Apple just announced that it has sold more than 13 million units of its new iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus in their first weekend on the market. This beats the record Apple set last year when it sold more than 10 million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus units during the phones' opening weekend. This year Apple made its new iPhones available in China at launch on Sept. 25, which likely played a role in shattering its first weekend sales record. Last year, Apple didn't bring the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus to China until October. "Sales for iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus have been phenomenal, blowing past any previous first weekend sales results in history," Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement. "Customers' feedback in incredible and they are loving 3D Touch and Live Photos, and we can't wait to bring iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus to customers in even more countries on October 9." Apple also announced that its new iPhones will be coming to 40 additional countries on Oct. 9, including Italy, Mexico, Russia, Spain, and Taiwan. The announcement comes after Apple said it was on pace to break its previous record of 10 million opening weekend sales in a statement to CNBC. Since the iPhone 6 performed so well last year, some analysts have expressed skepticism over the past several months as to whether or not Apple would be able to show that it's iPhone business is still growing. Here's what Andrew Uerkwitz at Oppenheimer wrote back in May: Over the next nine months, we expect investors to doubt if Apple can deliver the same growth with quarters of tough comps ahead. In fact, we believe some will argue that Apple will record its first year-over-year decline of iPhone sales in FY15. This could put pressure on the stock as investors may start to believe that the iPhone growth story has run its course. This announcement also comes after some analysts were concerned about whether or not 3D Touch would be compelling enough to sell tons of units like Apple did with the iPhone 6.
