Whatever decision the Eurogroup takes, the Greek people will still have oxygen next week, they will survive, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said in phone contacts with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande on Saturday, according to government sources. The same sources said Tsipras underlined that “democracy is an ultimate value in Greece and the referendum will be held whatever the Eurogroup decides.” Eurozone Finance Ministers rejected requests by Greece on Saturday for a brief extension of a financing program that could allow the country to beat a June 30 deadline of a 1.6-billion-euro payment to the IMF. Earlier on Saturday, Tsipras, in a television address, called for a referendum on July 5 so that Greek citizens can decide whether to accept or reject the terms of the creditors’ proposal.
