Greece: thousands march to protest activist death.

Thousands of people took to the streets in Greece to protest the murder of Pavlos Fyssas, an anti-nazi activist murdered by a self-confessed supporter of neo Nazi party Golden Dawn.

Fyssas was murdered on Tuesday night. He was also a fairly well-known rapper going under the pseudo name Killap and singing. The demos were marred by violent clashes between protesters and the police in which tear gas was used.

His murderer, who was arrested shortly after he killed Fyssas with a single stab, confessed the murder and told the police he attended meeting at Golden Dawn offices between five and ten times a month.

However, Golden Dawn spokesman Ilias Kassidiaris said the party had nothing to do with the attack.

Local activists disagree. Petros Konstantinou, coordinator for the movement United Against Racism told New Europe: "This was a organised attack by Golden Dawn, they attacked 10 anti-fascist activists and one was murdered."

Golden Dawn entered the Greek parliament in May 2012 riding a wave of popular discontent with strict austerity policies. It is now polling third in opinion polls and is almost certain to enter the European Parliament in May's European elections. Its members and parliamentarians openly express their admiration for Hitler and his Nazi policies, claim there is no legal immigration to Greece and have been repeatedly accused of attacking immigrants.
