When Judy Quinn moved from the UK to Corfu, Greece , she was not expecting to get involved with donkeys. One day she found a donkey who had been left to die, and since she had a garden, she decided to bring it home and take care of the wounded animal. Now, a few years later, Judy runs the Corfu Donkey Rescue (CDR) shelter, where she hosts 58 donkeys. As she noted, this is a major problem on the Greek island. Donkeys who are too old and wounded to be used by farmers are left to die alone. Due to the heavy objects that these animals are forced to carry, they usually suffer bone-related health problems. Quinn now lives next to the stables and takes care of her loving animals. As she said, they also show their love and appreciation for what she is doing. She enjoys taking care of them and often worries about what she is going to do if she is not able to do it at some point. Thankfully, many animal rights organizations have shown interest in supporting her cause. CDR has reached out to students and veterinarians. Any kind of help is welcome, said Quinn. In addition, people can adopt a donkey, and that is a way to help all the donkeys at the shelter and have a more personal contact with their selected animal. The shelter’s website offers the opportunity to select a donkey from photos or by visiting the shelter.
