Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis meets with the President of the Hellenic Parliament, Constantine Tassoulas (Athens, 7 April 2021)

The Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs for European Affairs, Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, met today with the President of the Hellenic Parliament, Constantine Tassoulas, to discuss the national proposal for the Conference on the Future of Europe. During the meeting, which took place at the office of the President of the Parliament, they considered joint actions ahead of the opening of the Dialogue on the Future of Europe, this coming May, which coincides with the 40th anniversary of Greece's accession to the European Union. The President of the Parliament affirmed that the Hellenic Parliament will participate actively, with targeted actions, throughout the Dialogue on the Future of Europe, with the aim of making the dialogue as substantive and constructive as possible. The Alternate Minister emphasised the important role that national parliaments, and more specifically the Hellenic Parliament, are being called upon to play in the Europe-wide dialogue on the future of Europe. He also highlighted that Greece can creatively enrich the agenda with its vision for a stronger, more open and more ambitious Europe. The Greek proposal, as presented recently by Mr. Varvitsiotis to the Ministerial Council, includes 6+1 pillars, and specifically: The European Defence and Security framework; European Cohesion Policies; Environment and Climate Change; Migration; Research and Innovation; the strategy for deepening the EMU; and the Rule of Law-Democracy-Human Rights triptych. The meeting was also attended by Konstantinos Alexandris, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Special Envoy for the Conference on the Future of Europe.
