Greece’s bail-out: Little respite
“IT IS the bad-news season,” says an adviser to Antonis Samaras’s struggling coalition government. He means the onset of winter, when cash-strapped Greeks start worrying about the price of heating fuel. A new property tax in next year’s budget, due to be presented to parliament on November 21st, is another headache. Farmers are being asked to pay tax on their landholdings for the first time. Squeezed by five years of austerity, one-third of property owners claim they will be unable to pay up, according to a survey by the Athens chamber of commerce.Mr Samaras’s centre-right New Democracy party and its junior partner, the PanHellenic Socialist Movement (Pasok), narrowly survived a no-confidence vote in the early hours of November 11th. The motion was proposed by Alexis Tsipras, boss of Syriza, a hard-left opposition party, in an attempt to bring a fractious far-left faction of his party on board after he pledged in a speech during a trip to America that, if elected, he would not take Greece out of the euro. The coalition scraped through after a defection by a Pasok lawmaker, the sixth since last year’s general election. The government can expect...

Debt Cut Last Chance For Greece
ATHENS - Further haircuts on Greek government debt should only be ?the last resort? in the country?s efforts at an economic turn-around, European Central Bank Executive Board member Yves Mersch said.
Speaking at a conference here in Athens, organized by the Levy Institute of Bard College, Mr. Mersch cautioned that ?Greece today stands at a crossroads.? Hard-earned reforms towards a sustainable economy is one way, ?easy answers? the other, he said.
Greece?s privately-held debt was restructured in May 2012 in the biggest debt restructuring in history. Most of its debt is now held by Eurozone governments and the International Monetary Fund, which have been keeping the country afloat since 2010 through bailouts worth a total of some 240 billion euros.
BIBLIA: "Three" is the Anti-300
Even with its many influences on Western civilization and American culture, there is precious little the average citizen knows about ancient Greece and its people. We learn a bare bones summation of its social and political structure (or at least we did when I went to school), hold it up as the great progenitor of Western civilization and move on by.
Learn the myths, learn some bullet point descriptions of each city state, boil it all down to a simple black and white picture of a people easily codified and move on to the next chapter.
In popular culture the bits and pieces we all learned about as children imbue so much that they have become not so much historical references as things invented solely for fantasy novels. In truth, and it shouldn?t be too surprising, this one dimensional interpretation couldn?t be the furthest thing from the truth and Kieron Gillen?s newest book takes one small step to rectify this.

Samaras Will Order Universities To Open
ATHENS - Striking staff at Greek universities, who've stayed off the job for 10 weeks to protest government plans to shed 1,300 jobs at the schools, will reportedly be ordered back to work.
Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, who this year issued civil mobilization orders to force striking Metro and port workers to return to work under threat of being arrested or fired ? and prevented a planned teachers strike ? will do the same for the striking staff at the Athens University and the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA).
Staff at the two institutions stopped work in protest at the so-called labor mobility scheme, though professors at the NTUA, who had been striking in solidarity with the workers, returned to work this week while those at Athens University had decided to come back next week.
But with the administrative staff saying they would stay out ? while being paid the whole time ? the schools could not have resumed normal operations.
