf. The two traveled to Turkey in May 2014 with IS approval, they added. In March and July 2015, they traveled separately via Greece to Germany. The pair convinced Mahood B. to join the plot at some point before January this year, prosecutors said. Also in January, Saleh A. contacted Abd Arahman A. K., who had traveled to Germany in October 2014 with instructions from IS to take part in the attack. According to prosecutors, Abd Arahman A. K. — who previously made suicide vests and grenades for the extremist Nusra Front group in Syria — was supposed to make the suicide vests. The plot was thwarted when Saleh A. went to prosecutors in Paris Feb. 1 with details of the plan. He has been in custody in France since. Prosecutors said that they will seek his extradition. Prosecutors stressed that the arrests are not related to soccer's European Championship, which kicks off in France next week. Germany so far has been spared mass-casualty attacks by Islamic extremists of the type seen in France and Belgium over recent months.
