Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis holds meetings with European Commissioners on the Rule of Law (Brussels, 24.06.2021)

Greece’s unwavering commitment to the EU principles and respect for the Rule of Law was conveyed by Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis to Vera Jurova, Commission Vice-President for Values and Transparency, and Didier Reynders, Commissioner for Justice, who he met with today, June 24, in Brussels, on the sidelines of the EU Summit, held with the participation of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. More specifically, Mr. Varvitsiotis assured Ms. Jurova of Greece's commitment to European Principles and Values and its determination to defend them in the face of current challenges. "These values are not in the periphery, but at the heart of EU’s concerns. The Europe we believe in is one of tolerance, equality and respect for freedoms," the Alternate Minister noted. In this framework, Mr. Varvitsiotis and Ms. Jurova agreed on closer cooperation on matters within the Commissioner’s competence, but also in the context of the Conference on the Future of Europe. Afterwards, the Alternate Minister briefed Mr. Reynders on the situation of the Rule of Law in Greece and the important reforms that the country has undertaken in this field. In view of the preparation of the annual report on the Rule of Law situation in Greece, Mr. Varvitsiotis placed special emphasis on the issues of combating corruption, enhancing transparency, accelerating the administration of justice and the reception of migrants. He also assured the European Commissioner that Greece is determined to proceed with all the necessary reforms, which will further ensure the respect for the Rule of Law in our country.
