His belief that Greece’s future lies within the European Union and the Eurozone expressed the newly elected President of the Hellenic Republic, Prokopis Pavlopoulos, earlier today, following a meeting with the head of the European Union’s delegation in Athens, Panos Karvounis. Pavlopoulos highlighted that the Greek people “will fight for this and we will fight together with our partners, but it is our common goal.” On his behalf, Karvounis said that he is happy to pass the Greek President’s statement to the European Commission. Earlier today, Pavlopoulos told the Department President of the EU General Court, Dimitris Gratsias, that the implementation of European legislation is desired and is the basis for the democratic evolution of the European family. In addition, he expressed his joy that a Greek judge has been appointed in such an important post, as “guarantor of the implementation of European law.” The Greek President’s comments come in a time when the relations between Athens and Brussels appear shaken. The ongoing negotiations between the Greek government and its international creditors have not produced a result for more than a month and just a few steps have been taken since the crucial February 20 Eurogroup, when the European partners agreed to grant Greece a four-month extension to its bailout program in return for economic reforms. Additionally, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’ ongoing visit to Russia has fueled rumors that Athens is turning to Moscow as an alternative source of fresh funds, even though such statements have been strongly denied by Greek government officials.
