The lockdown in India, imposed on its population of 1.3bn people, is the largest of its kind anywhere in the world and has been the cause of enormous amounts of human suffering since it was first introduced at midnight on 24 March. India’s millions of migrant workers, and the 300 million people who fall below the poverty line and live a hand-to-mouth existence, have struggled without being able to work and travel and it has led to many finding themselves without food. 6.50am BST Human Rights Watch is today launching a campaign demanding that the Greek government free unaccompanied migrant children “from police cells and detention centres” because of the heightened risk of exposure to coronavirus.
