The Foreign Ministry in Sofia has advised motorists visiting Greece to avoid taking hitchhikers in their vehicles in view of increased migrant influx into Bulgaria’s southern neighbor. Given the large number of illegal migrants moving along Greece’s roads, “we recommend to Bulgarian citizens travelling by car in Greece not to accept hitchhikers into their cars,” the Foreign Ministry said on its website. Such action is considered people trafficking – a serious criminal offence punishable by jail terms of at least two years for each illegal migrant under Greece’s Penal Code, the Foreign Ministry said.
