The European Commission proposed on Wednesday to extend by six months controls at several frontiers of countries which are members of the border-free Schengen area, saying that checks are justified by deficiencies in Greece's management of migrants. "There is still considerable migratory pressure at our external border, and large numbers of migrants present in Greece," the Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans said in a statement. "Therefore, as long as serious deficiencies in border management persist some internal border control measures should be maintained," he added.
