Greece calls for 20-fold increase in asylum officials as campaigners accuse Turkey of expelling refugees back to Syria Serious concerns have been raised about the viability and legality of the EU-Turkey refugee deal, just three days before its implementation, after rights campaigners alleged that Turkey has been deporting hundreds of refugees back to Syria on a daily basis in recent weeks, and the Greek asylum service said it needed more staff to make the deal work. In a double blow to the deal, the most senior Greek asylum official, Maria Stavropoulou, called for a 20-fold increase in personnel – just as Amnesty International alleged that unaccompanied children were among scores of Syrians illegally expelled from Turkey since January.
