Unlike the real world, where the differences between men and women are absolutely irreconcilable, the differences that divide the two sexes in the digital world are substantially less ingrained, according to a survey based on the databases of the United Nations and Eurostat. In 2003, 19% of men in Greece were using the internet, while the corresponding percentage for women stood at 13%. In 2013, 64% of Greek men were using the internet compared to 56% of Greek women. The survey revealed certain differences between the ways men and women use the internet. Men are more active in video games and music sectors. Women are more predominant on social networking sites. According to Kyriaki Giota, a PhD candidate in psychology at the University of Thessaly, women and men not only use the Internet in different ways; they also have different perceptions of the dangers of the Internet. Giota says that women use more social media, such as Facebook and Twitter. Men are more focused on online games, online shopping, the search for information and social support. Giota claims that, as in the real world, men are more vulnerable to dangers because they take more risks. The Kaspersky Lab’s survey of internet users across Europe showed that 17% of men have admitted they have suffered financial loss due to malware. The corresponding percentage for women is 14%. Moreover, 16% of men said that unwanted software was installed on their computer while downloading music, software and video. Just 11% of women reported the same problem. Meanwhile, 19% of men believe that online theft of money is a rare phenomenon, compared to 13% of women.
