Traffickers’ Circuit Discovered in Santorini Police

The Santorini Police Department is currently under a scrutinizing investigation, after it was revealed that certain police officers and officials had been involved in a trafficking circuit, smuggling illegal migrants inside and outside of the country. In fact it was revealed that some of the migrants even had a criminal past. Most of the circuit’s trafficking operations took place via charter flights travelling from Santorini’s international airport to several European Union countries. In fact the “uniformed” circuit had branches in other Greek areas, namely Attica, where its members would give illegal migrants tickets to travel to Santorini by ferry. Once they arrived on the island they received forged travel documents and boarded planes heading to various European cities. The file against the Police Department’s officers and junior staff, as well as retired officers and private sector entrepreneurs based on the island, will be completed in 10 days. The Internal Affairs Directorate officials began the investigation about a year ago, while last winter, officers located on the island caught four police officers who were letting illegal migrants board a plane with false travel documents. It was reported that in several cases police officers on the island had been informed by airline employees about people who were trying to travel to European countries using forged documents. The police officers would perform rudimentary checks and then assure the employees that the documents were legal, letting the migrants board the flights. On several cases the check-in employees witnessed Syrians, Pakistanis and Indians who presented German, Italian and Spanish passports with information that in no way corresponded with them.
