The win allowed the Thessaloniki team to open up a five-point gap over second-place Olympiakos after the defending champion was held to a 0-0 draw Saturday at Asteras. In the 42nd minute, Stelios Kitsiou won the ball at midfield and sent a 40-meter pass for Athanasiadis to slot home. A bad defensive clearance in the last minute of second-half injury time allowed Athanasiadis to thread the ball just inside the post for the second goal. Also, Panathinaikos beat Atromitos 2-0, Panetolikos overcame an early deficit to beat Xanthi 5-2, while Niki Volos drew 0-0 with Kerkyra and Panthrakikos was also held to a scoreless draw by OFI.
