Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras insisted in front of European leaders on the admission of refugees in accordance with the quota principle. In this way, tension on the Greek islands may be calmed. There are daily protests in the refugee camps on the islands. Tension in Greece is escalating due to the great number of people waiting to be admitted to other European countries. Until now, merely 5,200 refugees from Greece have been transferred to other European countries. About 60,000 have been waiting for months. Migrants and refugees protest every day and the main burden is on the islands in the Aegean. There are over 15,000 people in the camps there, who do not even wish to stay in Greece. Besides, there are no conditions to accommodate everyone. “A single country cannot deal with the migrant crisis by itself. This is a challenge to the European Union and we have to find a European solution. The future of Europe as a whole is under threat; this is not a problem for Greece alone,” stated Tsipras. In front of Greek media, the PM specified that the system for granting refugee status must be changed entirely, so that the burden is not transferred to countries at the external border of the EU.
