Juncker: ‘Greeks Wait For Someone to Pull a Rabbit Out of the Hat’

Ahead of the crucial emergency summit of euro zone leaders on Monday and while bank withdrawals have accelerated significantly in Greece, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker expressed his exasperation with the Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras during his interview at the German news magazine Der Spiegel that will be featured on Saturday. EC chief made it clear that he has constantly warned Greece’s radical left Syriza government not to count on him to avert a breakdown of debt talks between Athens and its international creditors and he stated his opinion that Greeks believe that “there is someone in Europe who can pull a rabbit out of the hat at the end.” “I don’t understand Tsipras,” European Union’s top executive official told the German weekly magazine. And he continued by saying: “The trust I placed in him has not always been reciprocated in kind.” Jean-Claude Juncker underlined the necessity for the Greek Prime Minister to be honest with his people revealing to them that European Commission had proposed Greece an investment program worth 35 billion euros for the years 2015-20. “If I were Greek prime minister, I would claim that as a success,” former Luxembourg premier stated, adding that he had not heard anything like this from Alexis Tsipras.
