Scientists have identified five tastes that humans can identify: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami. Now they believe there is a sixth: calcium. The first four have been around for a long time, with the ancient Greek philosopher Democritus describing the last of them, bitter, 2.5 thousand years ago.
