The International Conference “The Other Voice of the Desert: The palimpsest manuscripts of the Sinai Monastery, new technologies for reading, discovery of unknown texts, prospects for research” will take place from 27 to 29 November, at the Foreign Ministry’s “Giannos Kranidiotis” amphitheatre. The Holy Monastery of Sinai, in collaboration with the Early Manuscripts Electronic Library, and scientists of international standing – with the support of the Mount Sinai Foundation – implemented the five-year (2011-2016) programme for spectral imaging of the palimpsests. The programme’s aim is to achieve a better reading of these manuscripts, which often contain unknown texts from late antiquity and the early Byzantine world, as well as valuable data on the literature of the Greek and the other languages of the region. At the same time, they are valuable testimonials regarding the history of the Christian communities of the Middle East.Within the framework of the Conference, which is being held under the auspices of the President of the Hellenic Republic, Prokopis Pavlopoulos, all of the programme’s findings will be made public. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Amanatidis will give a welcome speech at the opening of the Conference, and he will hold a relevant press conference on 23 November, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1 Vas. Sofias Ave.).
