It’s #FreeLucious until Lucious is free We pick up three months from where we left off. Lucious is in the bing for killing Bunkie, and Empire Records is throwing a #FreeLucious concert/rally in Central Park. A cage is lowered just above the stage with someone jostling around and beating their chest in a gorilla suit, and guess who it is: Cookie rips the mask off, grabs the mic and lets a fiery speech about the American prison industrial complex fly. Falling somewhere in between outrage and exhaustion, she wonders how long black people will be treated like imminent threats or wild animals that need to be caged up or put down. In a vacuum, it’s an incredibly aware moment for any primetime television series – Empire’ s writers understand their viewership and the issues that are important to them (bonus points for the digs at Al Sharpton and Don Lemon).
